Caerulea - British Art Deco c1935 watercolour and ink figurative painting

Located in Hagley, England

This beautiful British Art Deco 1930's water colour and ink painting on paper is by well respected artist Averil Mary Burleigh. Painted circa 1935 the composition is of three female figures with flowing robes and head dresses with slender tree trunks beyond them and vivid blue of the sky meeting the sea. (Caerula pertains to the colour of the sky and sea). They are playing between them with two balls or globes. A beautiful painting full of fun and movement and that amazing blue. Signed lower left, and inscribed on a label verso. Provenance: Surrey estate. Condition. Water colour and ink on paper. Image size is 24 inches by 16 inches and in excellent condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame. Framed size is 30 inches by 22 inches and in good condition. Averil Mary Burleigh born Averil Mary Dell (1883 – 1949) was a British artist and painter. Based in Sussex, Burleigh was known for painting in egg tempera with the subject usually involving a central figure. Her husband and daughter also painted but she is the best regarded of the three. Burleigh was born in 1883 in Hassocks in West Sussex and went on to study at the Brighton School of Art. She married the painter Charles Burleigh and they lived and worked together as artists in Hove and Sussex. They designed a house with a large sun-lit top floor studio. Their daughter Veronica, who would also become a notable artist, was born there in 1909. The family never became rich from their works, and often relied on Burleigh's flair for buying and selling shares. In 1911 Burleigh illustrated a book of John Keats' poetry and went on to illustrate plays by Shakespeare. In 1913 she was featured in Studio magazine. In 1927 Burleigh illustrated Thistledown by Leolyn Louise Everett. From 1939 she was a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. Burleigh became very ill in the 1940s, dying in 1949. Shortly before she died, Burleigh was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. Burleigh specialised in tempera painting, although she also worked in chalk and watercolour. Her works tend to have a bright colour palette with contrasting colours to lead the eye around the picture. A sharp luminosity and strong sense of design govern Burleigh's tempera and watercolour paintings. Frequently, her works portray decorative renaissance subjects, usually dominated by a female figure who is regularly modelled on her daughter, Veronica Burleigh...

Margrete Levy 1881-1962 Levy was a Danish artist; she worked in Paris from 1905-1911. Levy was niece to the Danish master painter Kristian Zartmann. She married French author Louis Nicolai Levy in 1911. She applied for technical school at Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl's school before applying for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts for Women, where she studied at Viggo Johansen 1900-1902. When she returned home, she continued her education in 1904-05 at Bertha and Dorph's painting school. In 1905, she traveled to Paris and taught at various drawing schools while studying the collections of the Louvre, especially Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired her for the symbolic painting Five Sisters , 1905, which she debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition the following year. 1906-07 she was a student at the French Academy in Rome. With a few interruptions she exhibited at Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition 1913-43, and on several occasions she also participated in Charlottenborg's Autumn Exhibition and the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. She had several personal exhibitions, including 1910 in Ole Haslunds Hus, 1919 and 1923 in Kunstforeningen, 1927 at Møntergården and 1945 in Alfred Andersen's Art Shop. She participated in several foreign exhibitions, for example Modern Danish Artists in Brighton, England 1912, and Exposition présentée par le Club international Féminin , Paris 1958. She was often represented at exhibitions reserved for women, for example Nine Painters in Admiral Gjeddes Gaard, in 1936 and Nordic Artists in Stockholm 1948. She participated in the Women's Artists Retrospective Exhibition in 1920, which was organized by the Women's Artists Society, on whose board she sat. Along with 18 other members, including Anna and Helga Ancher, Christine Swane, Elisabeth Neckelmann and, Olivia Holm-Møller, she exhibited at the Kunstforeningen in 1930. Early 20th Century British illustration of a hornbill bird by Edward Detmold
Early 20th Century British illustration of a hornbill bird by Edward Detmold

Early 20th Century British illustration of a hornbill bird by Edward Detmold

By Edward Julius Detmold

Located in Petworth, West Sussex

Edward Julius Detmold (British, 1883 – 1957) Hornbill Pen and ink on paper Signed with initials’ ED’ (lower right) 16.3 x 15.8 cm. Edward Julius Detmold (21 November 1883 Putney, Wandsworth, Surrey - 1 July 1957 Montgomery) and his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were prolific Victorian book illustrators. Their parents were Edward Detmold and Mary Agnes Luck. Their father, an electrical engineer was chronically ill, and they lived with their uncle and guardian, Dr Edward Barton Shuldham, who saw to their tuition and was a noted collector of porcelain and Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. Dr Shuldham occupied a house in Upper Richmond Road, Putney, where the twins had been born. He ensured their interest in natural history and art, and created a nurturing environment for their precocious talents. They also spent time with another uncle, the painter Henry E. Detmold, who encouraged them in their art. Most of their prodigious energy was expended on depicting animal subjects and their work showed great influence from traditional Japanese art, Albrecht Dürer and later the Art Nouveau movement. They were exhibiting watercolours at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the age of 13. Edward Burne-Jones praised their work and warned against the dangers of uniformity inherent in art schools. The twins subsequently mastered the techniques of watercolour etching and of colour printing with copper plates, buying a printing press and producing their own proofs at home. In 1898 they compiled a portfolio of colour etchings of animals and flowering plants done in the Japanese style. These were much sought after and were rapidly sold out. They collaborated on the etchings and illustrations for their first book Pictures From Birdland published in 1899. This book resulted from a number of drawings being shown in the autumn of 1897, to the publisher J. M. Dent, who was so impressed that the two brothers were asked to provide coloured illustrations for a book of his. The first title mooted was Alphabet of Birds, eventually becoming Pictures from Birdland. "Particularly noticeable are the early influences in the paintings, Edward's design for an osprey, with its unusual water effects, testifying to a Japanese contribution. Already apparent is that style in which a searching study of natural forms, especially bird plumage, is subordinated to decorative arrangement" - David Larkin (The Fantastic Creatures of Edward Julius Detmold) This was followed in 1900, by an exhibition at the Fine Art Society's Gallery in London. Their next joint project was to produce a set of 16 watercolours for Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book published in 1903, by Macmillan. The success of their painting careers seemed assured, but Maurice ended his life by inhaling chloroform in April 1908, shortly before they were due to leave for a holiday in Sussex with Dr Shuldham, who had arranged that Maurice put down the household cats using the anaesthetic. Although stunned by the death of Maurice, Edward threw himself into his work. The recognition accorded the twins' illustrations of Kipling's classic tale was extraordinary. Consequently, in 1909 Edward illustrated The Fables of Aesop, producing 23 colour plates and a host of pen & ink drawings. This proved so popular that in 2006 The Folio Society of London published a facsimile of the original Hodder & Stoughton edition. In 1911, Detmold worked on illustrations for Maurice Maeterlinck's The Life of the Bee, Camille Lemonnier's Birds and Beasts and Florence Dugdale's Book of Baby Beasts. In the following year he worked on Maeterlinck's Hours of Gladness, in 1913, on Florence Dugdale's Book of Baby Birds and in 1919, on W. H. Hudson's Birds in Town and Village In 1919, he also produced a portfolio of Twenty Four Nature Pictures and, in 1921, on Our Little Neighbours and Jean-Henri...
