Jules-Eugène Lenepveu (1819-1898) Portrait of a man in profile, signed drawing

Located in Paris, FR

Jules-Eugène Lenepveu (1819-1898) Portrait of a man in profile signed on the lower right Pencil and heightenings of white gouache on paper 19.5 x 13 cm Framed : 29 x 22.7 cm Jules-Eugène Lenepveu is of course particularly well known for his large-scale paintings, such as the one on the ceiling of the Paris Opera, but his work here is much more delicate and intimate. We recognise the artist's mastery of talent, but the play of textures, with its highlights of white that enliven and illuminate the model's face, is also very subtle. There's a particularly charming sense of life and impression of light. Jules-Eugène Lenepveu was born in Angers on 12 December 1819, on the site of the street that now bears his name, into a family of small shopkeepers. The painter showed a deep attachment to his family throughout his life through his correspondence and the many portraits of his relatives. He entered the drawing school in Angers in 1833, where he was a pupil of Jean-Michel Mercier. There he rubbed shoulders with the sculptor Ferdinand Taluet. He arrived in Paris in 1837 and entered the Beaux-Arts, where he was officially admitted to François-Édouard Picot's studio in 1838. He exhibited his work "L'Idylle" at the Salon of 1843 and, that same year, left for his first visit to Italy. He was awarded the Second Prix de Rome in 1843 for "Cincinnatus recevant les députés du Sénat" (Cincinnatus receiving the deputies of the Senate), then the First Prize in 1847 for "La Mort de Vitellius" (The Death of Vitellius). A resident at the Villa Médicis from 1848, he was surrounded by painters Alexandre Cabanel, Léon Benouville, Gustave Boulanger, Félix Barrias...

Portrait of a Young Man, 20th Century Graphite on Paper

By James Stroudley

Located in London, GB

James Stroudley 1906 -1985 Portrait of a Young Man Graphite on paper Image size: 18 x 16 inches James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year. From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker...

Important Arts & Crafts Presentation Cabinet by Voysey, Alma-Tadema & RAs

Located in London, GB

Important Arts & Crafts Presentation Cabinet by Voysey, Alma-Tadema & RAs By St John’s Wood Arts Club (British, active from 1862) British, 1899–1900 Cabinet: Height 18cm, Width 27cm, Depth 38cm. Case: Height 22cm, Width 31cm, Depth 43cm Few objects embody a moment in history as completely as this one. Conceived by the Copyright Committee of the St John’s Wood Arts Club and presented in 1900 to the jurist Sir Thomas Edward Scrutton (1856–1934) in gratitude for his work drafting the Copyright (Artistic) Bill, this cabinet stands at the intersection of Arts & Crafts design, Royal Academy art and Victorian legal history. Designed by C.F.A. Voysey — one of the defining architects of the Arts & Crafts movement — and fitted with an elaborate silver and turquoise lock by the sculptor George Simonds, signed and dated 1900, the leather-bound wooden cabinet is itself a masterwork of applied art. Within its eight glazed white maple drawers lies a unique group of drawings, watercolours and a bronze relief, each contributed by a leading member of the Club. The interior lid bears an illuminated address inscribed ‘To T.E. Scrutton from the Copyright Committee of the St John’s Wood Arts Club’, signed by Alma-Tadema, Dicksee, Edwin Bale, Alfred East, Solomon J. Solomon, G.A. Storey, W. Reynolds-Stephens, George Simonds, John Cother Webb, C.F.A. Voysey and H. Annesley Voysey as Legal Advisor, together with the monogram of T.E. Scrutton. The cabinet contains the following works: i) Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, O.M., R.A. (1836–1912). Portrait of a lady, probably the artist’s wife, Laura Theresa, Lady Alma-Tadema. Signed ‘L Alma Tadema...

Man at Work - Drawing by Antoine Mayo - Late-20th century

Located in Roma, IT

Man at work is an original artwork realized by french artist Antoine Mayo ( Port-Said 1905 - Seine-Port 1990 ). China ink and pencil on paper, 1960-1970 s. Signed on the lower left. Passepartout cm 50x35 Good conditions. Mayo was born in Port Said, Egypt in 1905. His father was a Greek who worked on the Suez Canal as an engineer and his mother was French from the Bourgogne. He moved to France in 1914 and completed his studies in architecture in Paris in 1922. During the Twenties, Mayo frequented the Parisian avant-garde circles of Montparnasse and made the acquaintance, among many others, of Derain, Picasso, Pascin, Prévert, and Desnos. René Crevel introduced him to the Surrealists and for a short time he became friendly with André Breton, Max Ernst, Magritte, and Tanguy. During this period he was at odds with his family who disapproved of his intention to become an artist and he continued to paint independently of any group. The first exhibit of his work took place in 1929 at Galerie Quatre Chemins in tandem with De Chirico. The following year the same gallery hosted his first solo exhibit. In this same period, he became a member of “Grand Jeu” along with Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, Maurice Henry...
