The Dancing Satyr - bright, colorful, gestural, abstract, acrylic on canvas

Located in Bloomfield, ON

Fluid lines of colour appear to dance across the canvas in this colourful abstract painting –a collaboration between Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak and an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi. Inspired by an Italian sculpture of a mythological creature—the Satyr (a figure caught between human and animal worlds) found by a fisherman in 1998, this expressive piece is rendered in yellow, orange, green, pink, orange and white. “The philosophical artistic formation of one and the literary humanistic of the other, are intertwined in a common vocabulary, a visual language of colour, gesture and form.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

Portrait of a Gleaner - British Victorian art harvest portrait oil painting

By James John Hill

Located in Hagley, England

This absolutely lovely British Victorian oil painting is by noted Birmingham born artist James John Hill and has some excellent provenance below. The painting actually stayed in Birmingham for many years, hanging in Heathfield Hall, the former residence of inventor and engineer James Watt, but owned at that time by Thomas Pemberton. It then moved to Berwick House in Shropshire. Entitled The Gleaner and painted in1863, it is a charming half length portrait of a young woman with a sheaf of wheat under her arm. She is stood beneath trees and the wheat field is beyond. She is dressed in a lovely pink garment and wearing a brown felt hat, to shade her face from the sun, her dark hair cascading down her shoulder, The hat is decorated with a poppy. The soft tones and sympathetic rendering of the young woman make this a stunning 19th century oil painting with excellent provenance. The painting is housed in its original gilt frame with a beautiful oak leaf motif. Signed and dated 1863 lower left. Provenance. Thomas Pemberton, Heathfield Hall, Handsworth, Birmingham. (Heathfield Hall was the former residence of the inventor and engineer James Watt. Following his death the house had several occupiers including local luminaries Thomas Pemberton and George Tangye). His sale, Christie's, 30 April 1874, lot 95 (69gns to James Watson) Berwick House, Shropshire. (James Watson (1817-1895) was an English merchant, dairy herdsman and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892) Condition. Oil on canvas, 34 inches by 28 inches unframed, in good condition. Frame. Housed in its original gilt frame with oak leaf motif, 42 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. James John Hill RBA (1811 – 27 January 1882), known also by his alias J. J. Hill, was an English landscape and portrait painter, known for his many rustic paintings and portraits of Lady Burdett-Coutts. James John Hill was born sometime in 1811 in Broad Street, Birmingham to Daniel Hill, plater, and Elizabeth Rowlinson, the daughter of a brass founder. He was educated at Hazelwood School, a school founded by the educational reformer Rowland Hill...

Manor House with Cottages - British 18thC Old Master art oil painting VG prov.

