A fine & large antique oil painting on canvas by Raimond Louis Lecourt (1882-1946), the cliffs at the Atlantic Ocean, Etretat, Normandy, France, circa 1910. Lecourt was the quintessential painter of scenes of Normandy France, this is a large and very fine example of his work. The painting depicts the Falaise d' Amont located near Etretat, Normandy, the Falaises (cliffs) are on the Atlantic coast and are a very impressive formation of flint cliffs with huge naturally created archways. The painting is beautifully rendered and in some areas the artist has employed impasto technique (thickly applied paint) to provide texture to the ocean & cliffs, in the foreground of the cliffs is a flock of herring gulls circling overhead. The painting is signed "Lecourt" lower right with a dedication, the painting is housed in the original sponge decorated gesso frame, also created by the artist. Condition is excellent, this charming painting is ready to hang on your wall. The artist was born in Le Havre, and studied at the National School of Fine Arts and the Regional School of Fine Arts of Rouen, he studied under Charles Lhuillier and Léon Bonnat. He received the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 Military medal during WW1. Lecourt studied at the Le Havre School of Fine Arts under the direction of Charles Lhuillier , then with Léon Bonnat at the Paris School of Fine Arts . He then lived in Fontaine-la-Mallet , where he painted in the Normandy region, which was his favorite subject. In 1899, Lecourt obtained the honorary prize for the upper course with the city's silver medal. A municipal scholarship which allowed him to enter the Paris School of Fine Arts in the studio of the painter Léon Bonnat . There he found his comrades from Le Havre who had preceded him there: Othon Friesz , Raoul Dufy , the brothers René and Henri de Saint-Delis . He debuted at the Salon of French Artists in 1901 with his painting Le Herseur . He completed his studies in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson and it was around this time that he got into the habit of spending his holidays in Fontaine-la-Mallet with his comrade Othon Friesz . He settled there permanently in 1907, after a trip to Brittany from where he brought back numerous sketches and portraits. During the First World War , he was mobilized on August 1, 1914 in the same regiment and behaved like a hero, decorated with the Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal . During an engagement at Courcy - Brimont , September 14, he was injured by a gunshot to the right forearm. He continued to draw with his left hand then, after a long rehabilitation, he regained the use of his right hand. He became a member of the Society of French Artists, also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, and made regular submissions to the Salons. Many paintings by him appear in museums & galleries in Denmark , Germany, the United States, Japan, and in England where the "Dogs of the Duchess of Manchester" painting was exhibited and won Lecourt great acclaim. After the outbreak of World War II, Lecourt takes the German Occupation of France very badly. After General Philippe Petains's handshake with Hitler in Montoire-sur-le-Loir, he returned his military medal to the Chancellery, accompanied by this comment: "We have no need for decorations in a country which no longer has the sense of honor" During this period, he resided with Charles Toussaint, a Le Havre broker and companion from the 74th infantry regiment, at the Frescinet manor, a property which would disappear under the bombings of the September 11, 1944. At this time, he painted mainly on wood, as canvases were rare and expensive at this time. In the winter of 1943-1944, he was hit by a military truck which skidded on the ice, during the fighting for the liberation of the port of Le Havre, the village of Fontaine-la-Mallet, where he lived, was raised to the ground under heavy bombing. His house, his studio, his notes and sketches were destroyed. However he went back to work with courage, but something had broken inside him. The following winter, he caught a cold and contracted pneumonia which took him away in eight days, unable to be properly treated following the refusal of an American army colonel, to give to civilians penicillin that only the Americans had at the time. His friends mourned him and others said that he was a gifted painter of Cauchoise (Normandy) painting, and who knew so well how to render plough horses, Normandy cows...

Long Beach, CA (April 9, 1926 – January 17, 2018) Ed Moses was a prominent figure in the Los Angeles art scene and key promoter of Post-War, West Coast art for almost 60 years. Best known for his eclectic range, his canvases are formal abstractions that use a variety of processes to experiment with surface—creating striations, cracks, marks and blurs at times juxtaposed with hard-edge geometric abstraction. As he described, “Painting is like discovery, trying this, trying that, bending this, twirling that, and then, every once in a while, it goes bing!” As a young man, Moses joined the military during World War II as a Navy Medical Corps surgical technician and discovered an aptitude for treating injuries. After his tour ended, he enrolled in Long Beach City College's pre-med program with the intent of becoming a doctor. After a painting course with Pedro Miller, Moses switched his major to art. He then went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he would receive both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While enrolled in his master’s program, fellow artist Craig Kauffman introduced Moses to Walter Hopps, future owner of the influential Ferus Gallery. Though he’d been exhibiting since 1949, Moses first showed at Ferus in 1958—while still enrolled at UCLA—and quickly became part of the “Cool School” with artists Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, John Altoon, and others. Following graduation, Moses moved to New York City where he became friends with Franz Kline, Milton Resnick, William de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, with whom he would exhibit in New York, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. In 1959, Moses married Avilda Peters and moved back to Los Angeles to start a family, travel, and continue his painting career. Always working with process and experimenting with materials as a painter, Moses was critically lauded for his bold composition and innovation. In 1968, he received a Tamarind Lithography Fellowship as well as the offer of a teaching position at the University of California, Los Angeles, his alma mater, where he would teach until 1972. After travels in Europe, he would return to UCLA to teach until 1976, the same year he was recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and his first museum shows: a show of drawings from 1958-1970s at the Wight Gallery at UCLA, and a show of new abstract and cubist red paintings at LACMA curated by Stephanie