About the Item
Here for your consideration is a brilliant sunset over a bucolic county landscape painting. The artist is the very well known Dutch victorian artist, Joseph Thors. Signed verso by the artist on the mahogany wooden panel. Circa 1885. Condition is excellent. Original gilt over wood frame in fine original condition. Overall framed measurements are 10 by 12 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida estate
Joseph Thors (1842-1898) Dutch is a name recognised as one of the leading landscape artists of the Victorian period. A prolific painter in oils in the English rustic tradition, his scenes are of cottages, figures and animals, painted in a style derivative of the Norwich School. He lived in London but also worked in the Midlands where he made his name and where he is regarded as a member of the Birmingham School. It is known he travelled to France and he exhibited "View In Fontainebleau" No 389 at the Royal Academy in 1878. He is a well collected artist who has inspired the imagination of people who like to dwell for a moment on the rustic charm and hardship of our Victorian period.

Joseph Thors
Joseph Thors was born on August 25, 1835, in Amsterdam. He was a landscape painter who lived in London but also painted in the Midlands, where he is regarded as a member of the Birmingham School. His landscapes are mainly rustic cottages, figures and animals, painted in a style similar to that of the Norwich School. Naturalistic landscape painting was the fundamental aim of both the Norwich and Birmingham Schools. Thors was quite prodigious in his output. He was a draughtsman of peaceful little spots of nature, with their little hidden homesteads and winding paths, which he represents, in a refined and contemplative mood. Thors exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, British Institution and Suffolk Street between 1863–1900. At this period in his career, he was very influenced by the Nasmyth and Norfolk schools of painting, hence the darker tones in the landscape. Thors died in 1884, in Islington, London.
