1894 Eugène Grasset’s Art Nouveau poster - Sarah Bernhardt - Jeanne d'Arc
Located in PARIS, FR
Eugène Grasset’s medieval-inspired Art Nouveau poster, commissioned by Sarah Bernhardt to promote her 1894 role as Joan of Arc in Jules Barbier’s Jeanne d'Arc. Grasset portrays Bernhardt in the spirit of her historic role: standing bravely with a flowing flag embellished with fleur-de-lis amidst an onslaught of arrows and spears. This antique lithograph is the only color small-format edition of the original poster design, from an extremely rare folio published in conjunction with a landmark exhibition of poster design in St. Petersburg in 1897. This poster design for Jeanne d’Arc is especially important as being the collaboration that led Sarah Bernhardt to discover Alphonse Mucha, as she wanted a new artist...

Original 1943 World War II poster, designed by Sloan Roberts
Located in PARIS, FR
This original 1943 World War II poster, designed by Sloan Roberts, was part of the U.S. government’s War Bonds campaign, encouraging American citizens to financially support the war effort. During WWII, War Bonds were a crucial means of raising funds for military operations, and posters like this played a significant role in mobilizing patriotic sentiment across the nation. Roberts’ artwork for this poster is a striking example of wartime propaganda, using bold imagery and compelling text to inspire action. The composition typically features heroic figures—soldiers, civilians, or symbolic American icons—set against a powerful backdrop, reinforcing themes of duty, sacrifice, and national unity. The typography is strong and direct, emphasizing the message: "Buy War Bonds", a rallying cry repeated across numerous government-issued posters during the war. As a wartime artist, Sloan Roberts was known for his ability to evoke emotion and urgency through dynamic compositions and dramatic lighting. His work exemplifies the graphic design style of the era, which combined realistic illustration with bold, patriotic color schemes—often featuring reds, whites, and blues to reinforce national pride. These original 1943 posters were distributed widely across public spaces, factories, schools, and military recruitment centers, serving as a visual reminder of the home front’s responsibility in the war effort. Today, Sloan Roberts’ War Bonds poster is a highly collectible piece of WWII history, valued for its artistic, historical, and patriotic significance. This poster remains an iconic representation of American resilience and unity, making it a prized addition for collectors of vintage military propaganda, WWII memorabilia...

"Union Jack (Blue and Gold)" Pop British Flag 23k Gold Leaf/Oil Contemporary
Located in Wellesley, MA
Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized British flag. "Union Jack (Blue and Gold) " is at once lovely and bold. Part of a series of 'flag' paintings (American, British, French, Japanese, Scottish) these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to both pay homage in a straightforward way to these international cultural symbols, as well as to the broader tradition of pure geometric abstraction in painting. They can be perceived on both levels. The artist's simple distressed slightly distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. Also available are paintings of the 'Union Jack" in white and 23 karat gold leaf and bright, 'day-glo' like colors of blue, chartreuse and red, and red and gold. See also: "Sgt. Pepper Jack," "Union Jack Red and Gold," "Union Jack Navy and Gold," and "Union Jack White and Gold"), the Scottish flag...

