Fabric-ation, signed monograph w/ hand made fabric covered boards 21/50 (unique)
Located in New York, NY
Yinka Shonibare Fabric-ation, 2013 Original Dutch wax print fabric chosen by the artist on Hardback cloth bound monograph with fabric covered board 12 1/2 × 11 × 1 1/2 inches Edition 21/50 (each entirely unique) Hand signed, dated and numbered 21/50 by Yinka Shonibare on the first front end page (see photo) Published by Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK This gorgeous hand signed, numbered and dated monograph with hand made fabric covered boards was published on the occasion of the Yinka Shonibare MBE: Fabric - ation Exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Kunstforeingen Gl Strand in 2013. 160 pages Hand signed, numbered and dated by artist in on the first front end page. Beyond the exhibition plates, the catalogue also includes an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist and texts by Dr Rebecca Schneider and Jean Fisher. The book measures 12.5" x 11", and is 160 pages. Shonibare produced this beautiful catalogue in an edition of only 50, and is sold out. Each work is totally unique, and has been cloth bound using a different original Dutch wax print fabric with embellishments that was chosen by the artist. It is also signed and numbered by Shonibare. Taking place in three of YSP’s indoor galleries and the open air, FABRIC–ATION featured over 30 vibrant works from the period 2002–2013 including sculpture, film, photography, painting and collage, with many works never before seen in the UK. This major exhibition was sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank. Born in London in 1962, Shonibare moved to Nigeria when he was three, later returning to the UK to study art. His work shrewdly explores and confounds stereotypes of race and class, engaging with ideas around identity and authenticity as well as dislocation, multiculturalism, global food production and revolution, often addressed through playful conceits. This approach is part of his determination to avoid being categorised: Shonibare accepted an MBE in 2004, adopting the title into his working name, saying, “it was the last thing you would have expected of me”. More about Yinka Shonibare: Yinka Shonibare CBE RA was born in London in 1962 and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He returned to the UK to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London and Goldsmiths College, London, where he received his Master’s in Fine Art. Over the past decades, Shonibare has become well known for his exploration of colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalization. Working in painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, Shonibare’s work examines race, class and the construction of cultural identity through a sharp political commentary of the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories. Shonibare uses wry citations of Western art history and literature to question the validity of contemporary cultural and national identities. In 2002, Shonibare was commissioned by Okwui Enwezor to create one of his most recognised installations, Gallantry and Criminal Conversation for Documenta XI. In 2004, he was nominated for the Turner Prize and was awarded the decoration of Member of the ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’, or MBE. In 2019 Shonibare was made Commander of the same order, amending his professional name to include CBE. In 2008, his mid-career survey commenced at Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and toured to the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. In 2010, his first public art commission Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle was displayed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. In 2013, Shonibare was elected as a Royal Academician and his most recent contributions have included: the RA Family Album, which was used to wrap Burlington Gardens building during construction and his two curated rooms which were part of the 2017 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, during which Wind Sculpture VI was also displayed in the RA courtyard. His recent major commission with the Public Art Fund, Wind Sculpture (SG) I, was installed at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park from March 7 through October 14, 2018. FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art presented The American Library at the Cleveland Public Library from July 14 until September 30, 2018. The British Library was recently acquired by the Tate London. In March 2021, Shonibare received Whitechapel Gallery’s prestigious Art Icon award, becoming the eighth artist to receive the honor. He was also selected to coordinate the Royal Academy of Arts 253rd Summer Exhibition in September 2021. Shonibare’s works are included in notable collections internationally, including the Tate Collection, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; Pérez Art Museum Miami in Florida and VandenBroek Foundation, The Netherlands. -Courtesy of James Cohan Gallery

Haitian Voodoo Beaded Flag with Danbala, Signed 'Moreau'
