Lyrical Abstraction Acrylic Painting Ronnie Landfield Color Field Abstract
Located in Surfside, FL
Ronnie Landfield (1947- American) "Untitled" 1982 Acrylic on Paper Dimensions: Sheet 30" X 42" Frame 32 X 44 Hand signed and dated lower right Provenance: Denman Associates, Seattle gallery Ronnie Landfield (American, 1947-) is an abstract painter. During his early career from the mid-1960s through the 1970s his paintings were associated with Lyrical Abstraction (related to Postminimalism, Color Field painting, and Abstract expressionism), and he was represented by the David Whitney Gallery and the André Emmerich Gallery. Landfield is best known for his abstract landscape paintings, and has held more than seventy solo exhibitions and more than two hundred group exhibitions. Born and raised in Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, Landfield first exhibited his paintings in Manhattan in 1962. He continued his study of painting by visiting major museum and gallery exhibitions in New York during the early sixties and by taking painting and drawing classes at the Art Students League of New York and in Woodstock, New York. He graduated from the High School of Art and Design in June 1963. He briefly attending the Kansas City Art Institute before returning to New York in November 1963. At sixteen Landfield rented his first loft at 6 Bleecker Street near The Bowery (sublet with a friend from the figurative painter Leland Bell), during a period when his abstract expressionist oil paintings took on hard-edged and large painterly shapes. In February 1964, Landfield traveled to Los Angeles; and in March he began living in Berkeley where he began painting Hard-edge abstractions primarily painted with acrylic. He briefly attended the University of California, Berkeley and the San Francisco Art Institute before returning to New York in July 1965. From 1964 to 1966 he experimented with minimal art, sculpture, hard-edge geometric painting, found objects, and finally began a series of 15 - 9' x 6' mystical "border paintings". After a serious setback in February 1966 when his loft at 496 Broadway burned down, he returned to painting in April 1966 by sharing a loft with his friend Dan Christensen at 4 Great Jones Street. The Border Painting series was completed in July 1966, and soon after architect Philip Johnson acquired Tan Painting for the permanent collection of The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska. In late 1966 through 1968 he began exhibiting his paintings and works on paper in leading galleries and museums. Landfield moved into his loft at 94 Bowery in July 1967; there, he continued to experiment with rollers, staining, hard-edge borders, and painted unstretched canvases on the floor for the first time. Briefly in 1967-1968 he worked part-time for Dick Higgins and the Something Else Press. Landfield was part of a large circle of young artists who had come to Manhattan during the 1960s. Specifically Nowhere, Yellow (Abstract Geometric Painting with Grids on Yellow)
Located in Hudson, NY
Large abstract geometric painting with intricate line work in pencil and gouache on a bright yellow background "Specifically, Nowhere (Yellow)" made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 gouache, acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil on paper, mounted on panel 48 x 48 inches unframed, 50 x 50 inches with a dark brown stained wood floater frame Surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This large abstract geometric painting was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish. More about the work: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Artist CV: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS NYFA Fellowship in Painting 2018 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. Damien Hirst Spin Painting (Damien Hirst shark spin painting)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Damien Hirst Spin Painting 2009: A mesmerizing Damien Hirst Spin painting with explosions of vivid color amidst the timeless, mysterious form of a shark. This Damien Hirst Spin painting originates from Hirst’s ‘Spin Workshop’ - a public event hosted by the artist to celebrate the opening of his heralded 2009 exhibition: ‘Requiem’ at the PinchukArtCentre, Ukraine. Acrylic on paper. 2009. 19.25 x 26.5 inches. Excellent overall condition. Unique; one of. Features a stamped (printed) signature on the reverse and inscription: © Damien Hirst. A beautifully rendered Damien Hirst painting defined by strong colors, classic Hirst motifs & a unique overall presence. Artist Bio: Damien Hirst is a British Conceptual artist known for his controversial take on beauty and found-art objects. Along with Liam Gillick, Tracey Emin, and Sarah Lucas, Hirst was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. “I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds,” he reflected. “Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Hirst was raised in Leeds. As a student at Goldsmiths College in London, his work caught the eye of the collector and gallerist Charles Saatchi, who became an early patron. Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)—a large vitrine containing an Australian tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde—was financed by Saatchi and helped to launch the artist’s career. Hirst went on to win the coveted Turner Prize in 1995. In 2012, he showed what went on to be one of his most controversial work in decades, the installation In and Out of Love, which consisted of two white windowless rooms in which over 9,000 butterflies flitted around and died. In 2015 Hirst opened the Newport Street Gallery in London, which grew from his long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. His works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami. No. 2: Abstract Expressionist Oil on Canvas Paper in Blue, Teal & Light Pink
