After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of Jenkins’ work springs from a wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes", influenced by ancient natural forms. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters, and lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...

Sebastian Spreng, is a Miami-based artist born in Argentina, who at the early age of 17, had his first solo show at a gallery in Buenos Aires which was sold out at opening night. When he moved to Miami in 1987, the excess of sunshine made him change his approach to painting and his career blossomed. Since then, Spreng has participated in solo and group exhibitions from Boston to Seattle to Munich, Essen to Tokyo. His work is inspired on observations of everyday moments. As a hunter or seeker of color he experiments with colors that vibrate with life. "If I see a photograph or if I watch a movie and I see a color that I like, from that color, I start a new set of paintings," said Sebastian Spreng in an exclusive 2011 WUM interview. "The meaning of my art is a bridge to entice contemplation." In 2009 his work Daphne was selected for the book “Speak for the Trees” along 70 other artists including David Hockney, Christo, April Gornik, Yoko Ono, Julie Heffernan, Robert Longo, Mark Ryden, the Starn...

Untitled
By Richard Pousette-Dart
Located in Miami, FL
Acrylic on masonite. This is a pivotal work in deep and radiant cobalt blue from 1950. It dipicts calligraphic and hieroglyph structures over a grid and pyramidal base by the first generation abstract expressionist. Provenance: Skinner: November 13, 1992 [Lot 00219}, The entry in the Skinner catalog indicates that the painting came directly from the artist to the family of the consignor to Skinner. Kaminsky Auctions. There is an unbroken paper trail that traces the ownership of the painting from the current owner, through two auction houses to the artist. Perfect unbroken provenance. Pousette-Dart was among the most inventive of the Abstract Expressionist generation, His uncanny talent was to expand the nature of abstraction and still make each mark each element very much his own; a reflection of what he called   "the concealed power of the spirit," he said, “not of the brute physical form."   His was not aiming for a singular, realized aesthetic formula but to expand the possibilities of painting; the transcendental in painting. Typical of such invention and exploration is this  painting  Untitled 1950 when the artist was only 34 years old and represented by one of the champions of the new American painting, Betty Parsons.
A banner year for Pousette-Dart, the Museum of Modern Art acquired their first painting by the Minnesota born artist.  He worked on easel size works such as this painting an oil on masonite. At the same time Pousette-Dart was also working on larger scale works such as Path of the Hero, running over ten feet in length now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Both contain fields of color articulated by a highly sophisticated white hieroglyphic vocabulary. Rather than demonstrate an expressionist sensibility, Pousette-Dart harnesses his more cerebral ideas transforming thick areas of paint into a more refined composition of geometric forms akin to the pattern and forms of say a stained glass window. In a way he is looking back at Fugue, 1940 a black and white composition which makes use of a similar format of painting albeit smaller. Color and form are minimal, but what Pousette-Dart has maximized is the rhythmic and syncopated character of painting casting his ideas into purely symbolic terms that one might link to the pictograms of Adolph Gottlieb. Nonetheless, nature is always at the core of Pousette-Dart’s thinking and dreaming. Here he has transformed the local Ramapo Mountains—where he will eventually move with his family to live and work— into a complex series of articulated fragments linked by style, scale and color.  The painting’s imagery built on two large triangles and reduced to just two colors, cobalt blue and white all outlined in black.  Pousette-Dart symbols stacked in horizontal and vertical rows:  blue is ground, white is language, symbolic of light, consciousness and awareness . The painting maintains a mystical character images compounded that formulate a secret code and linked to the series of white paintings Pousette-Dart authored in the first half of the 1950s. Get up close to the picture and you discover images within images a kind of picture puzzle...

"Red Harmony" Abstract, Geometric, Colors, Bright Red, Green
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Red Harmony" is an abstract painting that does have a sculptural presence in the shapes of the red areas. The lush greens blend various shades into a background that while it does contrast sharply with the reds, it is not in conflict. The overall effect of this work is dynamic in its energy while at the same time harmonious. One of the original Cass Corridor artists from the 1960s William Antonow studied at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies) and at Wayne State University, where he received his BFA (1967) and MA (1970.) Antonow’s first one-person show at the Willis Gallery in 1971, represented a radical departure from his early work – abstract bronzes shown at the Michigan Artists exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1969 and 1970. A founding member of the Willis, Antonow publicized his exhibition with a cryptic invitation stating, “art isn’t anything.” Echoing the challenge implicit in the exhibition announcement, the works in the show consisted of precariously balanced piles of such non-art materials as wood crates and barrels, corrugated paper or cardboard, cellophane and beer cans. These brash, paint-slathered juxtapositions of salvaged objects were perhaps the first example of the nascent “tough art” aesthetic of the Cass Corridor. (Both Gordon Newton’s wood constructions and Bob Sestok’s crude “radio wheels” first appeared in 1972.) In 1975, in the inaugural group exhibition of the Willis at its new location in the Fisher Building...

