Study for “L’Acropole”
Study for “L’Acropole”

Study for “L’Acropole”

By Paul Delvaux

Located in New Orleans, LA

Paul Delvaux 1897-1994 Belgian Study for “L’Acropole” Signed and dated "P.Delvaux 1965" (lower right) Watercolor, pen and ink on paper This preliminary drawing for Paul Delvaux’s greatest masterpiece L’Acropole, which resides today in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, features the artist’s most beloved subject — mystical scenes of nude women. A centrally-placed, stoic woman draped in a long green gown stands with her arms outstretched by her sides. She gazes at another idealized woman in the foreground, lying nude on a chaise lounge, while behind her, multitudes of other women in white dresses undertake a long procession towards a distant door. The captivating scene exudes the unique Surrealist style for which the artist has become known. With this skillful rendering of the surreal setting, Delvaux has mastered depicting nude women in a sensual yet non-erotic manner. The artist drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including the futuristic writings of Jules Verne and the mythos of Homer, and blended them with his subconscious themes, which frequently included the nude female form. In combination with the loose concepts of form and perspective found in the 16th-century Mannerist paintings that Delvaux studied in Italy before World War II, his distinctive style served to create memorable dreamscapes without veering into lewdness. Like the very best Surrealist images, the work is both innovative and engaging. Paul Delvaux's earliest and most lasting influences in his art were the futuristic writings of Jules Verne and the mythos of Homer. After completing his initial artistic training at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Delvaux exhibited with Surrealists Dalí...

Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall
Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall

Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall

Located in Harkstead, GB

A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...

By Isabel Rock

Located in Norfolk, GB

Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024. Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you and that that you decide to follow. With eight huge hops I vaulted a vast desert of sand dunes, hot sand blew in my eyes, blocked my nostrils and burnt my hooves. With nine large leaps I scaled a stone wall that stretched to the skies, the cold grey lumps seemed to penetrate my heart with their silent indifference. I had come to dance before the Queen who had heard rumours of my beauty. I knelt before her in the great long throne room. 'Your majesty,' I said, 'I will dance for you but you must know that this comes with a price. How great the price will be I cannot tell, it will depend on your deepest heart.' 'Dance,' she commanded, 'I care not for such things. There is no price, I am the Queen.' So I tapped my hooves and jiggled my legs, I tossed my mane and I shook my head. I danced and I danced. My body shimmered and shone, radiant in the light of the chandeliers. As I danced a rumble began, it got louder and louder as the walls of the castle crumbled and fell around me. I carried on dancing until nothing was left and the Queen was nowhere to be seen. I assumed she was crushed under the rocks, but I had given her fair warning...

To The Wonders

By Adeniyi Joshua Adetayo

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

Adetayo's "To The Wonders" is a symphony of colors that immediately draws the eye and engages the senses. The artist masterfully employs a kaleidoscope of hues, from deep, rich purples and reds to bright, vivacious yellows and greens. These colors blend harmoniously, creating a vibrant tapestry that envelops the viewer and sets a joyful and celebratory tone. At the center of the artwork, we find a woman elegantly seated, her posture exuding confidence and grace. Her face is illuminated, and her eyes are partly closed with a sense of merriment and anticipation. In her hand, she holds a wine glass, gracefully raised in a toast, as if inviting us to partake in a moment of celebration and reflection. The wine glass in the woman's hand is a focal point of the artwork. It glistens with the play of light and shadow, almost inviting the viewer to join in the toast. Wine, often associated with conviviality and communion, becomes a symbol of the simple joys and pleasures that life has to offer. Adetayo's meticulous attention to detail in rendering the glass reflects his commitment to capturing life's fleeting moments in all their brilliance. "To The Wonders" is more than just a representation of a woman raising a glass; it is an ode to the wonders of life itself. It encourages us to pause, savor the present, and find beauty in the everyday moments that often go unnoticed. Adetayo's work is a reminder that life is worth celebrating, whether it's a personal achievement, a gathering with loved ones, or the simple act of raising a glass to a new day. Adetayo's artwork also prompts us to consider the deeper layers of human existence. Beneath the surface celebration, there may be an underlying message about the importance of cherishing the beauty of diversity and the wonders that come from sharing our lives with others. The woman in "To The Wonders" appears to be inviting us not only to celebrate but also to embrace the interconnectedness of humanity. In "To The Wonders," Adeniyi Joshua Adetayo...
