Little Blue (Abstract Geometric Mixed Media Encaustic Work on Wooden Panel)
Located in Hudson, NY
Little Blue, 2020 Encaustic & collage on thin edged board 12" X 12" This abstract geometric composition on wooden board features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Resume: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie,NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS Finalist, “Saatchi Showdown” 2010 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. Guna II (Abstract Painting)
Located in London, GB
Guna II (Abstract Painting) Encaustic on Okawara paper - Unframed The title, Guna (2016), is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘string, thread or strand’ and was inspired by Adams yoga practice. “It’s a key concept in various schools of Hindu philosophy which states there are 3 gunas: goodness, passion and darkness, all present in everyone and everything, but in different proportions. The interplay of the 3 gunas define the character of someone or something, of nature and determines the progress of life”. (Wikipedia) The pieces in this series are printed with pigmented encaustic on Japanese paper; they are mounted on panel and coated with medium or stand alone like this work on Okawara paper. These artworks were a reaction to the more serialized and geometric work Adams was doing, a need to break from that and work in a freeing and more physical way. Tracey Adams is an American abstract painter and printmaker. Her artworks reflect a strong interest in musical patterns, rhythms, lyrical compositional elements and what she calls a sense of performance. She lives and works in Carmel, California. Work by Adams is part of the permanent collections of several museums, including the Bakersfield Art Museum, the Monterey Museum of Art, the Fresno Art Museum, the Tucson Art...

Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background "Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022 Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum 24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. Bullfighting Scene Gouache on paper
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Bullfighting Scene Artist: Roberto Domingo Technique: Gouache on paper Dimensions: 7 x 10 in (14 x 17.3 in with frame) Period: 1930s Style: Spanish Impressionism with Post-Impressionist influence Condition: Framed in a classic wooden frame Theme: Bullfighting scene Description of the Artwork "Bullfighting Scene" by Roberto Domingo is a vibrant and dynamic depiction of a typical moment in a bullring. The composition captures the drama and intensity of the moment, with a mounted picador on a striking white horse as the centerpiece, flanked by a matador and assistants preparing for the spectacle. The artwork radiates energy through swift and loose brushstrokes, imbuing the scene with movement and vitality. Domingo’s style emphasizes visual synthesis, focusing on color and form rather than meticulous detail to convey the atmosphere of the bullfighting arena. Warm tones dominate, with vibrant yellows and reds contrasting against the grays and whites of the horse and costumes, creating a captivating chromatic interplay. The classic frame adds sobriety and balance to the piece, further highlighting the expressive power of the gouache. Biography of the Artist Roberto Domingo Fallola (1883-1956), born in Paris, was a renowned painter and illustrator of Spanish descent. The son of the celebrated bullfighting painter Vicente Domingo, he inherited a passion for bullfights and became one of the leading exponents of bullfighting art...

'De Rerum Natura' — Mid-century American Surrealism
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Lawrence Kupferman, 'De Rerum Natura', ink and encaustic, 1954. Signed 'Kupferman' in ink, lower right sheet edge. Signed and titled (twice) in ink, verso, and annotated '#ED:742.C' (the artist’s inventory number) 'March 1954' and 'Lucretius', in the artist’s hand. Ink and encaustic on heavy cream wove watercolor paper, with fresh colors, the image extending to the sheet edge. Slight toning to the sheet verso, otherwise in very good condition. Image size/sheet size 25 3/8 x 19 1/4 inches (645 x 489 mm). Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THIS WORK Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, dates back to ancient Greece. Traditionally colored pigments were added to heated beeswax, the oldest known pigment binder, to create the paint medium. The encaustic medium, similar in appearance to oil painting, can be applied to any number of surfaces from paper to stone. It allows for a great variety of texture and has the advantage of not yellowing, of weathering well, and of being unaffected by moisture. De Rerum Natura (usually translated as On the Nature of Things) is a philosophical epic poem written by the Roman poet Lucretius in Latin around 55 BCE. The poem was lost during the Middle Ages, rediscovered in 1417, and first printed in 1473. Its earliest published translation into any language (French) did not occur until 1650; in English — although earlier partial or unpublished translations exist — the first complete translation to be published was that of Thomas Creech, in heroic couplets, in 1682. A pioneering figure in the history of philosophical poetry, Lucretius has come to be our primary source of information on Epicurean physics, the official topic of his poem. Among numerous other Epicurean doctrines, the atomic ‘swerve’ is known to us mainly from Lucretius’ account of it. His defense of the Epicurean system is deftly and passionately argued and is particularly admired for its eloquent critique of the fear of death in book 3. Lucretius' work would have had a special resonance with Kupferman, who in his expressionist explorations was concerned with the mystery and essence of life itself. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lawrence Kupferman (1909 - 1982) was born in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and grew up in a working-class family. He attended the Boston Latin School and took part in the high school art program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In the late 1920s, he studied drawing under Philip Leslie Hale at the Museum School—an experience he called 'stultifying and repressive'. In 1932 he transferred to the Massachusetts College of Art, where he first met his wife, the artist Ruth Cobb...
