Paris Café Terrace Scene Oil Painting European Post-Impressionist Figurative Art

By ANGEL BADIA CAMPS

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Paris Café Terrace Scene Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 38 × 46 cm (14.96 × 18.11 in) Framing: Unframed Signature: Hand-signed lower right Period: Second half of the 20th century Condition: Very good. Firm canvas, stable paint layer, visible impasto, no apparent restorations. Origin: Spain Original oil painting depicting a lively Parisian café terrace scene, rendered with a luminous and expressive brushstroke. The composition captures a moment of everyday urban life: seated figures, soft conversation, café signage and filtered daylight dissolving into architectural shadows. The artist prioritizes atmosphere over strict detail, allowing the scene to breathe through fluid impasto and subtle tonal transitions. The chromatic palette balances cool bluish greys and whites with warmer accents, creating depth and visual rhythm. The treatment of figures and light evokes European post-impressionist tradition, combining figurative clarity with painterly spontaneity. A refined decorative piece with strong interior presence, ideal for collectors of European figurative art, lovers of Parisian imagery, or elegant contemporary interiors seeking warmth and narrative. Àngel Badia i Camps (Puig-reig, Barcelona, 1929 – Barcelona, 2019) was a Catalan painter, illustrator and comic artist trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked extensively as an illustrator for European and British publishers, developing a strong command of the human figure and narrative composition. From the 1970s onward he focused primarily on fine art painting, producing figurative works centered on urban scenes, landscapes and everyday life. His work was exhibited in Spanish and international galleries, consolidating his position within the Catalan figurative tradition of the second half of the 20th century. Paris café painting...

Impressionistic Summer Landscape with Road Painted 1889

By Carl Johansson

Located in Stockholm, SE

Carl Johansson's "Summer Landscape with Road" is an exquisite landscape that encapsulates the serene beauty of the Swedish countryside. Painted in 1889, the same year Johansson showcased his work at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, one can't help but wonder if this very painting was among those displayed at the fair. "Summer Landscape with Road" offers a glimpse into the idyllic Swedish countryside through its masterful depiction. The scene is bathed in the distinctive light of the sun positioned at 30 degrees north-northwest, a unique aspect of Johansson's artworks. The viewer's eye is drawn along a winding dirt road that meanders through a tranquil pastoral landscape. Birch trees, with their white bark and tender green leaves, stand tall and sway gently, marking the passage toward a distant homestead nestled beside a calm lake. The rustic wooden fences and the clear sky, dotted with soft, billowing clouds, evoke a sense of peaceful solitude. Johansson's meticulous attention to detail and colour is evident in every brushstroke, from the lush greenery to the soft, earthy path leading to the horizon. The artist's signature use of light not only highlights the natural beauty of the North but also enhances the sense of depth and realism in the painting. Johansson's early works, such as this one, are exceedingly rare, making "Summer Landscape with Road" not only a visual delight but also a collector's gem. The painting's magnificent gold frame enhances the bright, vivid colours of the small-format artwork, creating an impactful presence. Carl Johansson's blue impressionistic depictions of Northern Sweden earned him the nickname "Ultramarine Johansson", and his paintings are celebrated in prestigious collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, and the municipality of Hudiksvall. oil on canvas signed and dated Carl Johansson . 89 . unframed 27 x 39 cm framed 41,5 x 53 cm Provenance: The previous owner bought it in 1988 at Åmells Stockholm...

"SOLITAIRE" TEXAS PRICKY PEAR CATCUS BLOOMS

"SOLITAIRE" TEXAS PRICKY PEAR CATCUS BLOOMS

By BARBARA MAULDIN

Located in San Antonio, TX

Barbara Mauldin Fredericksburg Artist Size: 16 x 12 Frame: 22 x 18 Medium: Oil "Solitaire" Barbara and her husband Chuck moved to Fredericksburg in 2005 after living many years in Louisiana, where she taught art at Baton Rouge Lutheran School. Soon after moving home to Texas, she began painting seriously. She has studied with Ian Roberts, Kevin Macpherson, Jill Carver, Lori Putnam, and (of course!) Chuck Mauldin. Barbara’s work has been accepted in several art events, such as the Women Artists of the West National Show, Contemporary Masters Invitational Art Show in Fredericksburg, the Mountain Oyster Club Art Show, the Plein Air Artists Colorado National Juried Art Exhibition, The Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX) “The Party” Art Exhibition and Sale, and others. Her paintings are characterized by color. “I like to emphasize the color that I see, as a creative and emotional response to the landscape.” She works with a limited palette, using a small number of pigments to mix colors, which results in beautiful color harmony. Barbara has focused her attention on the Texas landscape, especially on prickly pear cactus. Cactus is fun to paint. It has a multitude of interesting colors, which are an expression of the harshness of the environment and the amount of direct sun. In spring the colors are lighter and more mellow, and the flowers of late spring are a vibrant yellow and rose, sometimes orange. She enjoys plein air work, accepting the challenges of color, design, and the environment (critters and weather). Texas abounds with variety and inspiration; there is always another painting just around the corner! Her interest in art had always been a part of the fabric of her life. She works mainly in oil, and she also dabbles in pastels, watercolor, church banner...