By George Lambert

Located in Hagley, England

This stunning British Old Master landscape oil painting, with excellent provenance, is by George Lambert. Lambert was a pioneer of British landscape in art for its own sake. Painted in 1744, the painting is entitled View of a Manor House and Cottages in Elizabeth Einberg's 63rd volume of the Walpole Society 2001 and is described as follows: In the foreground a road emerges from a wood to cross a ford and then leads up the hill to the right, towards a manor house seemingly built into the remains of a medieval or Tudor edifice. The main track, crowded with sheep and rustic figures, passes the massive square gateposts lower down the hill on the left. Further to the left is a thatched cottage with smoke coming out the chimney. In the distance is a wide coastal view. The main buildings, which are in the dead centre of the composition, represent almost certainly an as yet unidentified English view. The colouring and detail in the trees and foliage are superb. This is an excellent Old Master oil painting by one of the all time great British landscape artists with extensive provenance. Signed and dated 1744 lower left on rock in black. Provenance. Elizabeth Einberg, “Catalogue Raisonnè of the works of George Lambert” The Annual Volume of the Walpole Society, 2001 Vol. 63, page 149 no P1744, fig.71. Antonacci Efrati Antichità Rome Gallery. Burden sale, Parke Bernet, New York, 20-21, April 1938 (376 repr.) Robert E. Peters, Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, March 1975 (41 repr.) Lit. Schnackenburg 1995, pp 83-84, cat. no.14 fig 13. Condition. Oil on canvas, 54 inches by 52 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 64 inches by 62 inches and in good condition. George Lambert (1700-1765) was an English landscape artist and theatre scene painter. With Richard Wilson he is recognised as a pioneer of British landscape in art, for its own sake. Lambert was born in Kent and studied art under Warner Hassells and John Wootton, soon attracting attention by the quality of his landscape painting. He painted many large and fine landscapes in the style of Gaspar Poussin and Salvator Rosa. Many of his landscapes were finely engraved by François Vivares, James Mason (1710–1785), and others, including a set of views of Plymouth and Mount Edgcumbe (painted conjointly with Samuel Scott), a view of Saltwood Castle in Kent, another of Dover, and a landscape presented to the Foundling Hospital in London. Lambert also obtained a great reputation as a scene-painter, working at first for the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre, in London, under John Rich. When Rich moved to Covent Garden Theatre, Lambert secured the assistance of Amigoni, and together they produced scenery of far higher quality than any previously executed. Lambert was a man of jovial temperament and shrewd wit, and frequently spent his evenings at work in his painting-loft at Covent Garden Theatre, to which men of note in the fashionable or theatrical world resorted to share his supper of a beef-steak, freshly cooked on the spot. Out of these meetings arose the well-known "Beefsteak Club" which long maintained a high social reputation. Most of Lambert's scene-paintings unfortunately perished when Covent Garden Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1808. Lambert was a friend of William Hogarth and a member of the jovial society that met at 'Old Slaughter's' Tavern in St Martin's Lane. In 1755 he was one of the committee of artists who proposed a royal academy of arts in London. He was a member of the Society of Artists of Great Britain, exhibited with them in 1761 and the three following years, and during the same period contributed to the Academy exhibitions. In 1765 he and other members seceded and formed the Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain, of which he was elected the first president. In conjunction with Samuel Scott, Lambert painted a series of Indian views for the old East India House in Leadenhall Street. He also etched two prints after Salvator Rosa. Lambert was associated in 1735 with George Vertue, Hogarth, and John Pine (engraver, 1660–1756) in obtaining a bill from parliament securing artists a copyright on their works. Lambert's portraits were painted by Thomas Hudson, John Vanderbank (engraved in mezzotint by John Faber the younger in 1727, and in line by H. Robinson and others), and Hogarth. Lambert's most famous painting is "A view of Box Hill, Surrey" (1733) which depicts a well-known beauty spot south of London. Hogarth considered Lambert a rival to the famous French landscape painter Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) with respect to his use of soft light to unify the scene in this painting. Though he never visited Italy he was inspired by the classical tradition of landscape painting. Lambert died on 30 November 1765 at his home on the Piazza in Covent Garden. His pupils included John Inigo Richards...

His father, Charles Roland Crockwell, was a mining engineer; his mother, Cora, was the daughter of an Iowa attorney. He became a commercial artist and experimental filmmaker who spent a good part of his career creating illustrations and advertisements for the Saturday Evening Post. In 1907 the Crockwell family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated from high school and then attended from Washington University. Initially he studied engineering, but soon switched to business. While still an undergraduate, Crockwell took courses at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and quickly realized that he wanted to be an artist. After graduating from Washington University in 1926, Crockwell continued to study at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts until 1929. The following year he relocated to Chicago and continued his studies at the American Academy of Art. In 1930 and 1931 he studied in Europe on a Traveling Fellowship. In 1932 Douglass Crockwell moved to Glens Falls, New York, which was to be his home for the remainder of his life. The following year he married Margaret Braman. They had three children, a son Douglass and two daughters, Johanna and Margaret. During the depression he created murals and posters for the Works Progress Administration including Post Office murals in White River junction, Vermont; Endicott, New York; and Macon, Mississippi. In 1934 he painted Paper Workers, Finch Pruyn & Co. (the leading Glens Falls, New York company) for the WPA. In the 1930s Crockwell developed an interest in experimental animated films that occupied him for the rest of his life. In 1936 and 1937, he collaborated with David Smith, a sculptor, to create surrealist films. Because of his interest in experimental films, his output of paintings was limited to just twenty to forty illustrations a year during this time. Crockwell painted his first of many Saturday Evening Post cover in 1933. He also worked for Life, Look, and Esquire, and numerous national advertisers including Friskies dog food, Welch’s Grape Juice, Republic Steel...

