American Story No.1875

By Kat Flyn

Located in New Orleans, LA

KAT FLYN is a self-taught assemblage artist working presently out of San Diego. She began her career as a costume designer in Southern California. Over the years she amassed a trove of artifacts and collectables which she began using to create assemblage art in the 1990’s. In 2000 she sold her business and moved to Cuyamaca, a remote community in the mountains outside of San Diego to devote herself exclusively to her artwork. In 2003 her work was interrupted when the Cedar Fire swept through San Diego county and destroyed the forest, her home & studio along with almost all of her collections and works of art. Following the fire she relocated to San Francisco, where she spent a decade concentrating on her art in her studio in SOMA and exhibiting at galleries in the Bay Area. In 2015 she returned to San Diego and now works out of her studio in La Jolla, exhibiting there and in Los Angeles. Kat Flyn refers to herself as an Assemblage Sculptor and her works as Political Art or Protest Art. She separates herself from other assemblage artists in that she only employs “saved” as opposed to “found” objects in her work; and her pieces always have a political or cultural narrative to them rather than being surreal or abstract. She also constructs or refashions many of the pieces which she uses in her art, for example she turns a soft drink box...

Located in Denver, CO

"Beasts of Burden" (2023) by Andy Evansen is an original handmade watercolor painting on paper that depicts a midwestern plain, with a sunset from a passing storm. This piece measures 11 x 15 inches, and 16 x 20 inches in its frame. Andy Evansen’s interest in art started in childhood, as he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. He began painting watercolors in the mid 1990s as a change of pace from his career as a medical illustrator. Choosing a ‘style’ was not difficult, as Andy was always inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain, David Curtis...

Takashi Murakami Skateboard Decks set of 2 (Murakami Flowers)

Takashi Murakami Skateboard Decks set of 2 (Murakami Flowers)

By Takashi Murakami

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Takashi Murakami Flowers Skateboard Decks (set of 2 works): The black & white deck marks a collaboration between Takashi Murakami and his friend, the rising Japanese artist 'Madsaki' (bio below). The impression is an urban twist on Takashi Murakami’s otherwise highly polished flowers motif - a beautiful juxtaposition between two very different styles from two masters of their craft. This limited work was published by Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Gallery Japan in 2017. The blue was published circa 2017 in conjunction with the Murakami exhibit: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, MCA Chicago. A brilliant set that makes for vibrant, one of a kind wall-art that hangs with ease. Medium: Silkscreen on 2 individual Maple Wood skateboard decks. Crisp colors. Dimensions: 8.0 x 31 inches (20.5 x 79 cm) Condition: each housed in its original packaging; excellent overall condition. Each from a sold out limited edition of unknown; stamped by the artist on the reverse of each. Perhaps Murakami's most iconic motif, these candy-colored, smiling flowers came into the artist's work when he was preparing for his entrance exams for the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, and he embraced the form over nine years teaching prep-school students to draw flowers. One of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from postwar Asia, Takashi Murakami—“the Warhol of Japan”—is known for his contemporary Pop synthesis of fine art and popular culture, particularly his use of a boldly graphic and colorful anime and manga cartoon style. MADSAKI (b. Japan 1974) Joining Murakami has led to a rapid evolution of Madsaki. Now with three Kaikai exhibitions under his belt––Hickory Dickory Dock; Here Today, Gone Tomorrow; and MADSAKI Says “Yo! snipe1 & UFO907, Get Your Asses Over Here!” Madsaki has made a firm imprint on the Murakami canon. In his introduction to Madsaki’s second solo exhibit, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow from 2017, Murakami jokingly points out how his direction and guidance successfully shaped Madsaki’s work. While the debt Madsaki owes to Murakami is patently clear, in an abrupt turnabout it appears that the apprentice guides the master in some ways as well...

''La Baigneuse'', Contemporary Bronze Sculpture of an Elephant Sunbathing

''La Baigneuse'', Contemporary Bronze Sculpture of an Elephant Sunbathing

By Miep Maarse

Located in Utrecht, NL

The optimistic bronze sculptures of Dutch artist Miep Maarse (1945) are a feast for the eyes. Dancing elephants, bathing hippos and playing bears characterize her oeuvre. The images are optimistic in tone and message. Through her images she shows us her positive view of the world and humanity. She shapes her sculptures in a professional and original way. The animals have recognizable human characteristics, which radiate great charm and tenderness. At first glance, this seems simple and charming. The opposite is true. You must have studied man and his behavior extremely well in order to make this translation. A hippopotamus - not a gentle animal at all - transforms into a friendly big lug who dances, dives or acts like an English lord. What is special is that Maarse finds her images so natural that people do not immediately realize that what they are actually doing is not possible. In ''Between the Ears'' the mother elephant with her child between her ears looks so natural and realistic and is so moving and playful. Almost casually, Miep Maarse asks the obligatory question: "How realistic is realistic?" Everyone will immediately admit that her images are not realistic. But what are they then? Surrealistic maybe? Strangely enough, it is obvious to place them in that movement, but everyone feels that something is not right. After all, with surrealism we immediately think of bizarre situations and alienation, while Miep Maarse's animal sculptures radiate something familiar and domestic. Due to the metamorphosis that her animals undergo, they enter the realm of fabulous creatures. The animal sculptures are liberating because the depicted animals have different codes of conduct than the people who imitate them. Miep Maarse received her education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. ''La Baigneuse...

The majesty of woodland animals is celebrated in these striking metal sculptures by the Six Nations Mohawk artist Adam Monture. Monture’s beautiful paintings of woodland animals—bears, deer, wolves, turtles, loons and herons were re-imagined as 3-dimensional sculptures hand forged from aluminum. Each animal and bird appears as a ‘double’—one image mirrors the other; the exterior sculpture...

Dance of Balance

Dance of Balance

By Ben Young

Located in New York, NY

Ben Young’s sculpture fluidly blends glass, concrete, bronze, steel, and light to depict romantic and pensive imagery highlighting the fragility of our climate and its most precious resource – water. Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, Young is an avid surfer and environmentalist, inspired by a lifetime on and around oceans, bays, and reefs, with an intimate understanding of the challenges our precious ecosystems face. Young’s thought-provoking sculpture shows great range, portraying the beauty and solitude of life on the ocean, haunting depths of the deep sea, and stunning and relaxing upside of island life. Water is many things to many people, which Young encapsulates brilliantly in his work, encompassing themes of sustainability throughout. Using concrete to create mountains, crevasses, sand bars, and cliffs, Young’s innovative use of materials is transportative. With hand-carved glass as his guiding medium, Young amplifies light and its relationship with water – our most sacred element – to create a glowing unity that people from around the world connect with on a personal level, whether they are beachside or in the Desert. Ben Young’s exhibition Delicate Space at Chesterfield Gallery...