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present work is an excellent example of the flags and banners of Haitian Voodoo practice. It is constructed of cloth with hand-stitched glass beads and sequins, representing Danbala (also Damballa and Damballah, spelled on the flag "DAMBALAH"). Danbala depicts the spirit or loa of life. In Vodun practice, Danbala Wedo, along with his wife Ayida Wedo, are representative of birth and creation. They are in essence the divine mother and father of the universe. In the iconography, they are usually depicted together as two serpents, or sometimes as a serpent and a rainbow. The snake is symbolic of power, knowledge, and wisdom. Danbala is an especially popular deity and is often represented alone as St. Patrick or Moses, as both of these Christian figures performed miracles associated with snakes. This vévé shows the typical image of two snakes intertwined on a pole, accompanied by two flags. The imagery of Haitian Voodoo culture is derived from multiple sources, and the culture seems to have the ability to integrate the various sources from popular culture to catholic imagery into traditional African symbols, values and rituals. Flags like this one are meant to honor or invoke gods, as well as depict likenesses or attributes using dazzling displays of color. The relatively young age of this example shows the power and influence the imagery continues to have in Haiti to this day. 11 x 13.5 inches, artwork 19 x 21.5 inches, frame Framed to conservation standards in a shadow-box using 100 percent rag matting and museum glass within a gold gilt frame. Haitian Voodoo Beaded Flag with Gran Bwa signed "Claude"
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present work is an excellent example of the flags and banners of Haitian Vodun practice. It is constructed of cloth with hand-stitched glass beads and sequins, representing the figure Gran Bwa (also Grand Bois, spelled on the flag "GRAИD BOI"). According to Patrick Arthur Polk, Vodun flags are meant to honor or invoke gods, as well as to depict their likenesses and attributes with dazzling displays of color. In addition, the beadwork may reference the African religious elements of Vodun which came to Haiti with African slaves. Haiti is an important part of the African diaspora and there is no other Caribbean nation that has such rich survivals of African-style music and dancing, and of religious beliefs and practices that relate to ancient African tradition. According to Polk, Gran Bwa, "ruler of the forest, is the master of herbal remedies. He also presides over initiations which require, at least symbolically, the secrecy of the forest’s darkest recesses. He normally appears as a tall, symmetrical figure that is half man and half tree." The imagery of Haitian Voodoo culture is derived from multiple sources, and the culture seems to have the ability to integrate the various sources from popular culture to Catholic imagery into traditional African symbols, values and rituals. Images like that of Gran Bwa are based off ritual drawings, or vévé, used to invoke the deity and to consecrate ritual space. Such vévé in Voodoo, unlike images appropriated from Catholicism or from popular culture, are probably based off of ground drawings from Central and West Africa. The relatively young age of this example shows the power and influence the imagery continues to have in Haiti to this day. 16.5 x 19.25 inches, artwork 24.25 x 27 inches, frame Polk, Patrick Arthur. 'Snack Platter' Linen, wool, polyester, cotton fabric, velvet, contemporary, art
Located in Los Angeles, US
Meike Legler 'Snack Platter,' 2021 Linen, bleach, wool, polyester, buried bed sheet, vintage army tent, cotton fabric, velvet over stretched canvas 48 x 36 inches Meike Legler’s works are a bold post-feminist reframing of sewn objects, recontextualized far beyond “women’s work.” In 1918 Le Corbusier said, “There is a hierarchy in the arts: decorative art at the bottom and human form at the top. Because we are men”¹ Legler craftily subverts this notion by stitching together ideas and methodologies and powerfully placing herself within the spectrum of contemporary abstract painting. Originally trained as a clothing designer at Berlin’s Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft and Central St. Martins in London, Meike Legler uses fabrics and nimble sewing machine skills to create abstract paintings, stretched like canvas over wooden stretcher bars. When she moved to Los Angeles in 2016 her paintings became more complex, with wilder ideas and influences, and she started integrating materials like automotive tarps and faux fur into her elaborate constructions. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ - BIOGRAPHY - Meike Legler has exhibited at galleries and institutions in the Los Angeles area and internationally, including Art Movement LA, Los Angeles; Stella Ripley Contemporary, Québec, Canada; E.P. & L.P., West Hollywood; Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA; Nous Tous, Los Angeles; and Art House LA, Pacific Palisades. Her solo exhibitions include shows at The Voyager, Los Angeles; LADIES ROOM, Los Angeles; Soho House...
