About the Item

City of Surprises 2 limited_edition Laser-cut gold mirror Edition number 20 Image size: H:50 cm x W:140 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:50 cm x W:140 cm x D:0.7cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look My newest edition of the City of Surprises piece - showing the London skyline, with a few 'additions'. Created from an original photograph taken from Greewnich Observatory it shows many of London'd famous landmarks in a line. Throughout the pandemic I thought a lot about connections with the world around us. Many of my family lived abroad so I was unable to see them for two years. And I was unable to travel, one of my great inspirations for my work. So I decided to create a work imagining my favourite city with a few of my favourite international landmarks, places I was unable to get to. You might also notice a slight change to a famous London building - which I am unable to use for legal reasons. The culprit has been replaced with a shark's head. Laser-cut into gold mirror. Please note: this piece is made to order. It can usually be created and delivered in around 3 weeks.

City of Surprises is created from an original photograph taken from Greenwich Park. It features one of my favourite views of the London skyline - boasting some of the city’s most famous landmarks in a single line with one small difference - for legal reasons. The London Eye, Shard, BT Tower, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Cheesegrater are all there, alongside one building that I’ve been asked not to feature in my work by its lawyers. Can you spot it? I love the shapes of the view’s outline so I have replaced the building that shall not be named with the head of shark. The ‘new’ London skyline is then laser-cut into gold mirror. City of Surprises is made to order. It can usually be created and delivered in around 3 weeks. Michael Wallner has artworks for sale online and in our gallery with Wychwood Art. Michael has spent more than twenty years in the media industry working on entertainment programmes, talk shows, documentaries, animations and a children’s novel. But creating original and innovative art is his true passion. His latest work celebrates the beauty of the city through the shapes, outlines and colours that define its character. London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Miami, Paris and Dubai all feature in Michael’s portfolio. The art is created by digitally manipulating and colouring his own photographs to produce unusual prints on aluminium, reclaimed wood, brass, even 1930’s copper-lite windows. He also creates neon, magnetic, and L.E.D installations. The metal pieces are printed on very thin sheets of brushed aluminium, giving the work an etched appearance. Michael works out of his studio at Wimbledon Art...

Michael Wallner, Little London: St Paul’s (aqua blue), framed brushed aluminium print, 25 x 18 x 3 cm approx, limited edition of 30. I love the beautiful lines, shapes and intricate patterns in the dome of London’s most famous cathedral. This piece of art is created from my original photograph, digitally manipulated to trace the dome’s outlines and coloured by hand on a graphics tablet. The image is then printed directly on a small piece of brushed aluminium, which gives the piece an etched appearance. The design of the dome itself appear as aluminium lines. The metal print is floated in hand-painted waxed wood frame. The piece is from my Little London collection: “Celebrate the Big Smoke...

"It came to me in the middle of the night - as these things often do - that to incorporate gold leaf into the finished print would neatly encapsulate some of the elements I am trying to express. Its application would obviously have to be done by hand with all its attendant imperfections and mistakes.