Tjintjintjin
Located in Miami, FL
As one of the last generation to remember a childhood lived in the desert hunting and gathering with her family, Walangkura Napanangka's paintings recall the stories of country and the location of specific sites in her traditional homeland west of the salt lake of Karrkurutinjinya (Lake Macdonald). Born around 1946, at Tjitururrnga west of Kintore, in the remote and arid country between the Northern Territory and Western Australia, she lived with her father Rantji Tjapangati and mother Inyuwa Nampitjinpa and later, while still a teenager, travelled by foot with her family over the hundreds of kilometres from their remote desert home eventually joining Uta Uta Tjangala's group as they walked in to the settlements of Haasts Bluff and then Papunya. The lure of settlement life with its promise of plentiful food and water belied the harsh conversion they would make to an alien lifestyle with its many problems and unfamiliar demands. The upheaval however, was ameliorated to some degree by the proximity of her immediate family including her mother Inyuwa, adoptive father Tutuma Tjapangati, and sister Pirrmangka Napanangka (now deceased) all of whom became artists. Relocated to the community of Kintore in 1981 when the outstation movement began, Walangkura participated in the historic women's collaborative painting project (1994) that was initiated by the older women as a means of re-affirming their own spiritual and ancestral roots. It was a time of specifically female singing, ceremony and painting, away from the gaze of outsiders and men folk. The huge and colourful canvases that emerged from the women's camp were 'alive with the ritual excitement and narrative intensity of the occasion' (Johnson 2000: 197). Within a year, Papunya Tula Artists, now established at Kintore, had taken on many of these women as full-time artists, revitalising the company after the deaths of many of the original 'painting men'. While individual women forged their own stylistic trajectory, these paintings were immediately distinguishable from the men's more cerebral and symmetrical style. They radiated an exuberant and vibrant energy, the felt heart-beat of women's affinity to country and spirit. Walangkura's early works, created from 1996 onward, are characterized by masses of small markings and motifs covering large areas of canvas. Her favorite colour, a deep sandy orange predominates, accentuated against more somber blacks and reds and dusky greens or yellows. More recent works show a gestural quality though still tightly packed with an intensity of geometric line work representing sandhills. In a sense this provides a strong visual and contextual link to the men's linear style as exemplified by the works of George Tjungurrayi...

1951 original second edition movie poster "La Belle et la Bête" by Jean Cocteau
Located in PARIS, FR
The timeless tale of "La Belle et la Bête" has captivated audiences for centuries, with its origins dating back to Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's 1740 novel. In 1946, the visionary filmmaker Jean Cocteau brought this beloved story to life in his first feature film adaptation. His cinematic masterpiece enchanted viewers with its breathtaking sets, lavish costumes, and groundbreaking visual effects. The film, starring Jean Marais and Josette Day, has since become a cherished gem of French cinema, with its enduring legacy living on in both animation and live-action adaptations. In 2017, the tale was reimagined once again in a live-action format. However, in the realm of film poster art, the 1951 original second edition by Jean-Denis Malclès stands as a true work of art. Jean-Denis Malclès, an accomplished French artist, was known for his expertise in various artistic mediums. From opera set designs to book illustrations, his passion for painting shone through. His lifelong friend and renowned filmmaker, Jean Cocteau, commissioned Malclès to create a poster that would capture the essence of his fantasy romance film, "La Belle et la Bête." Malclès' foray into the world of film poster design was a departure from his usual artistic pursuits, but it resulted in a work of sheer magnificence. Malclès' poster for "La Belle et la Bête" is nothing short of magnificent. It exquisitely captures the magical and surreal imagery that defines the film. The central imagery depicts a stunning representation of Belle and the Beast, with the Beast in a regal pose as Belle gently embraces him. The use of color, shadow, and light in the poster evokes the enchanting atmosphere of the film. It is a true testament to Malclès' ability to convey complex emotions and themes with simplicity and elegance, much like the film itself. Jean-Denis Malclès' poster for "La Belle et la Bête" is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and definitive film posters of the 20th century. Its ability to capture the essence of Cocteau's cinematic masterpiece while retaining its artistic integrity is nothing short of remarkable. The poster has endured through the decades and remains a testament to the enduring power of art to evoke the magic of cinema. In conclusion, Jean-Denis Malclès' 1951 original second edition movie poster for "La Belle et la Bête" is a testament to the everlasting appeal of both the film and the story. Malclès' exceptional artistic talent was instrumental in creating a work of art that transcends the boundaries of mere film promotion...

This scene overlooking the Ventura River deeply spoke to me as a big fan of the geology and plant life of the Ojai Valley." — Ray Roberts
