1968 Victor Koretsky Original poster - America's Shame - Black Power

1968 Victor Koretsky Original poster - America's Shame - Black Power

By Viktor Koretsky

Located in PARIS, FR

Victor Koretsky was born in 1909 in Kiev, and died in 1998 in Moscow. On this poster entitled America's Shame, a black man is represented in a pool of blood. It is a critique of the American civil rights situation. Among the photomontage poster artists of the 20th century, Viktor Borisovich Koretskii stands out as one of the most emblematic. His prolific career in the Soviet Union began in the 1930s and ended in the 1980s, and his unique artistic style has influenced generations of graphic designers. During World War II, Koretskii designed propaganda posters for the war effort. Later, he designed the first Soviet postage stamp dedicated to World War II. In 1946 and 1949, Viktor Koretskii received the Stalin Prize for his artistic work. In 1964, Viktor Koretskii was awarded the title of Honored Artistic Worker of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and in the same year he received a gold medal from the Soviet Peace...

1943 Original french propaganda poster from WWII - Working in Nazi Germany

Located in PARIS, FR

Since 1940, and throughout the war, many foreign volunteers chose to work in Germany, whether for ideological reasons or, more often, for wages or even the release of close prisoners. But from March 1942 onwards, the Nazi government launched a vast policy designed to bring about an influx of labor on its soil. Indeed, due to the ever-increasing need for men in the army, the mines, industry and agriculture lacked the manpower to support the war effort. As a prime target for this search, Vichy France...

1918 original promotional poster - Paris Symphony Orchestra - World War I - USA
1918 original promotional poster - Paris Symphony Orchestra - World War I - USA

1918 original promotional poster - Paris Symphony Orchestra - World War I - USA

Located in PARIS, FR

This 1918 original promotional poster celebrates the visit of the Paris Symphony Orchestra to the factory of the National Cash Register Company. Created during the final months of the World War I, the poster symbolically reflects the strong alliance between France and the United States. At the top of the composition, the American and French flags are elegantly draped together, forming a decorative banner that visually emphasizes the bond between the two nations. Below, the printed text announces that the flags have been raised in honor of the orchestra’s visit, transforming the event into a moment of celebration for workers and visitors alike. The poster explains that the orchestra consisted of eighty-six distinguished musicians, many of whom were professors at the Paris Conservatory of Music. The ensemble performed under the leadership of André Messager, one of the most respected figures in French musical life at the time. Industrial companies in the early twentieth century often organized cultural events for employees, combining factory pride with international goodwill. Hosting an orchestra of such prestige would have been a remarkable occasion, particularly in 1918 when cultural exchange between Allied nations carried strong symbolic meaning. The design of the poster is simple yet dignified. Rather than relying on elaborate imagery, it uses patriotic symbolism and formal typography to convey respect for both the musicians and the historic moment. The combination of national flags, ceremonial language, and elegant layout reflects the spirit of wartime solidarity and cultural diplomacy. Today, posters like this one are rare historical artifacts that illustrate how music, industry, and international relations intersected during the early twentieth century. As a document from the closing year of World War I, the 1918 Paris Symphony Orchestra poster...

F30 - Geometric Abstract Shaped Painting Apricot Orange Navy Blue Stripes, 2022

By Elizabeth Gourlay

Located in Kent, CT

In this contemporary painting in acrylic on linen mounted on a shaped panel, two vertical blocks of color in dark lapis blue and soft, mottled orange are luminous against thinner neutral sections of exposed linen. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line. Musical composition, emotional states and our collective subconscious resonate within bars, lines and blocks of color. The abstract forms emerge, layer and shift in precisely ordered, carefully composed rhythms. The artist contemplates the elements that make color in reduced forms come to life: size, flatness, relation to its edges, and how the presence of other colors affect how it is perceived. Gourlay draws inspiration from shapes found in everyday life and in her studio. The observed shapes either remain as they are or become simplified to their essential geometric elements. Subtleties in color, area, edge or orientation are the catalyst for emotive responses. Palette is minimized; the artist rarely uses a wide palette within one work. Rather, a broad range of colors are explored and then reduced. Gourlay investigates color properties: complementary or analogous color, value, saturation and color harmony vs. color anomaly. Elizabeth’s Gourlay’s work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. The artist was the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and Gorky’s Granddaughter, to name a few. Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Edinburgh...

In this contemporary geometric abstract painting in acrylic on linen mounted on a shaped panel, carefully ordered horizontal blocks of color in pale green, light teal blue and soft sage are luminous against thinner neutral sections of exposed beige linen. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line.
