Dogwood Blossoms. 1949. Dimensions: Tile 6 X 6 Frame 7.75 X 7.75 inches. Provenance: The tile was in the possession of the Beers family and is from the estate. Catalogue raisonné number at Galerie St Etienne: Kallir T #87 An exceedingly rare, authenticated, and hand painted floral decorated tile by Grandma Moses herself, fired by Helen Beers. There are only a handful of these known to exist, approximately five, this being one of those five, outside the private collection of Galerie St. Etienne, Manhattan NY. This listing is for the tile only. The photo archive, from the family, will be listed separately and is included here just for provenance and reference. Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860 – 1961), or Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist. She began painting in earnest at the age of 78 and is a prominent example of a newly successful art career at an advanced age. Moses gained popularity during the 1950s, having been featured on a cover of Time Magazine in 1953. She was a subject of numerous television programs and of a 1950 Oscar-nominated biographical documentary. Her autobiography, titled My Life's History, was published in 1952. She was also awarded two honorary doctoral degrees. She embroidered pictures with yarn, until disabled by arthritis. In her 1961 obituary, The New York Times said: "The simple realism, nostalgic atmosphere and luminous color with which Grandma Moses portrayed simple farm life and rural countryside won her a wide following. She was able to capture the excitement of winter's first snow, Thanksgiving preparations and the new, young green of oncoming spring ... In person, Grandma Moses charmed wherever she went. A tiny, lively woman with mischievous gray eyes and a quick wit, she could be sharp-tongued with a sycophant and stern with an errant grandchild." Moses's work has been a subject of numerous museum exhibitions worldwide and has been extensively merchandised, such as on greeting cards. In 2006, her 1943 painting titled Sugaring Off was sold at Christie's New York for US$1.36 million, setting an auction record for the artist. Her work is fundamental for any Naive art or Americana collection. She was known as either "Mother Moses" or "Grandma Moses", and although she first exhibited as "Mrs. Moses", the press dubbed her "Grandma Moses", and the nickname stuck. As a young wife and mother, Moses was creative in her home; for example, in 1918 she used house paint to decorate a fireboard. Beginning in 1932, Moses used yarn to embroider pictures for friends and family. She created quilt objects, a form of "hobby art". Lucy R. Lippard stated in "The Word in Their Hands" that she found "hobby art" to be "an activity so 'low' on the art lists that it still ranks way below 'folk art'". She found that hobby art often involves reuse of otherwise discarded objects. Moses painted scenes of rural life from earlier days, which she called "old-timey" New England landscapes. Moses said that she would "get an inspiration and start painting; then I'll forget everything, everything except how things used to be and how to paint it so people will know how we used to live." From her works of art, she omitted features of modern life, such as tractors and telephone poles. Her early style is less individual and more realistic or primitive, with a lack of knowledge of, or perhaps rejection of, basic perspective. Initially she created simple compositions or copied existing images. As her career advanced, she created complicated, panoramic compositions of rural life. During a visit to Hoosick Falls in 1938, Louis J. Caldor, an art collector who worked as an engineer in the state of New York, saw paintings made by Moses in the window of a drug store. He bought their supply and ten more from her Eagle Bridge house for $3 or $5 each. The next year, three Grandma Moses paintings...

Feu Central - Rare Book Illustrated by Yves Tanguy - 1947

Located in Roma, IT

Feu central is an original modern Artwork written by Benjamin Péret (Rezé, July 4, 1899 - Paris, September 18, 1959) and illustrated by Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy (January 5, 1900 – January 15, 1955) in 1947. Original Edition. Published by K éditeur, Paris. 1030 numbered copies. Format: in 4°. The dimensions and the weight are indicative. The book includes 101 pages with Four Full page illustrations. Mint conditions. Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy (January 5, 1900 – January 15, 1955), known as just Yves Tanguy, was a French surrealist painter. Tanguy's paintings have a unique, immediately recognizable style of nonrepresentational surrealism. They show vast, abstract landscapes, mostly in a tightly limited palette of colors, only occasionally showing flashes of contrasting color accents. Typically, these alien landscapes are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp as shards of glass, sometimes with an intriguingly organic look to them, like giant amoebae suddenly turned to stone. Benjamin Péret (Rezé, July 4, 1899 - Paris, September 18, 1959); he was a French poet. Alongside Breton he was among the most important and influential protagonists of the surrealist movement. He wrote poems characterized by a vehement anti-bourgeois aggression, by the rejection of the clichés of morality, by the parody of official rhetoric: Le Passager Du Transatlantique, Je Ne Mange Pas De Ce Pain-La, Feu Central. Faithful to the libertarian and internationalist ideal, communist militant, then Trotskyist, he enlisted in the international brigades...

He was a Flemish painter and graphic artist who worked mainly in France, known especially for his woodcuts focused on political and social issues, such as war and capitalism. He completed over 40 wordless novels in his career, and among these, his greatest is generally said to be Passionate Journey. Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and Otto Nückel. Masereel's woodcuts influenced Lynd Ward and later graphic artists such as George Walker, Clifford Harper, Eric Drooker, and New Yorker cartoonist Peter Arno. Masereel's woodcut series, mainly of sociocritical content and expressionistic in form, made Masereel internationally known. Among them were the wordless novels 25 Images of a Man's Passion (1918), Passionate Journey (1919), The Sun (1919), The Idea (1920), Story Without Words (1920), and Landscapes and Voices (1929). At that time Masereel also drew illustrations for famous works of world literature by Thomas Mann, Émile Zola, and Stefan Zweig.

Autograph Letter Signed by Filippo de Pisis - 1947

Located in Roma, IT

A Autograph Letter Signed by Filippo de Pisis accompanies a b/w photographic portrait (cm 11 x 9) of the young Italian artist, with his Basque-hat on his head, smoking a pipe and with his parrot on his shoulder. This composition, in perfect condition, is mounted under passepartout, plexiglass, and gilded frame (cm 40.5 x 2 x 54.5). The manuscript is addresses to Gaetano Chiurazzi. Venice, January 20th 1947. One page, single-sided. On letterhead paper “Ne nous embarbouillons pas dans les métaphores” (Balzac). cm 23 x 14.5. In 16°. In Italian. Signed “F. de Pisis”. Excellent condition, except for usual folds. Perfectly readable An affectionate greeting letter written with a rapid calligraphy by the artist had just returned to Italy, to Venice, after a short stay in Paris, with the first symptoms of a disease that will lead him to death. The artist writes to his friend, the Italian gallerist, Gaetano Chiurazzi (Naples,1899- Rome,1967), best-known as "Tanino". This letter will be delivered to Tanino by a great admirer and collector of de Pesis. A manuscript demonstrates how de Pisis spent his life: between Rome, Paris and Venice, living a very extravagant lifestyle; he had a pet parrot named Coco, and in Venice he was one of a handful of residents at the time who used a gondola. He had two personal gondoliers on 24-hour duty, who wore black-and-gold livery. Filippo de Pisis (born Luigi Filippo Tibertelli, Ferrara 1896 – Brugherio 1956) When he was 20 years old, the young painter from Ferrara had a meeting that changed his life. During his military service, he met the "Dioscuri", the brothers De Chirico and then Carrà. He was sure impressed by their way of seeing painting and, at the beginning, shared the metaphysical style. After a short stay in Rome and Paris, at the beginning of the 1920's, he started to rework his style, made of suggestions and original subjects, where the pictorial line is fragmented and, therefore, defined by Eugenio Montale as "fly-paw painting". The friendship with Julius Evola...
