LARRY RIVERS (hand signed and inscribed first edition book)
Located in New York, NY
Larry Rivers LARRY RIVERS (hand signed and inscribed first edition book), 1989 Hardback monograph with a dust jacket (hand signed and inscribed "Enjoy the Matisse" Signed, dated and inscribed by Larry Rivers in red marker on the title page 11 3/5 × 9 4/5 inches Lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket on the occasion of the artist's career retrospective. Text is by the distinguished art historian and Princeton professor Sam Hunter. Hand signed, dated and dedicated in red marker on the title page. Inscription reads: To Joanne and Ira Enjoy the Matisse Larry Rivers, April 2, 1992 About the book: Hunter, Sam. LARRY RIVERS. 358 pp. with 400 illustrations, including 155 plates in color. Folio, cloth. New York, Rizzoli, 1989. New York: Rizzoli, 1989. First edition. Hardcover. 358 pages. Retrospective monograph on Larry Rivers. Features text by Sam Hunter. Includes 400 illustrations of which 155 are in color. Publisher's Blurb: Rivers' public persona as an artist combines that of bohemian outsider, sensualist and entertainer. His best-known images of the 1960s--Dutch Masters cigars, French money, cigarette packs--became Pop icons. Eschewing abstraction, he came up with startling, disquieting figures, such as his obese, sagging mother-in-law depicted in the nude with brutal honesty ( Double Portrait of Berdie ). Yet there is more to Rivers than the hipster, as this lavishly illustrated monograph by a former Princeton art historian shows. Hunter makes a case for Rivers as a social realist: witness his powerful construction piece Ghetto Stoop or recent works that include searching portraits of Primo Levi...

He is probably best known for pen and ink drawings of mythology subjects geared towards children. Woman in Blue
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Andy Warhol is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. In the 1950s, he was an in-demand and celebrated illustrator working for New York's toniest publications (like Harper's Bazaar) and elegant shops (such as Bonwit Teller), in addition to many smaller independent fashion companies. In the mid-1950s Warhol became synonymous with shoes after creating a successful campaign for shoe retailer Miller & Sons. Although Warhol had a parallel art practice, primarily focused on drawing, surpassing the designation of “commercial artist” proved difficult. Consider that this era was the height of popularity for the Abstract Expressionist painters. Despite the prevailing aesthetic, Warhol continued to be dedicated to making elegant or playful line drawings. This untitled illustration is an intimate example of Warhol at his best in the 1950's. It is ambiguous whether this was created for a client, or whether Warhol was inspired by an encounter in real life. With the lightest touch, the artist renders a glamorous woman's profile as she holds a young child in her arms. Unique to this drawing is the subtle presence of the child, who rests gently against the woman's chest in a tender embrace yet is almost entirely abstract. This maternal exchange represents an unexpected deviation from Warhol's typical subject matter, possibly serving as a tribute to his own mother, Julia Warhola, whom he admired deeply. This elegant drawing is a marvellous precursor to Warhol's Pop Art era when he became transfixed by images and representation of women. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Louis Osman FRIBA Pavilion architectural design
Located in London, GB
Louis Osman was an English artist, architect, goldsmith, silversmith and medallist. He is notable for the gold coronet he designed and made for the investiture in 1969 of Charles, Prince of Wales. We have acquired a large archive of Osman's works form his daughter; to see the other Osman works available, please scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this Seller." Louis Osman (1914 - 1996) A Pavilion in a Private Park Pen, ink and wash 67 x 100 cm Provenance: the family of the artist. Signed lower right. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson – we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin...

"The Tower, Cannes" - Urban Landscape
By Shelley Lazarus
Located in Soquel, CA
Lively depiction of Cannes, France by California artist Shelley Lazarus (American, b. 1936). Artist's info on verso (redacted for privacy). Presented in a red wood frame with a double mat. Paper size: 10.5"H x 7"W Shelley Lazarus (American, b. 1936) is a Los Angeles based artist who studied at Syracuse University, Pratt College, and Parsons School of Design, and has been teaching art for over 20 years. Lazarus’ main goal as an artist is to bring a sense of movement and a sense of emotion to her paintings through the use of color. Her landscapes are done mostly on location, where she can feel the power of the atmosphere around her and through the use of color, composition and the movement of space, capture the subtle nuances that reflect in the light. Lazarus was born and educated in New York, where as a teenager she began her art studies at Pratt College while still attending Lincoln High School. She later was a student at Syracuse University and Parsons School of Design. In 1973 she relocated to the Los Angeles area with her husband and their three sons. Although her art career was interrupted for a time, in 1981 she became involved with the Brentwood Art Center. Since then, she has been actively pursuing her art career. Her works have been shown annually in both local and national shows. These works have received numerous awards including a Diptych and a Triptych that were in the International Art Competition for the Olympics in 1984, first place from the San Fernando Valley Art Club for a watercolor in the Santa Monica Mountain Celebration, and the recent Oklahoma National Watercolor investment award. She is a member of the Watercolor Honor Society and a signature member of the Oklahoma National Watercolor Society. Her paintings are in the collections of private, corporate, and public sectors in the US and abroad, including the library at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is an active participant in Women Painters West, Valley Watercolor Society, Gallery 825 and Valley Institute of Visual Arts (VIVA). Lazarus has taught art to both children and adults. At the present time she is teaching advance watercolor painting studies to adults at the Brentwood Art Center. She also teaches plein-air painting during the summer months and has given private lessons to those in the entertainment industry as well as to royalty. In 1993 she became involved in the formation of TAG Gallery, a co-op gallery located in the Miracle Mile...
