Mixed Media Neo Expressionist Collage Assemblage Painting Sculpture Art Brut

By Loren Munk

Located in Surfside, FL

LOREN MUNK (american b. 1951) MUNKEY BUSINESS Signed and dated 'Munk 84' verso, mixed media construction with paint brushes, mirrored mosaic tile, gold leaf and oil paint 57 x 33 x 23 in. (144.8 x 83.8 x 58.4cm) Provenance: Malcolm Forbes collection The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Munk documents the New York art world in YouTube videos, using the name James Kalm. "Primary Urchin" Colorful, decorative patterns with dimensional paint on glass

By PJ Linden

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This piece titled "Primary Urchin" is an original artwork by PJ Linden and is made from dimensional paint on mosaic glass tile. This piece measures 5.5”h x 5”w. Based upon patterns and textures found in nature, primarily aquatic life, the natural rough, granulated surfaces of shark and stingray skins, urchin spines and fish scales, as well as the markings and colorations serving to repel predators, Linden creates second skins or aposematic pelts, employing them as unconventional canvases. Born 1985 Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. PJ Linden is a New York City and Pennsylvania-based fine artist known for her abstract, three-dimensional work. She paints with machine-like precision, creating microscopic patterns on found objects, fashion, and technology. Linden got her start working with Patricia Field, creating custom, one-of-a-kind art and fashion under the name Wonderpuss Octopus. At Field's iconic, namesake boutique, Linden's work caught the eye of celebrity clients including Beyonce, Willow Smith, Kelly Osborne, and Solange Knowles...

Marilyn vs JFK & JFK vs Marilyn

Marilyn vs JFK & JFK vs Marilyn

By Alex Guofeng Cao

Located in New York, NY

In a captivating new collection, Alex Guofeng Cao dazzles audiences with his unique twist on instantly recognizable images. Inspired by history and pop culture, Cao manipulates one iconic image to create another in his extraordinary large-scale works. From a distance, the pieces appear to be a singular image but as the viewer approaches closer, you find each work is a masterfully crafted compilation of minute detailed images layered next to one another, creating a mesmerizing and hypnotic optical illusion. Cao meticulously places each smaller image to form a dynamic gradient from dark to light which tricks the eye into seeing one image. This expertise in contrast is exemplified in all of his works, from striking black and white pieces to stunning explorations in high-definition color. He cleverly mirrors this visual contrast in his subject matter by subverting the main image and creating a dialogue between the macrocosm and microcosm. Take the piece, Ali vs Armstrong; here we see the iconic image of Muhammed Ali’s victory composed of thousands of tiny portraits...

By Louise Nevelson

Located in Toronto, Ontario

Caviar20 is excited to be offering this striking collage by the inimitable Louise Nevelson, who is regarded as one of the most original, influential, and successful American sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson's enduring appeal lies in her distinct visual language, which is apparent in all of her works, regardless of medium. While her iconic monochromatic wood assemblages are instantly recognizable, she continuously experimented with diverse materials, including resin, steel, and bronze, as well as numerous printmaking techniques. Collage was an important part of Nevelson's practice, defining her signature aesthetic. Much like her approach to printmaking, her collages possess a sculptural ethos that transcends the two-dimensional surface, imbuing the composition with a remarkable sense of volume, texture, and depth. One could argue that Nevelson's sculpture was informed by collage in that she took assorted existing forms combining them in order to create an entirely new and distinct arrangement. This untitled collage is an exceptional example of the artist's mastery of the medium. Featuring an assemblage of wood veneer, mirror, and metal, this work reflects Nevelson's meticulous sense of form and rhythm. Subtle details, such as the alternating direction of the wood veneer grain further heighten the visual complexity of the otherwise minimal composition. The inclusion of wood veneer marks a notable shift for Nevelson, who was previously loyal to a strict monochromatic palette of black or white. It wasn’t until the 1970s with her experimentation in collage that she expanded her palette. Nevelson also created jewellery and this collage acknowledges her activity in that realm. Created at the age of 83 during the final chapter of her career, this piece powerfully captures Nevelson's enduring spirit and dedication to artistic innovation. Today Nevelson's work can be found in every major public collection across North America and beyond. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Visit our Toronto gallery on Thursdays or by appointment.
