The Pilgrimage to the Black Rock, 21st Century, Landscape Photography

The Pilgrimage to the Black Rock, 21st Century, Landscape Photography

By Tao Ruspoli

Located in Morongo Valley, CA

'The Pilgrimage to the Black Rock' (Burning Man) Edition 2/10, 20x30cm, 2016, Color-Print, printed on Velvet Watercolor, 310gsm, Bright White, Acid Free, Signature label and Certificate. About Tao Ruspoli (born 7 November 1975) is an Italian-American filmmaker, photographer, and musician. Background He is the second son of occasional actor and aristocrat Prince Alessandro Ruspoli, 9th Prince of Cerveteri by Austrian-American actress Debra Berger. Tao was born in Bangkok, Thailand and raised in Rome and Los Angeles. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Career Moviemaker magazine singled out Ruspoli as one of the 10 Young Filmmakers To Watch in its spring 2008 issue. His feature narrative debut, Fix, was one of 10 feature films to screen in competition at the 2008 Slamdance Film Festival and soon afterward at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival where Ruspoli was awarded the Heineken Red Star Award for 'most innovative and progressive filmmaker.' Fix also won the Festival Award for Best Film at the 2008 Brooklyn Film Festival, Vail Film Festival and the 2008 Twin Rivers Media Festival, as well as other prizes at several international festivals. His most well-known documentary is Just Say Know, a personal discussion of his family's drug addiction. His other films include Flamenco: A Personal Journey, a feature length documentary about the flamenco way of life as it is lived by Gypsies in the south of Spain. He has directed a number of other short documentaries, including El Cable (also about Flamenco), and This Film Needs No Title: A Portrait of Raymond Smullyan (a portrait of the renowned logician, mathematician and concert pianist Raymond Smullyan). Tao founded LAFCO in 2000. The Los Angeles Filmmakers Cooperative, is a bohemian collective of filmmakers and musicians who work out of a converted school bus. Through LAFCO, Tao has produced several films and helped dozens of filmmakers to make their first films and discover the wonders of digital media. His producing credits include the feature film Camjackers, which he also acted in and co-edited. Camjackers won the best editing award at the 44th Ann Arbor Film Festival. Tao is an accomplished flamenco guitar player, and his first CD, FLAMENCO, was released on Mapleshade Records in 2005. He married actress Olivia Wilde in 2003. They divorced in 2011. He currently lives and works in the High Desert, California. He is the co-founder of the Bombay Beach Biennale. The Exaltation of Imagination Photographs and Musings in Defense of Burning Man by Tao Ruspoli The press around Burning Man had gotten so bad that I almost felt embarrassed to be going this year. Even Daniel Pinchbeck, famed psychonaut and burner par excellence, had written a thoughtful piece explaining why, after 15 consecutive years, he wasn’t going back this year: the festival had changed too much-the rich had taken over, it had gone from a relevant and fascinating social experiment to epitomizing the worst elements of capitalist excess. Besides, he seemed to be saying, the world is going through too many crises, both ecological and humanitarian, to justify the extravagance of an event like this. Keith Spencer...

Original 1946 poster by Paul Colin - “Ils Meurent Pour Vous – Victoire” - WWII

By Paul Colin

Located in PARIS, FR

This powerful original 1946 poster by renowned French graphic artist Paul Colin (1892–1985) was created in the aftermath of World War II for the Organisme National d’Aide aux Combattants under the high presidency of General de Gaulle. Titled “Ils Meurent Pour Vous – Victoire” (They Die For You – Victory), the poster is both a commemoration and a call to solidarity. Rendered in Colin’s bold chiaroscuro style, it depicts a kneeling French soldier silhouetted against the dawn sky, his weapon poised towards the horizon. Behind him lie the faint outlines of fallen comrades, underscoring the poster’s solemn message of sacrifice. The simple yet emotionally charged typography conveys urgent patriotism and post-war gratitude. Paul Colin, one of the greatest poster designers of the Art Deco era, was celebrated for his theatre, cabaret, and political works. Here, his graphic precision and emotional clarity serve a national cause, urging public support for veterans who fought and died for liberation. A deeply evocative historical artefact, this poster resonates today as a reminder of France’s liberation struggle and the human cost of victory. It is ideal for collectors of WWII memorabilia...