Large Modern Abstract Cast Stencil Painting Paul Maxwell Mod Constructivist Neon
Located in Surfside, FL
Paul E. Maxwell (1925–2015) This is a unique painting on either paper or canvas. It is framed. Framed 46 X 34 sheet 41 X 29 inches Hand signed and dated. This can be hung either horizontally or vertically. Paul Maxwell was a modern artist and sculptor (known as both a Texas and a California artist) who developed a technique for using stencils to create thickly textured and layered surfaces, as well as objects he patented as “stencil casting” but that later became known as “Maxwell Pochoir.” He worked in numerous styles including Abstract Constructivist, Contemporary Modern and Abstract Expressionism. He was also known for creating the “Max Wall” in the West Atrium of the Dallas Apparel Mart; though demolished in 2006, it can be seen as a backdrop in the science-fiction movie Logan’s Run. His work is highly abstract and often consists of some kind of grid—a form that is non-hierarchical and illustrates a major theme of both his sculpture and his painting works. This piece is influenced by the Light and Space movement, a loosely affiliated art movement related to op art, minimalism and geometric abstraction originating in Southern California in the 1960s and influenced by John McLaughlin. Famous proponents included Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, Bruce Nauman, Eric Orr and James Turrell. Paul Maxwell was born in Frost Prairie (Ashley County) on September 17, 1925, to the farm family of Willie F. and Robert M. Maxwell. The sixth of seven children, Maxwell considered himself an artist from an early age and recalled the landscape of Frost Prairie as “pure form—wide unbroken fields of tall grass which the slightest breeze could shape into waves and ripples of golden light.” He said that drawing in the exposed clay soil there may have been an early inspiration for the kind of textured, expressionist, surfaces he would later create. When Maxwell was nine, the family moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, where he completed high school. Maxwell went on to graduate from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, in 1950 with a BA in art, followed by graduate work at Claremont College in California. While at Claremont, Maxwell had his first museum show in Stockton, California. In 1951, Maxwell exhibited his work at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in a show that included such artists as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Roberto Matta; also that year, he had his first commercial gallery exhibition. From 1955 to 1958, Maxwell taught at the Houston Museum of Art and at the University of Houston. From 1959 to 1961, he lectured and exhibited his work in Europe under the sponsorship of the U.S. Information Agency while maintaining a gallery in Switzerland. During the rest of the 1960s and into the 1970s and 1980s, Maxwell lived and worked in Texas and Oklahoma, receiving commissions for works in public spaces such as a mid century mod wall hanging relief sculpture in the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the free-standing sculpture for the lobby of the Stark County Library in Canton, Ohio. It was also during the 1970s that Maxwell developed and created pieces using his stencil-casting technique. similar in style to American Modernist Robert Natkin, In 1985, a twelve-minute documentary that dealt with Maxwell’s work was produced by Carol Schroeder and broadcast by PBS. The documentary, titled Paul Maxwell: Lines/Horizons, won the American Film Festival Red Ribbon Award for Best Short Documentary and the Mitchell Wilder Gold Medal Award given by the Texas Association of Museums, both in 1986. Maxwell was also the subject of the 2007 short film Through a Veil of Knowledge: The Legacy of Paul Maxwell, directed by Richard Balin. Maxwell had exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and in England, Switzerland, France, Canada, and Australia. The permanent collection at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock (Pulaski County) includes the Modernism masterpiece Regimenta (1980), an acrylic painting on paper. Paul Maxwell was born in 1925 in Frost Prairie, Arkansas. After earning his bachelor’s degree in art from Principia College, he studied under Millard Sheets at Claremont Graduate School in California. While in Houston, Maxwell taught art and exhibited regularly and successfully in statewide competitions. He holds the patent for his own printmaking medium, a process he calls “stencil-casting". His work bears a style and color affinity to 1980's modernist art movements such as Memphis Milano, (Ettore Sottsass, Peter Shire, etc.) with the bold colors and geometric shapes that characterized the era. His earlier work was also associated with the Pop Art era artists. Selected Exhibitions: 1948 10th Texas General Exhibition 1948–1949, circulated: Witte Museum, San Antonio; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas 1950 Scripps College, Claremont, California 1951 Solo, Pioneer Museum, Stockton, California 1951 Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California 1952 Solo, De Cordova Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts 1953 Solo, James Bute Gallery, Houston, Texas Texas; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas 1959 Solo, Galerie du Colisée, Paris, France 1959 34th Annual Houston Artists Exhibition, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas 1959 Made in Texas by Texans, Dallas Museum of Contemporary Art 1959 21st Annual Texas Painting and Sculpture Exhibition, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Witte Museum, San Antonio; Beaumont Art Museum, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas (purchase prize) 1959 Solo, Oklahoma Art...

In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco of Buddha, polychrome sculptures of the enlightened Bodhisattva, the Buddhist goddess of mercy Kuan-Yin, Indian bronzes of Hindu god Shiva, and statues of meditative Buddhist lohans. Serving in the US Naval Air Corps during the Second World War, Jenkins painted watercolours of Japanese Kabuki dancers and read the ancient Chinese poetic teachings of the I Ching and Lao Tse Tung’s Tao Te Ching...

"Ocean Waves #09" Mixed Media Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Ana Hefco's (US based) "Ocean Waves #09" is an original, hand made mixed media painting that depicts an abstracted color field of blue, teal and beige, that is reminiscent of an aerial/satellite image of a coastal beach where the waves crash on shore. Artist Bio and Statement: Born and raised in Bucharest Romania, I am a self-taught dreamer and artist. To dream is my path and to paint is my dream. Lack of control is not my strong suit, but in the painting process things are different. The resin (also known as liquid glass) has a mind of its own and I learn to mindfully let go every time I paint. I allow those liquid color induced emotions I feel to drive me and take lead of my hands and at the end of the process, it’s just music and bliss. My inspiration is always nature's force, balance, perfection in purpose and beauty. It can be a place I travelled or sailed to or just a feeling floating on our boat docked in a Turkish marina or just on anchor nearby a Greek taverna on a remote tiny island in the Mediterranean or Aegean Sea. It can be this artist as a little girl reading...