Barron, the latter marking a transitional moment in his career. ACA Galleries, New York Exhibited New York, Frank Rehn Gallery, Changing Old New York, 1931. New York, ACA Galleries, Ernest Fiene: Art of the City, 1925-1955, May 2-23, 1981, n.p., no. 5. BIO Ernest Fiene was born in Elberfeld, Germany in 1894. As a teenager, Fiene immigrated to the United States in 1912. He studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York City from 1914 to 1918, taking day classes with Thomas Maynard and evening classes with Leon Kroll. Fiene continued his studies at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York from 1916 to 1918, adding classes in printmaking at the Art Students League in 1923. Fiene began his career as an artist in 1919 with his first exhibition of watercolors at the MacDowell Club arranged by his mentor Robert Henri. In 1923 the Whitney Studio Club mounted a large exhibition of his works. The following year he had an exhibition at the New Gallery in New York, which completely sold out all fifty-two works, including paintings, watercolors, drawings, and etchings. With the proceeds of sales from the New Gallery exhibition, Ernest Fiene and his younger brother Paul, a sculptor, built studios in Woodstock, New York in 1925. In the early Twenties Ernest Fiene painted mostly landscapes of Woodstock and both the Ramapo and Hudson River Valleys. The first monograph from the Younger Artists Series was published on Fiene in 1922. Published in Woodstock, the series went on to include Alexander Brook, Peggy Bacon, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. The book reproduced 1 illustration in color and another 27 reproductions in black and white. Around 1925 Fiene became fascinated with the intensity, excitement, and opportunities for color harmonies New York City offered as a subject. His paintings shifted to urban and industrial themes with architecture, industry, and transportation becoming his subjects. By 1926 Fiene had attracted the dealer Frank K.M. Rehn, who gave him a one-man exhibition that year, which travelled to the Boston Arts Club. C.W. Kraushaar Galleries gave Fiene a one-man exhibition of urban, landscape, portrait, and still life paintings in 1927. Julianna Force, the director of the Whitney Studio Club and first director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, included two of Fiene’s paintings in a fall exhibition in 1928. The Whitney Studio Club showed Fiene’s paintings in a two-man exhibition with Glenn O. Coleman that year and acquired three of Fiene’s paintings. Also in 1928 Fiene became affiliated with Edith Halpert’s Downtown Gallery where he had an exhibition of 20 lithographs in the spring. Fiene sold his house in Woodstock in 1928 to spend more of his time in New York City. With so many successful exhibitions, Fiene returned to Paris in 1928-29 where he rented Jules Pascin's studio and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In France, Fiene painted both landscape and urban subjects developed from ideas influenced by Cubist geometry and the use of flat areas of broad color. Upon returning to New York in 1930, Fiene used this new approach to continue to paint New York skyscraper and waterfront subjects, as well as to begin a series of paintings on changing old New York based on the excavations for Radio City Music Hall and the construction of the Empire State Building. Frank K.M. Rehn Galleries exhibited this series, titled “Changing Old New York,” in 1931. Fiene also has solo exhibitions at Rehn Galleries in 1930 and 1932. Fiene’s oil paintings are exhibited at the Chicago Arts Club in 1930 as well. Fiene was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans in December of 1931. Visiting New York, Henri Matisse saw the exhibition and called Fiene’s Razing Buildings, West 49th Street the finest painting he had seen in New York. Fiene had two mural studies from his Mechanical Progress series exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Murals by American Painters and Photographers in 1932. Fiene sent View from my Window which depicts Fiene working on a lithograph stone while looking out his window to the newly completed Empire State Building to the Carnegie International in 1931. In 1932 Fiene participated in the first Biennial of American Painting at the Whitney Museum and his prints were included in exhibitions at the Downtown Gallery and the Wehye Gallery. In the same year, Fiene was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship to further study mural painting in Florence, Italy. On his return from Italy in 1933 Fiene re-engaged himself in New York City life and won several public and private mural projects. Fiene resumed his active exhibition schedule, participating in two group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum and a one-man exhibition of recent paintings at the Downtown Gallery in January 1934. In 1933 he purchased a farm in Southbury, Connecticut, which added Connecticut scenes to his landscape subjects. This was also the year Fiene began to spend summers on Monhegan Island, Maine, where he painted seascapes, harbor scenes, and still lifes. Fiene’s landscape paintings attracted numerous commissions as part of the American Scene movement. Through the fall and winter of 1935-36, Fiene took an extended sketching trip through the urban, industrial, and farming areas of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya - Wings 2021 - 60 x 30 inches (unframed size) Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas , 2021 One of the most popular series of the Master Artist, The Golden Flute is the artists more romantic renedition of Art. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media. Krishna is a cosmic musician, and the tune he creates by playing his transcendental flute is embodied with cosmic energy. When Krishna is depicted as being between the age of 5 and 8, it is always with his flute. Therefore, during this period, he is aptly called Murlidhara (murali means “flute,” and dhara means “hold”), signifying the one who holds the flute. He is never without it, whether he is with his mother, on the grazing grounds with his herd of cows, among his cowherd companions or roaming around on the Jamuna banks. Gopis lose their selves in this tune. For them, music becomes the voice of love, which is too passionate and secretive. Style : The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive. He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media. About the Artist and his work : Born : In Calcutta, 1947. Education : Graduated from Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Calcutta) in 1969. Exhibitions : Shuvaprasanna has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Tao Art Gallery and at the Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'ABODE' sold at Waddington's 'Fine Prints & Photography Auction' in 2014. There have been many articles about Shuvaprasanna, including 'An exclusive edifice' written by Kunal Ray for The Hindu in 2014.
