(創作版画 Mid-Century Japanese Coloured Woodblock Print. Ploughing the Fields.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid-Century coloured woodblock print of 'ploughing the fields' by 20th century Japanese artist Ini Kumo. The print is hand-signed in pencil, dated 1966 and numbered 130/700 to the bottom right and presented under glass in a black wooden frame.
A beautiful woodblock printed image of a Japanese farmer in traditional attire ploughing the land with his ox. It is early evening and as the sun goes down it casts long shadows in front of the two figures. Perhaps the farmer is on his way back to the houses grouped in the distance already in shadow. The artist has carefully picked out areas of vibrant green and blue to give energy and colour to the image which contrast against the black of the ox.
A thoroughly enchanting image.
Ini Kumo is a recognised Sõsaku-hanga artist. His work is included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Sōsaku-hanga (創作版画, "creative prints") was an art movement of woodblock printing which was conceived in early 20th-century Japan. It stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principles of art that is "self-drawn" (自画 jiga), "self-carved" (自刻 jikoku) and "self-printed" (自摺 jizuri). As opposed to the parallel shin-hanga ("new prints") movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor.
The birth of the sōsaku-hanga movement was signaled by Kanae Yamamoto...

Produced for Kelly's collaboration with the August, 1982 No. 250 "Derrière Le Miroir: Hommage à Aimé et Marguerite Maeght" portfolio. Text on verso as issued.
Kelly produced the drawing for "Lotus" in Spencertown, New York, and sent the transfer-paper study to Paris for proofing. It was included in the final memorial issue of 'Derriere Le Miroir' with prints by Eduardo Chillida, Takis, Pierre Alechinsky, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Shusaku, Arakawa, and Saul Steinberg, to name only a few of the 24 artists who provided original graphic work for this issue. "Lotus" was based on the ink drawing "Lotus" (EK No. P74.65).
In October 1945, the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine Derriere Le Miroir was created in October 1946 and published without interruption until 1982. Maeght's ambition in establishing his print shop and his publication magazine Derriere Le Miroir was to make available to a broader audience less expensive printed imagery by the artists of his time, many whom were represented by his Paris gallery. Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time.
The magazine covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them are (in alphabetical order): Henri-Georges Adam, Pierre Alechinsky, Bacon, Jean Bazaine, Georges Braque, Pol Bury, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Roger Chastel...

'Geese on a Lake', Chinese scroll, calligraphy, Sumi-e, Song, Yuan Dynasty
By Ren Renfa
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Chinese School, 20th century; After Ren Renfa (Qinglongzhen, 1255-1328). Signed center right in Chinese with artist chop mark for 'Yueshan Daoren' 月山道人, brush name for Ren Renfa.
(Qinglongzhen [now Qingpu, Songjiang, Shanghai Municipality], b.1255; d. 1328).
Chinese painter. Under the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) he became an official, rising to the level of Vice-President of the River Conservation Bureau. He was famous for his paintings of horses, which were much admired by both his Mongol and Chinese patrons. In horse painting he followed in the tradition of the Song-period (960–1279) artist Li Gonglin, which was characterized by use of the ‘iron-wire’ line and a minimum of shading. Ultimately, however, Ren’s style can be traced to the Tang (ad 618–907) painters Yan Liben and Han Gan.
Ren’s earliest surviving painting is dated 1280, indicating that he was a mature artist by his mid-twenties. Although he worked as an official under the alien Mongol emperors, he was capable of paintings that incorporated clear political messages. The most famous is Fat and Lean Horses (Beijing, Pal. Mus.), in which, according to his inscription, the fat horse...

Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands is generally credited as the first published work to provide illustrations and descriptions of North American flora and fauna. From 1722-1726 Catesby, an English naturalist, ranged over South Carolina, Georgia and the Bahamas sketching and collecting specimens of native plants and animals.
Skunks are North and South American mammals in the family Mephitidae. While related to polecats and other members of the weasel family, skunks have as their closest Old World relatives the stink badgers. The animals are known for their ability to spray a liquid with a strong, unpleasant scent.
Biography:
Mark Catesby (24 March 1683 – 23 December 1749) was an English naturalist. Between 1729 and 1747 Catesby published his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America. It included 220 plates of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, mammals and plants. Little is known of Catesby's early life. He was born in eastern England in 1683. Although Catesby does not appear to have attended university or studied for the Bar, he was sufficiently educated to write clear English and Latin. His interest in and knowledge of plants may have derived from his uncle, who maintained a botanical garden. Catesby also appears to have benefited from an acquaintance with John Ray, a leading English naturalist of the 17th century and the co-author of an early classic study of birds...

