1972 original poster by Albert Brenet for the Musée français du chemin de fer

By Albert Brenet

Located in PARIS, FR

The 1972 original poster by Albert Brenet for the Musée français du chemin de fer in Mulhouse is a captivating work that captures the essence of France's rich railway heritage. Created by the renowned French painter and illustrator, the poster reflects Brenet’s talent for depicting scenes of transportation and industry with a sense of grandeur and nostalgia. This piece was part of a promotional campaign to attract visitors to the museum, which is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of French railways. Albert Brenet was a distinguished artist known for his dynamic illustrations, particularly in the fields of maritime and transport subjects. His work is characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a vibrant, lifelike quality that brings industrial scenes to life. In this 1972 poster, Brenet turns his attention to the world of trains, presenting an evocative scene that highlights both the mechanical beauty of the locomotive and the human connection to it. The poster features a striking depiction of a historic steam locomotive, rendered in rich, vivid colors. The powerful engine, meticulously detailed, stands as a symbol of the technological advancements and the spirit of progress that defined the railway era. The setting, likely a large train shed or museum hall, creates a dramatic backdrop that emphasizes the grandeur of the locomotive. Brenet’s skillful use of light and shadow adds depth and realism, making the engine appear almost tangible. At the heart of the scene are two figures—likely visitors to the museum—gazing up at the locomotive in awe. Their presence adds a human element to the image, emphasizing the role of the Musée français du chemin de fer as a place of education and inspiration. By including these figures, Brenet captures the wonder and curiosity that trains continue to evoke, bridging the gap between past and present. The text on the poster, Musée français du chemin de fer - Mulhouse, is elegantly placed, with a clean, classic typeface that complements the visual composition without detracting from the central image. The simple, yet effective typography reflects the museum’s focus on heritage and the timeless appeal of the railway. The Musée français du chemin de fer, located in Mulhouse, Alsace, is one of the largest railway museums in Europe. Established to preserve the rich history of French rail transport, the museum houses an extensive collection of locomotives, carriages, and railway artifacts. The poster by Brenet was part of an effort to promote the museum to a broader audience, inviting them to explore the fascinating world of trains and their impact on modern society. The 1972 poster is not only a piece of advertising but also an artwork that encapsulates the spirit of the museum. Brenet’s artistic interpretation captures the essence of the museum’s mission: to celebrate the technological and cultural achievements of the railway industry and to share this legacy with future generations. Today, the poster is considered a collector’s item, valued for both its artistic merit and its historical significance. It serves as a reminder of the golden age of rail travel and the enduring fascination with the power and elegance of trains. Albert Brenet’s work continues to be admired for its ability to convey the majesty of industrial subjects, making the Musée français du chemin de fer poster...

Andrew Wyeth, Burning Off, from The Four Seasons (after)

By Andrew Wyeth

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph after Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009), titled Burning Off, originates from the distinguished 1962 folio The Four Seasons: Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth. Published and printed by Art in America Company, Inc., New York, the edition captures Wyeth’s poetic meditation on atmosphere and transformation. Burning Off depicts a summer morning’s sea fog gradually lifting from the landscape, revealing the tranquil geometry of field and horizon. Through restrained tonal contrasts and delicate textural nuance, Wyeth conveys both the mystery and stillness of the natural world in transition. Executed on velin paper, this lithograph measures 17 x 13 inches (43.2 x 33 cm). As issued, it is signed in the plate and unnumbered, representing the folio’s authentic format. The Four Seasons series was conceived by the editors of Art in America in collaboration with Andrew and Betsy Wyeth, who selected drawings from the artist’s studio and personal collection to embody the cyclical poetry of the seasons. Each image reflects Wyeth’s profound sensitivity to light, time, and emotion—his ability to evoke the spiritual essence of landscape through quiet realism. Artwork Details: Artist: After Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) Title: Burning Off, from The Four Seasons, Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth, 1962 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 17 x 13 inches (43.2 x 33 cm) Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1962 Publisher: Art in America Company, Inc., New York Printer: Art in America Company, Inc., New York Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1962 folio The Four Seasons, Paintings and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth, published and printed by Art in America Company, Inc., New York Notes: Excerpted from the 1962 folio: "In 1962 the editors of Art in America proposed to Wyeth a portfolio of images of his recent dry-brush drawings. The artist and his wife suggested the theme, 'The Four Seasons,' because of the essential role played in his work by the cycle of the seasons. The drawings were selected by Andrew and Betsy Wyeth from works in the house and studio at Chadds Ford, supplemented by some owned by friends. With a few exceptions they had never been exhibited or reproduced. The plates were made directly from the originals. In these drawings Wyeth's loving concentration on the object is fully revealed. But as always in his work, this concern with the tangible is balanced by sensibility to mood, to the emotion arising from the actual. They are pervaded with a sense of the season—the exact time of year, the hour of the day, the quality of the light. To the truth and subtlety with which he captures these intangible factors, these drawings owe their poignant poetry." About the Artist: Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) was an American visual artist and one of the best-known painters of the mid-20th century. Although he considered himself an abstractionist, Wyeth’s work is characterized by a meticulous realism imbued with psychological depth and atmosphere. He often painted the landscapes and people surrounding his homes in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Cushing, Maine, creating an intimate record of American rural life. The son of the celebrated illustrator N. C. Wyeth, Andrew trained under his father before developing his own deeply personal visual language inspired by Winslow Homer, Henry David Thoreau, and King Vidor. His wife, Betsy Wyeth, was both his muse and career manager, while his son Jamie Wyeth continued the family’s artistic legacy. Among Wyeth’s best-known works is Christina’s World (1948), housed in the Museum of Modern Art, New York—a quintessential image of 20th-century American art. His other notable series include The Helga Pictures and his window studies, each reflecting a profound meditation on solitude, memory, and perception. Wyeth was the first painter to receive both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, and was elected to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1980. In 2022, Andrew Wyeth's painting Day Dream sold for USD 23.29 million at Christie’s New York, setting a world record for the artist. Andrew Wyeth lithograph...

Henschel Locomotive, large color etching

By Luigi Kasimir

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork titled "Henschel Locomotive" c.1940 is a color etching by Austrian artist Luigi Kasimir 1881-1962. It is hand signed by the estate in pencil at the lower center. The plate mark (image) size is 25.75 x 20.5 inches, the sheet size is 34 x 27 inches. with full margin. it is in excellent condition, has never been framed, it has some soft handling creases at the edge of the margin. About the artist. Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 at Pettau, today Ptuj, Slovenia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He inherited his talent from his ancestors; his grandfather was a painter and a poet, and his father an officer in the Habsburg army, who later became a professional painter. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under Wilhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the coloured etching, and also to his future wife, the artist Tanna Hoernes.[1] He died in 1962 in Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna.Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the coloured etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-coloured with the colour being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch usually in pastel, he then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the colour on the plate, all done by hand. Kasimir is mainly famous for his etchings, but he also produced some oil painting, as well as some pastels. One of his favourite genres was the landscape, or veduta. He demonstrated a predisposition street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York City skyscrapers, to natural wonders like Yosemite Valley. Luigi Kasimir’s etchings...
