Frédéric Choisel
A photographer, draftsman, cinematographer and painter, Frédéric Choisel is a person of many talents. Colors swirl across his canvases as if they’re in motion — his brushstrokes produce unexpected forms and textural heft. And while he’s best known for his abstract paintings, Choisel has created numerous works in a realist style, drawing frequently on the power of nature to produce serene landscapes as well as enveloping depictions of cloudy skies at dusk.
Born in France, Choisel attended Ecole Supérieure d'Etudes Cinématographiques and went on to the University of Paris VII, where he studied painting and other disciplines such as photography (he was shooting with an old Pentax as a child).
Influenced by the Dutch and Spanish Baroque artistic movements, Choisel credits 19th-century French masters Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot as inspirations. Photography and film are important to his painting, too. The artist initially worked as a filmmaker, and is still actively taking on projects as a cinematographer in the documentary realm. Choisel’s work behind the camera — any camera — is integral to his other endeavors. A still image he captures as part of a film project might find a new life as a subject at his easel.
Choisel has shown his work in solo and group exhibitions in France, Belgium and throughout the United States. He lives and works out of Paris, but also has a studio in Long Island City, New York, and is represented by Andra Norris Art Gallery in San Francisco.

- Listening to Scarlatti in Red - bold, geometric, abstract, collage on paperBy Francine SimoninLocated in Bloomfield, ONVertical composition on paper with a saturated wine red ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black and royal blue. Layered over these central marks is a structure of stacked, collaged geometric strips of paper painted with intersecting lines and shapes of marine blue, red and white. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options. Titled "listening to Scarlati" the piece may certainly be a response to the structured sonatas for harpsicord and pianoforte of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel. - Listening to Scarlatti - bold, layered, abstract shapes, collage on paperBy Francine SimoninLocated in Bloomfield, ONVertical composition on paper with a canary yellow acrylic ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black. Layered over these central marks is a central collaged strip of paper highlighted in ultra marine blue and grey topped by a tache of white paint. This is balanced by a horizontal strip in white and grey at the foot of the composition held down by another white swipe of white acrylic. A small horizontal collaged rectangle at the upper left keeps the eye moving upwards in the picture plane. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options. Titled "listening to Scarlatti", or en ecoutant Scarlatti in French, the piece may certainly be a response to the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel.