Bibliographie /Literature
Gaston Suisse, splendeur du laque art déco. Emmanuel Bréon. Somogy Éditions d'art, Paris 2013, reproduite page 105 (un autre exemplaire reproduit)
The artist made a wood engraving of which he made about twenty prints himself.
These proofs were not marketed as is, Gaston Suisse reworked each of the proofs using Indian ink washes in order to obtain different effects for each proof, which are thus unique original works.
Born in 1896 in a family of artists, his father Georges was a close friend of Siegfried Bing and a great lover of Japanese art and a bibliophile. He passed his taste for art to his son whom he often took to draw at the Botanic Garden . Around 1910, Gaston Suisse, who hasn't entered yet the artistic school, met Paul Jouve, then 18 years his elder, who was already famous.
In 1911, at the age of 17, he entered the National School of Decorative Art where he followed the teachings of Paul Renouard. Thanks to his knowledge and taste for the Japanese art, he chose lacquer painting as his specialty. His practice of this noble and demanding subject were so much appreciated that he was awarded with two gold medals in 1913 and 1914. Mobilized during the war , he joined the army and go in Salonika where he found his friend Jouve. In 1918, he finished his studies at the School of Applied Arts in order to perfect his training. He learned in particular the techniques of gilding and oxidation of metals. The first productions of Gaston Suisse, furniture and objects in lacquer with geometrical patterns, were an instant success and Suisse was appointed as member of Salon d'Automne in 1924, the very year of his first exhibition. Considered as an artist-decorator, his sincere and deep friendship with Jouve linked him in parallel with the groups of the animaliers of the Jardin des Plantes and became a close friend of Edouard-Marcel Sandoz. When travelling to Maghreb and Middle-East between 1923 and 1925, he produced numerous drawings representing antelopes, apes and fennec foxes...

By Jeff Conroy
Located in Chicago, IL
A small octopus is inked in the Japanese style of Gyo-Taku print making. Using sumi ink to "print" the octopus, the artist then embellishes it with colored pencil to convey an extraordinary dimensionality. By printing it on a nautical chart, the artist achieves a beautiful aesthetic. The artwork is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options.

Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper. It is rumored that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using Gyotaku prints...

Pair of 19th century British equestrian oil paintings
British, 19th Century
Boards: Height 25cm, width 32cm
Frames: Height 35cm, width 42cm, depth 4cm
This attractive pair of 19th-century oil paintings beautifully captures the elegance and charm of Victorian sporting art. Rendered with fine detail and vibrant hues, the paintings are enhanced by their original wooden frames and equal dimensions, making them ideal for display as a complementary set.
Each artwork features a 19th-century racehorse alongside its jockey, portrayed with striking use of colour and a keen eye for character. In the first composition, a chestnut horse is shown being led across an open landscape by a gentleman in stylish rural dress, likely the owner. The jockey, seated confidently atop the animal, wears vivid blue silks. The lower right corner bears a faint signature, and the reverse of the canvas includes indistinct handwritten text, presumably of the horse’s name.
The second painting shows another similarly hued racehorse, this time in profile, with its jockey dressed in bold yellow silks and a burgundy riding cap. The back of this canvas is clearly marked with the name ‘Red Robin’.
Rich in colour and full of period charm, this matched pair of antique equestrian paintings would appeal to collectors of horse racing...

Two visiting Turtle doves perched in a hawthorn bush who have survived their migratory journey to spend the summer in the English countryside. The Turtle Dove is now the UK’s fastest declining breed of bird. Between 1995 and 2004 the number of breeding turtle doves in the UK fell by 93%. This print is featured in a new book called “When Turtle Doves Fly” produced in conjunction with Operation Turtle dove (a branch of the RSPB dedicated to saving Turtle Doves from extinction)

Mango Hummingbirds: An Original 19th C. Audubon Hand-colored Bird Lithograph
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original John James Audubon hand-colored lithograph entitled "Mango Humming bird, 1. 2. Males. 3. Female. Bignonia grandifolia", No. 51, Plate 251 from Audubon's "Birds of America, lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1870-1871. The lithograph depicts an adult male hummingbird, labelled 1, in flight above a beautiful flowering plant, a Chinese Trumpet-vine. Another male, labeled 2, is perched on a flower on the left and a female, labelled 3, is perched on a flower on the right.
This hand-colored Audubon bird octavo-size lithograph sheet measures 10.25" high by 6.75" wide. It is in excellent condition. The original text pages, 185-186, from Audubon's 19th century publication are included.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a naturalist and artist. He was initially unsuccessful financially prior to the publication of his famous work “The Birds of America”, spending time in debtor’s prison, once stabbing a disgruntled investor in self-defense. However, his obsession with birds and art motivated him to persist in his goal of documenting every bird in America via his watercolor paintings and publishing his works for all to enjoy. Audubon's first illustrations were published in a large elephant folio size. Due to their expense they were purchased in rather small numbers by the wealthy. To reach a larger audience, Audubon, with the help of his sons and J. T. Bowen, published a smaller octavo sized lithograph version, which were much more affordable.
With the success of his bird projects, Audubon then turned his attention to four-legged animals. He explored the Missouri River in 1843 sketching the four-legged animals he encountered in their natural setting. His expedition covered some of the same regions recently explored by Lewis and Clark, traveling from present day Alaska to Mexico. Audubon realized that this was an opportunity to document these animals in the still relatively pristine American wilderness, before man encroached on their environment.
Between 1845 and 1848, Audubon and his sons John Woodhouse Audubon...
