"Beach-Combed Mochaware, " Mixed Media Sculpture
Located in Chicago, IL
Based in Chicago, IL, contemporary artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites, collages and mixed media works assembled from material fragments of past and present collected in his travels. In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life.
Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest.
Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...

Zsolt Berszán’s work speaks of repulsion and fascination and at the same time speaks about shapes that lie on the border between hallucination and obsession wherein the identity and order were disrupted.
Themes such as the double and the metamorphosis, otherwise put, themes of atrophied characters are all representations of the abject.
Berszán’s creation is located at the fine border between the representation of identity and its dissolution thusly aiming to represent the non-symbolized. The dynamic separation and the transitional object...

Murmuration 1
By Adria Arch
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary:
I create painted biomorphic sculptural works and installations from PVC sheets. This piece is suspended from architectural elements or nature, and combines the formal concerns of painting while extending into space like sculpture. This piece, and many of my works, are inspired by dance.
Keywords: Abstract, Expressive & Gestural, Modern & Minimalist, Playful, Happy & Whimsical
Artist Biography:
Adria Arch creates painted biomorphic sculptural works and installations. Suspended from architectural elements or nature, this work combines the formal concerns of painting while extending into space like sculpture. The individual pieces hang in relationships, creating installations that require the viewer to enter the defined space and discover new viewpoints with each movement. Twist, turn, spin, leap – these words evoke the dance-like movements that inform these installations. Expressing a physical experience of the world, they reach into the realm of both theater and child’s play. Referencing decorative elements and colors typical of mid-20th century women’s clothing, comic books, and street art, Arch uses...
