Original oil on canvas painting in very heavy impasto of a cityscape by the Serbian/French artist, Nicolas Markovitch. Signed Philippe lower left, one of the pseudonyms used by the artist. Dated to the right of signature 1960. Condition is very good. Bourg-la-Reine is the likely subject matter of the painting and was where the artist had made his home until his death in 1964. The painting is housed in its original frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 28.75 by 25.25 inches. Provenance: A Ellenton, Florida collector. Bourg-la-Reine is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 9.1 km (5.7 mi) from the center of Paris. Nicolas Markovitch (Serbian-French, 1894-1964), artist, watercolorist, architect and block printer. Markovitch used more than a few pseudonyms over the course of his career, such as; A. Marc or just Marc, and J. Philippe or Jean Philippe. Alternate sources state other pseudonyms with the full name listed as Andre Marc or Andre Marc Rothenburg, which are both still incorrect for the artist. Markovitch was an architect who worked and lived in France, and is primarily known for his architectural paintings of city buildings, cathedrals and monuments, along with Swiss, Italian, German, English and Belgian landscapes, cityscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes, lake and marine scenes, and many scenes in the U.S. especially cityscapes of New York City and other places such as Gloucester, MA. Markovitch painted watercolor illustrations for several books (Paris, Editions, Alpina) from the late 1920's-early 40's, and is credited for the watercolors in the Editions with his real name Nicolas Markovitch or N. Markovitch. He was one of the best watercolorists of the time and went on to do a lot of work with the Stehli Brothers company Stehli Frères, Editeurs, Zurich, Switzerland throughout the 1930's and 40's. Stehli Frères published many different watercolor series of his works, and they were printed in various sizes, typically from about 9" x 12" to 12" x 16", and others as large as 18" x 24".?? Here for your consideration is a very interesting figurative painting by the well know American artist, Ben Stahl. Dedicated to Helen lower left and signed and dated lower left by the artist, 1978. Titled verso. Condition is excellent. The painting is mounted over a matted period thin decorated gold frame. Overall framed measurements are 17 by 13.5 inches. Frame and mat in fine condition. Provenance: Saint Petersburg, Florida estate. Benjamin Albert Stahl (September 7, 1910 – October 19, 1987) was an American artist, illustrator and author. He showed precocious talent, winning a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago at age twelve. His artwork appeared in the International Watercolor Show at the Art Institute when he was sixteen. He later taught at the Art Institute, as well as at the American Academy of Art, the Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn's Pratt Institute and at various universities. Stahl won many prizes, including the Saltus Gold Medal of the National Academy of Design. His work appeared in Women's Home Companion, Cosmopolitan, American Artist, North Light, Esquire, the Chicago Tribune Magazine, Picture Post, Southwest Art and in some 750 stories in The Saturday Evening Post. He was featured in the 1976 television series Journey into Art with Ben Stahl, 26 half-hour programs consisting of lectures and painting demonstrations by the artist. This is a large colorful, bold, vibrant original oil painting on canvas, hand signed and dated 1989. It is titled Crete. Joan Thorne (1943-) is a New York artist nationally and internationally recognized. A third generation Abstract Expressionist woman artist who has exhibited works over the past 30 years. Her art has been shown in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum’s Annual Exhibition, the Grand Palais in Paris, and Barbara Rose’s seminal exhibition American Painting: The Eighties at New York University’s Grey Gallery. Her recent shows in New York City have been reviewed by the New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews and The New Criterion among others. Her work has been compared to Elizabeth Murray work. It is colorful and has a 1980's, Memphis Milano feel to it. Thorne grew up in Greenwich Village. Her mother was a Ukrainian immigrant from a musical family, who became an English teacher; her father, a surgeon. Recognizing their daughter’s artistic talents early, they enrolled her at age six in the Little Red Schoolhouse on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, a pioneer in educational reform, the school has continued to maintain its reputation as a progressive and nurturing catalyst for creative children. Pete Seeger, the folk singer, performed there so frequently that Thorne remembered him as if he were one of the teachers. In 1971, Thorne met Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) and joined her as a teacher at the Women’s House of Detention on Rikers Island in a new program called “Art without Walls–Free Space.” The program, which had been born from the civil rights movement, was aimed at enriching the lives of the inmates. Thorne and her peers came of age struggling against sexism in the art establishment and its attendant lack of exhibition opportunities for women. Since 1985, this issue had been loudly exposed by the public protests of the Guerrilla Girls, whose members remain a well-kept secret. Her painting has been included in two Whitney Museum Biennials and various other museum group exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has had numerous one person shows in galleries such as: Sideshow Gallery New York, Fischbach Gallery, New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Willard Gallery, New York, Graham & Sons Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York City, and the National Arts Club among others. Thorne has been awarded the Prix de Rome Fellowship to paint at the American Academy in Rome. She also received two National Endowment grants for painting and two Pollock Krasner Grants among others. "Since 1973, while myriad styles, movements and mediums have flourished briefly in turn, Joan Thorne has steadfastly developed one visual language-that of painterly surface, light, color and distilled form-which she finds best suited for her artistic project: intimating dreams. intuitions and the psychic consequences of travel.