English 19th century men bird shooting in a landscape, with dogs and horse

By John Nost Sartorius 1

Located in Woodbury, CT

John Nost Sartorius (British, 1759–1828) Men Out Bird Shooting in a Woodland Landscape, circa 1820 Oil on wooden panel, in a fine antique gilt frame Unsigned A finely observed early 19th-century sporting picture by John Nost Sartorius, one of the most respected figures in the English tradition of animal and sporting painting. The composition depicts a quiet moment in the field: a sportsman advancing through woodland with his gun, accompanied by attentive pointers, their forms crisply picked out against the darker recesses of the forest. Sartorius was celebrated for his ability to combine accurate animal portraiture with atmospheric landscape settings, and this work is characteristic of his mature period. The dogs are rendered with anatomical confidence and individual character, while the surrounding woodland is handled with a restrained, naturalistic palette that lends depth and calm to the scene. The narrative is understated and refined, intended as much for contemplation as for sporting reference. Painted on a wooden panel, as was common for Sartorius’s smaller and more intimate works, the picture retains a pleasing surface quality and detail. It is housed in an antique gilt frame of appropriate date, enhancing its presence and lending a strong period feel. Works by Sartorius were highly sought after by country house patrons in the early 19th century and were often commissioned to record favourite dogs or shooting grounds. Today, paintings of this type remain especially appealing to collectors of British sporting art and sit equally well in traditional country house interiors or more formal libraries and studies. A confident and decorative example of English sporting painting...

Celestial Fields Post Soviet Avant Garde Russian Israeli Art, Leviathan Group

Celestial Fields Post Soviet Avant Garde Russian Israeli Art, Leviathan Group

By Shmuel Ackerman

Located in Surfside, FL

Genre: Contemporary Subject: Abstract Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Hand signed and dated lower left Dimensions: 23 3/4" x 19 3/4" x 1/2" Dimensions w/Frame: 24" x 20 1/2" A bright and colorful abstract oil painting from Ackerman's Celestial Field series. While most pieces in this series are gouache, this electric blue painting is done in oil. Shmuel Ackerman (also spelled Shmuel Akkerman, Samuel Ackerman, Samuel Akkerman) Israeli Symbolist Painter and Co-Founder of the Leviathan Group Shmuel Ackerman (b. 1951, Soviet Union) is an Israeli painter known for his abstract symbolist works exploring the intersection of Jewish mysticism, folk art and folkloric motifs, and modern Western art. Born in Ukraine to a religious family, Ackerman trained at the Institute for Monumental Art in Ukraine from 1965 to 1970 before immigrating to Israel in 1973, settling in Jerusalem. Founding the Leviathan Group In 1976, Ackerman co-founded the Leviathan group in Jerusalem alongside Avraham Ofek and Mikhail Grobman, aiming to enrich Israeli art by drawing on Jewish sources, myth, and symbolism. The group combined conceptual and land art with Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah, seeking to forge a distinctly "national" style of Israeli art — publishing its ideas through a Russian-language periodical, also titled Leviathan, that Grobman edited. Within the group, Ofek pursued sculptural and performative work rooted in Kabbalistic symbolism, staging pieces like Ornament in the Landscape (1979) and projecting Hebrew letters onto the soil of the Judean Desert in works such as Letters of Light (1979), while Grobman's paintings and prints wove Hebrew and Russian text through images drawn from Jewish mystical tradition. Ackerman was an active member of the group until 1981, when both he and Ofek departed; Grobman continued the Leviathan project afterward with newer members including Lena Zaidel, who joined following her graduation from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in 1987, and staged further performances such as Khlebnikov 100 (1985) and Messiah (1987). Context: The Post-Soviet Jewish Avant-Garde Ackerman's formation belongs to a broader generation of Soviet-born Jewish artists whose emigration to Israel and the West reshaped both Israeli and international art in the 1970s and '80s. Grobman himself had been an active figure in the Second Russian Avant-Garde in 1960s Moscow, a milieu of unofficial, nonconformist artists resisting Soviet Socialist Realism that also produced émigré figures such as Ilya Kabakov, Erik Bulatov, Viktor Pivovarov, Vladimir Yankilevsky, Eduard Steinberg, Yuri Kuper, Grisha Bruskin, and the duo Komar and Melamid — many of whom, like Ackerman, carried the visual language of Soviet nonconformism into new engagements with Jewish identity and symbolism after leaving the USSR. Ofek's work from this same period was later exhibited in the landmark survey Chagall to Kitaj: The Jewish Experience in Twentieth Century Art at London's Barbican Art Gallery, situating the Leviathan group's project within this larger international conversation about modern Jewish art. Later Career in Paris In 1984, Ackerman relocated to Paris, France, where he continued to develop his abstract practice, producing large-scale mixed-media works on paper engaging with the legacy of twentieth-century modernism — his mature series paying explicit homage to Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Clyfford Still, and Robert Motherwell. Ackerman remains active in both Israel and France, continuing a practice that bridges Soviet-era training, Jerusalem's postwar avant-garde, and the broader trajectory of international abstraction. Keywords: Shmuel Ackerman, Shmuel Akkerman, Samuel Ackerman, Israeli painter, Soviet-Israeli artist, Leviathan group, Avraham Ofek, Mikhail Grobman, Second Russian Avant-Garde, Moscow Nonconformist art, post-Soviet Jewish avant-garde, Kabbalah art...
