Josef Albers Homage to the Square (from "Son oeuvre et sa contribution à la figuration visuelle au cours du XXe siècle") 1972 Silkscreen Print in brilliant colors on wove paper Image Size: 8.75 × 8.75 inches(22.23 × 22.23 cm) Sheet Size (approx.): 10.5 × 12 inches (26.67 × 30.48 cm) Framed Size: 13 × 13 × 0.5 inches (33.02 × 33.02 × 1.27 cm) Unsigned; as published Edition: ~1,500; not individually numbered Published by Dessain et Tolra – 1972 Printed with an additional image verso as issued Serigraphs by Herbert Geier, Ingolstadt, Germany & Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven, Connecticut, USA Gallery-issued COA available upon request The Homage to the Square series is Josef Albers’s most celebrated and influential body of work, produced between 1950 and his death in 1976. Consisting of hundreds of paintings, the series explores the interaction of color through a deceptively simple compositional structure: nested squares arranged concentrically on a flat surface. Despite its geometric restraint, the work is fundamentally about perception—how colors shift, advance, recede, and transform in relation to one another. Albers applied paint directly from the tube using a palette knife, avoiding visible brushwork to eliminate gesture and emphasize color relationships as the primary subject. Each composition is carefully calibrated, demonstrating how identical colors can appear dramatically different depending on their surrounding context. The result is a dynamic visual experience in which depth, vibration, and spatial illusion emerge purely through chromatic interaction. The series reflects Albers’s theoretical contributions, particularly his seminal book Interaction of Color (1963), in which he articulated his belief that color is relative rather than absolute. Rather than expressing emotion through imagery, Albers invites the viewer into an active perceptual process, making the act of seeing itself the central theme. Homage to the Square remains a cornerstone of modernist abstraction and color theory, influencing generations of artists, designers, and architects. Works from the series are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to be studied for their rigorous investigation of visual perception. Homage to the Square, Josef Albers square...

SHIPS THAT PASS IN THE NIGHT, (Barcos que Passan na Noite) 1999, color screenprint, signed in pencil, numbered 1/60, sheet 22 ½ x 27 ½”. From Jerusalem print workshop. Asaf Ben Zvi, Israeli contemporary artist, was born in Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, 1953. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and the Pratt Institute, New York. Laureate of numerous awards, notably the Rappaport Prize for an Established Artist for 2011, Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Lives and works in Jerusalem. He did his army service in a commando unit and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his discharge from the army he settled in Jerusalem and became interested in bird-watching. In 1981 he began to study architecture at Bezalel, but transferred to the art department. During the period of his studies, he worked primarily in sculpture, but after a period of study in New York, he began to paint as well. From the mid-1980s he made use of simple figures, so abstracted in their form that they became symbolic figures. Some of these figures were connected to biographical baggage, while others were based on trivial events. Many of his works are based on poetic texts that show his interest in esthetics and in the relationship between the painter and society. Education 1981-1985 Bezalel School of Art and Design, Jerusalem, BFA 1985 Pratt Institute, New York.City, USA Teaching 1933 Bezalel School of Art and Design, Jerusalem. Since 1989 Kalisher School, Tel Aviv. In 1981, he enrolled in the Art department at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. During his studies, he participated in a student exchange program at the Pratt Institute in New York. From the outset, Ben Zvi’s focus has been on nature and the environment. Ecological and human disasters and natural disasters initially played an main role in his work and received expression through various fields of color, with motifs such as a cross, a water flask, a wasp, butterfly or bird, symbolizing the fragile human existence steeped in an eternal struggle. In his later work, words penetrate the space of his paintings and art, reflecting on the private, public, local and universal realms. "Ben Zvi at his best is a visual poet, one who places words with great sensitivity to their tone and sometimes relinquishes the splendor of an image in favor of text and message." Bright Vibrant Pop Art Silkscreen NYC Abstract Expressionist

By William Scharf

Located in Surfside, FL

Red Angel, intensely and seductively colored: swooning purples and reds, ecstatic lemon yellows, and black construction paper. Jostling shapes, geometric and biomorphic, lyrical and hard-edged, refuse to resolve neatly Assemblage, a bold strategy to keep viewers unsettled and curious, the reward for which are profuse and luscious details: varied incidents of refinement, suggestive signs, most in a private code, not merely ornamental but integral to the overall message. William Scharf (born 1927, Media, PA) is an American artist from New York, he teaches at The Art Students League of New York. Painting with acrylics, he was a member of the New York School movement. Often categorized as a late generation Abstract Expressionist, Known for producing paintings with abstract compositions incorporating biomorphic and geometric forms in vivid colors, the artist was influenced by Surrealism, the Color Field painters, and symbolism. He apprenticed with Mark Rothko and was influenced by his color field paintings. The surrealist painter Arshile Gorky and the Abstract expressionism style found in 1950s New York City also influenced Scharf. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001), and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). In the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, being serious meant following the tenets of the New York School, which required abstract paintings to be spontaneous improvisations, the messier the better. At once hedonistic and disciplined, his brazen paintings are nothing if not promiscuous. The best ones mix the dynamism of gestural abstraction with sensual rhythms of decorative patterning, sometimes souping up the stew with cartoonish symbols and flourishes so ripe they belong in a dandy's fantasies. His exhibits include San Francisco Art Institute (1969), the Pepperdine University's Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art (2001) and Richard York Gallery in New York City (2004). Scharf's work has been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Anita Shapolsky Gallery, Meredith Ward Fine Art, and Hollis Taggart Galleries in New York City. Scharf has been an instructor of art at various institutions including The Art Students League, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Artists Equity Association.
