Arie Azene, Israeli painter, born in Germany, 1934 Arie (Eisman) Azene was born in Hamburg, Germany. He immigrated to the Land of Israel with his parents soon after birth. In 1958, after studying art in Paris, he settled on Kibbutz Tzova in the Judean Hills, where he lived for 28 years. He spent 1968-1970 in France, England and Germany. In 1984, he moved to Jerusalem. Stylistically, Azene was influenced by the New Horizons group to which he was exposed during his studies at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Other influences were Joseph Zaritsky, Avigdor Stematsky and Yehezkel Streichman. Azene works in oil paint, pencil and aquarelle. His early work was abstract, but over the years, it has become more figurative and realistic. His colour palette is often based on two complementary hues, with a predominance of various combinations of gray. He won first prize in an art competition for children before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and the Royal Academy in London, he completed his studies and began artistic pursuits in earnest. Zamy established his place in the art world after displaying his work in one-man exhibitions and art fairs around the world. Zamy’s art displays chromatic and thematic richness and his choice of subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition and folklore. Additionally, his work presents general themes such as Paris cafes, still lives, flowers, circuses and landscapes. In the early stages of his work, he used rich pastels and light brush strokes. When he visited South America in the early 1980’s, his work reflected his new surroundings and were further enhanced by local brightness and colorfulness. I met the artist on many occasions in the late 1990s when I lived in New York and he was a very talented and pleasant chap. I asked him to paint different commissions for a client who wanted a certain color or subject and he was always able to amaze me with what he could produce. Created by Richard Britell (American, born 1944) circa 1990. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Richard Britell Archive of Works, signed by the artist and noting title. Born in New York, Richard Britell first studied at the Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher (1962-1964) before attending Syracuse University ( 1964-1966). He received his BFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1972. Britell was the recipient of the 1985 artist residency by Dartmouth College and has exhibited widely and with success, including in New York, Massachusetts and Italy.
