About the Item

Composition #8 lets its materials argue with each other. Above, oil stick and acrylic move with total fluidity, translucent washes of coral and turquoise pooling against a single wiry red gesture that snakes across the canvas like a loose thread. Below, that fluidity meets its opposite: a sculpted wood chain, its links solid and unbroken, anchors the composition in raw physical weight. The plexiglass seam where painting meets object doesn't hide the transition, it exposes it, making the viewer register the shift from illusion to matter. That collision is the point. Liggins spends the upper canvas dissolving form: shapes bleed into one another, lines loop without resolving, color behaves like weather. Then the wood chain arrives as pure literalness, something that can't be brushed away or painted over. Geometry gets treated as a point of departure in the gestural passages above, but here it hardens into an actual, load-bearing link. The driftwood backing extends that logic further, suggesting the work was assembled from things the sea or land had already shaped, rather than built from scratch. The chain also carries associations the paint alone doesn't: connection, constraint, sequence, history worn into a surface. Set against a composition otherwise devoted to openness and improvisation, it reads less as ornament than as counterweight, a reminder that even the most liberated abstraction is still, literally, held together by something fixed.