Double portrait of a brother and sister, c. 1830s
Double portrait of a brother and sister, c. 1830s

Double portrait of a brother and sister, c. 1830s

By Margaret Sarah Carpenter

Located in Henley-on-Thames, England

Margaret Sarah Carpenter (Salisbury 1793-1872 London) Double portrait of a brother and sister, formerly identified as the Poulett children, c. 1830s Half-length, within a park landscape Oil on canvas Inscribed to the stretcher frame verso, ‘Ms Carpenter’ 91.5 x 71.6 cm.; (within frame) 104.2 x 84 cm. (Unsigned) Provenance: Private collection, United Kingdom; Portobello Road, c. 2014; Where acquired by a private collector United Kingdom; By whom sold, Dreweatts, Old Master, British and European Art, 10 February 2026, lot 145; Where acquired by Haveron Fine Art. Painted by the most celebrated female artist of her generation, this charming double portrait of a brother and sister belongs to Margaret Sarah Carpenter’s highly productive output of the 1830s, and is characteristic of the accomplished duality of her child portraits. Both endearing and elegant, the siblings are pictured at the cusp of adolescence, and Carpenter navigates this moment of tender transformation with a subtlety no doubt informed by her own motherhood of five children. The young boy embraces his elder sister with a fraternal warmth, resting his hand on her wrist with a hint of Regency Romanticism. Their cheeks are flushed with the vitality and pictorial sweetness of youth; their lips are delicately coloured; and their eyes gleam with enlivening highlights. Meanwhile, they have graduated to the fashion of young adults: the boy has been ‘breeched’, and wears a double-breasted velvet jacket with a black cravat, while his sister’s fashion is altogether adult, albeit comprising softer materials, with delicate lace trim and pink ribbons. Moreover, their knowing gaze towards the viewer speaks to a primed sensibility, and their standing within a park landscape perhaps foresees the responsibilities of familial inheritance come adulthood. It was this intuitive and measured approach which earned Carpenter a reputation that vastly exceeded those typically afforded to public women of the 19th century. Indeed, she was for a time considered the natural successor to Thomas Lawrence, whom she is rumoured to have briefly studied under. A typewritten label affixed to the stretcher frame gives the traditional identification of the children as ‘John and Charlotte Poulett / children of / Lt. Gen. Hon. Vere Poulett’. Himself a son of Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett (1710-1788), the Hon. Vere Poulett (1761-1812) did have a number of children, including John (b. 1789) and Charlotte. However, their birthdates are not fitting with the painting’s date of creation or Carpenter’s own age, and thus leaves the children’s identities uncertain. Indeed, there is no record of any Poulett sitters in a transcript of Carpenter’s sitter book, held in the collection of the National Gallery, London (GB 1082 MSC); however, the record is by no means exhaustive, and does not include some 500 of Carpenter’s other works (particularly her child portraits). It is nonetheless apparent that the siblings’ fashion is belongs to the established classes, and the rural setting presumably suggests a landed family, possibly of noble descent. Margaret Sarah Carpenter (Salisbury 1793-1872 London) Carpenter was born in Salisbury to Alexander Geddes, a retired army officer, and Harriet Easton. Carpenter’s early talent was developed under the tuition of Thomas Guest (1754-1818) in Salisbury, where her skill was noticed by the 2nd Earl of Radnor, who allowed her to make copies of the Old Master pictures at Longford Castle. On Lord Radnor’s advice, Carpenter sent pictures for three successive years to the Royal Society of Arts, receiving a public acknowledgement for each as well as gold medals in 1813 and 1814. Aged 21, Carpenter moved to London in 1814 with Radnor’s funding, and established her early practise in his London residence. That same year, she first exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. Her works received high praise in the press, and some pictures were acquired by the Marquess of Strafford, an influential patron of the arts. Her works were heavily influenced by Lawrence and Reynolds, and it is possible that she studied for a year under Lawrence in 1812. Indeed, she later finished Lawrence’s portrait of Mrs Brandling. Carpenter married William Carpenter in 1817, who later became Keeper of Prints at the British Museum. Together, their five surviving children included artists William, Percy, and Jane Henrietta ‒ a model for some of her mother’s most tender portraits. Carpenter enjoyed a broad professional and social circle, being a close friend of Richard Parkes Bonington, and being reasonably well-acquainted with Constable ‒ who suspected that her incessant work was resulting in physical problems for her, as well as the neglect of her children (Gaze, p. 350). She introduced her sister Harriet to the artist William Collins RA...