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract expressionist style painting on canvas paper in teal, dark blue, and pink with accents of green 'Untitled 2 (Blue & Pink)' by Jenny Nelson Oil on canvas paper, Painted in 2016 14.5 x 10.5 inch painting in 20 x 16 inch white 8-ply mat This modern abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2016. The colorful abstract is composed of calming tones of teal and dark blue. The contrasting patches of pinks and green beautifully pop against the subtle pale pink background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting includes an 20 x 16 inch 8 ply matte and is signed on the lower right hand corner. About the Artist: It is with her commitment to a lifelong, organic process that Jenny Nelson has achieved what so many artists and creatives work for; a language and a technique that is very much her own. She has wooed audiences here and abroad with consistently exquisite and balanced abstract paintings in neutral palettes of blues and grays that give way to pops of pink and orange. But to pin her as solely an abstractionist would be limiting her skill and versatility as a painter. Classically trained at Bard College, Nelson’s thorough knowledge of composition and color relationships as experienced through drawing from life are the tools that prepared her to work in abstraction and develop her technique. Nelson begins all her paintings the same way; she mixes an extensive palette of colors, preps the square canvas, and goes to town obliterating the surface with lots of color and wild gestures using oil sticks and brushes. After sitting with the discomfort and rawness that remains, Nelson turns the canvas around and around until a shape or color comes to the foreground. The next step is reductive as she blocks out bits of chaos with a solid color applied with a palette knife, oil sticks and brushes. Tension is built through the push and pull of paint as it is layered over colors and unruly forms. Nelson studies the painting at all stages of this process, waiting for it to communicate the next step until harmony and balance is achieved. Each work, with its own identity demanding attention and complete surrender to the process, may seem daunting at the onset. But Nelson is comforted by the perspective that painting is infinite and each new canvas is just one of many, therefore easing her expectations. Some pieces in this new body of work differ from previous paintings in that the abstractions are once again rooted in life. Inspired by the photographs of artist Joseph Podlesnik, Nelson uses his architectural and observational compositions as the framework for her new work. While the origins of the photographs’ subjects are not recognizable in the finished painting, she channels the energy discovered in his real-life findings to her canvas for a result that is entirely abstract. Invigorated by this approach, Nelson bravely moves forward, prepared to shift genres if that is where her journey takes her. A graduate of Bard College, Jenny Nelson also studied at the Lacoste School of the Arts in France and Maine College of Art. She completed a Residency at Byrdcliffe Art Colony from 2004 – 2008 and has exhibited regionally and nationally for many years. Nelson currently teaches workshops and an ongoing weekly class at the Woodstock School of Art. More about the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Always Part and Always Whole II - Abstract Acrylic on Paper
Located in Soquel, CA
Always Part and Always Whole II - Abstract Acrylic on Paper Soft pastels create this ethereal abstract, by Florida artist, Ronald Dennis Reams (American, b. 1950). Mat size: 16"H x 12"W Paper size: 9.88"H x 7.38"W Reams explores the energy of his art in a sculptural way, building layer upon layer, color upon color. This visceral interpretation aligns with Reams' intent to always paint in the moment, allowing the paint, the emotion, and the energy of the painting to direct what happens on the canvas. In the late nineties, Reams began putting vignettes of drawings and paintings together. He then built fifteen-foot panels of these fragments, creating the equivalent of abstract collage. These large-scale pieces reflected his search for a non-routine way of painting. This new media approach paved the way for the works that followed, as the artist carved out a distinct artistic style of his own. The artist began his formal education at Ringling School of Arts but credits his mentors - David Anderson, Edgar...
