By Kristofer LAMEY

Located in Atlanta, GA

Born and raised in Atlanta, Kristofer Laméy has brought much to the southeastern art and design table. From debuting his unique design perspective in the 2007 ICFF in New York City and showcasing his Art at Aqua during the 2008 Art Basel in Miami, to his solo Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) exhibit titled “Serving Form” in 2010, Kristofer is best known for his one-off commissioned sculptural art forms. His work has found a place in homes and collections across the globe. One of his most ambitious design challenges was solving a decades-long problem in the aviation industry: How to more efficiently design and install jet aircraft interiors. This was the birth of AIMS. Kristofer’s work straddles a fine line that resides between art and design. Many, lost within the engineering of his creations, like to push his work out of the category of art and into the realm of design. This line is the fulcrum that leverages his work into a playing field of his own, and he is proud of that. Those looking for solutions in the marketplace that are in need of an outside perspective to differentiate a product benefit from his fresh and creative approach to modern manufacturing. In April 2020 Kristofer moved his family to the North Georgia mountain...

Allegro Con Brio - contemporary, figurative, acrylic and thread sculpture

Located in Bloomfield, ON

This large contemporary clear acrylic sculpture of a piano was inspired by the artist’s love of music. This beautiful and magical piece of modern art is the unique vision of an award-winning author and music lover. Years ago, Ruth Kassinger noticed how sunlight streaming through her living room windows bounced off white walls, through a glass coffee table, and splashed rainbows around the room. When her eyes drifted to the black baby grand piano in the room, she had an epiphany. The idea for a full-scale, transparent piano sculpture filled with colors was born. To create the piano, she worked with a talented team of acrylic glass artisans who created the piano’s body and its keyboard. Using laser technology, thousands of holes were drilled both by computer and by hand to ensure that all of the threads are perfectly parallel. Then, using small acrylic boxes as models, Kassinger spent a year testing various threads to determine spacing and color combinations until they expressed her vision of music. “It takes me months to thread a piano. I use embroidery needles that I manipulate with long-handled surgical forceps. The highly polished, clear acrylic form allows light to flow through the sculpture, illuminating the thousands of multi-hued nylon and French silk threads. The threads change color as you move around the piano and, thanks to an optical phenomenon called moiré, they appear to move as if being played.” Kassinger is best known for her books about science, history, and gardening. As a science writer, she has studied and written about the concepts of transparency and color. As a music lover, Kassinger’s personal experience of listening to music is heightened by a form of synaesthesia where she actually sees colors when she hears music. And, having grown up in a family of craftsmen (her parents had a custom furniture business and she later designed several pieces for her own home), she has the skills to undertake her first sculptural piece: a ‘glass’ piano...

"Owl" Bronze Sculpture, Caricature, Rich Dark Brown Surface

"Owl" Bronze Sculpture, Caricature, Rich Dark Brown Surface

Located in Detroit, MI

The bronze sculpture "Owl" is an exaggerated rendition of an owl that emphasizes the bird's most prominant characteristics - a big fluffy round body and large unblinking eyes making it a charicature of the bird. It is very touchable and calls for one to pet its rounded back. Tom Brun, the sculptor and zookeeper, is well-known for his wood, stone, marble, ceramics and ivory sculptures. One of them, a large hippopotamus, carved from walnut wood travelled the world in the State Department collection. It is said that Tom would often go into a house and pick up one of his sculptures and say that it was unfriendly – meaning that it had not been handled enough. Morley Driver has said of Brun in a newspaper article from the 1950’s “In Any Animal He Sees Beauty”: No one who has ever seen a Tom Brun hippopotamus will ever again think of it as ugly or ungainly, meaning that the artist not only gives you beauty but teaches you to see it. Tom has said: “Small pieces are like a proverb – a gem of meaning that one can dissect.” They are meant to be picked up, caressed and held. This owl, too, seems destined to be caressed. Brun was born in England in 1913. A few years after the end of World War I his father moved the family in 1919 to Detroit, Michigan. In 1935 at age 23, he officially became a U.S. citizen. He served in the army during World War II for five years and upon discharge and at the age of 36 took advantage of the GI Bill and applied for admission to Society of Arts and Crafts (now known as the College for Creative Studies) where he was gladly accepted. While at Arts and Crafts his instructors and established artists such as Sarkis Sarkisian, John P. Foster, Morris Brose, Richard Koslow, Patricia Burnett, Lloyd and Renee Radell...

"Bronze Bull" is an exquisite example of Morris Brose's abstract/figurative sculpture. No soft edges on this piece and no invitation to caress, the power, strength and beauty of the bronze are front and center and create awe. "Bronze Bull" is a free-standing piece signed on the base. Morris Brose, Polish/American was born in Wyszkow, Poland. He became a sculptor and instructor of sculpture at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski...
