Marcel Gromaire
The Weight Lifter (L'Homme aux halteres)

1926

About the Item

The work is signed on the lower right by Gromaire. One of Gromaire's favorite subjects were men "of the people,” whether they worked in the fields or at sea, were construction workers or (as in the present drawing) weightlifters. This important drawing is a study for Gromaire's painting "L’Homme aux haltères" (The Weightlifter) (formerly in the Girardin collection, now in the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris), a painting that was shown in a major exhibition entitled "Marcel Gromaire" at the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, 1963 (no. 27), and was also reproduced in another important catalogue, "Marcel Gromaire", Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1980 (no. 82). In this same 1980 exhibition, there was a sketchier drawing of the same subject (no. 89). Most recently, the painting was exhibited in 2020 in a show on Gromaire at the Musée de la Piscine de Roubaix, which reinforces the importance of the present drawing.