Sew What (the swells and swirls of the stripes are now in the hands of others)

By Carol Wax

Located in New Orleans, LA

"Sew What" is a color mezzotint with burin engraving created in an edition of 35. This impression is #6. I love sumptuously designed textiles in both real life and art. Patterns metamorphosing over fabric folds appeal to my interest in modulating rhythmic forms, particularly the swells and swirls of calligraphic stripes. I’m also fascinated by articulated wooden hand models, which appear in many of my paintings. Combining these passions with sewing paraphernalia from my seamstress days provided inspiration for my color mezzotint engraving "Sew What". Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer...

Circa 1950 original poster by French anti-communist organization Paix et Liberté

Located in PARIS, FR

This bold and striking original poster, titled “Articles d’importation…”, was produced around 1950 by the French anti-communist organization Paix et Liberté. It stands as a dramatic artifact of Cold War propaganda, emblematic of the ideological battle waged in post-war Europe between democratic capitalism and Soviet-backed communism. The image features a brown briefcase emblazoned with the Soviet hammer and sickle, ominously opened to reveal a pistol and a set of colorful files labeled with the threats allegedly “imported” by communism: Troubles (Unrest) Sabotages Trahisons (Betrayals) Grèves politiques (Political Strikes) Agressions Rendered in bold color contrasts and menacing tones, the poster sends a clear message: communism, according to its creators, brings only violence, subversion, and political destabilization. The visual language is unmistakably designed to provoke anxiety, portraying the ideology not as a political alternative, but as a foreign-born virus—imported to corrupt national unity and peace. The poster was issued by Paix et Liberté, a French anti-communist propaganda group founded in 1950 by Jean-Paul David with backing from U.S. intelligence and support from various centrist and conservative factions in France. The organization was created at a time when the French Communist Party (PCF) enjoyed considerable popularity, particularly among workers and intellectuals, and when the Soviet Union’s influence loomed heavily over Europe. This work is a powerful example of Cold War visual rhetoric, using graphic design as a weapon in the psychological war against ideological opponents. The hammer and sickle becomes not just a symbol of another worldview, but a mark of treachery—its presence inside a briefcase evoking clandestine operations, infiltration, and national betrayal. Artistically, the poster is clean and direct, designed for mass appeal and clarity, much like other propaganda tools of the era. The use of heavy shadows, fiery red text, and the looming black background all contribute to a sense of covert danger and unease. Today, “Articles d’importation…” serves not only as a historical artifact from the peak of Cold War paranoia but also as a critical piece of political graphic art, reminding us how imagery and language can be mobilized to shape public sentiment, sow division, and influence the tides of democracy. Political - Cold war poster...

"American Marriage" Painted Bronze Outsider Assemblage Sculpture Signed Marmol

Located in Surfside, FL

Jose Marmol "An American Marriage" Hand signed and dated Painted bronze Provenance: Allan Stone Gallery, New York. It came with an inlaid art deco box also signed Marmol. I cannot find any conclusive biography of the artist. Allan Stone (1932–2006) was a legendary American art dealer, collector, and leading authority on Abstract Expressionism. In 1960, he founded the Allan Stone Gallery where he became renowned for his early advocacy of preeminent 20th-century artists. He championed artists such as John Chamberlain, Joseph Cornell, Willem de Kooning, Richard Estes, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Eva Hesse, Franz Kline, Yasuhide Kobashi, Wayne Thiebaud, and Jack Whitten. He was also known for his zealous and eclectic approach to art collecting, amassing a collection that spanned painting, sculpture, assemblage, collage, folk art, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, furniture, mechanical parts, signs, and bugatti cars. At the time of his death, he had the largest collection of African and Oceanic art in private hands. His clientele included Robert Mallary, John Chamberlain, and Elaine de Kooning, During the gallery's first decade Stone showed established luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, César, Franz Kline, John Chamberlain, Barnett Newman, and Alfred Leslie. He gave first or early shows to Arman, Robert Arneson, Richard Estes, Dorothy Grebenak,Eva Hesse, Robert Ryman, Wayne Thiebaud, and Jack Whitten. The Allan Stone Gallery was one of the few that would see artists and their work without an appointment—a vital lifeline for the inexperienced and unconnected. It was also unconventional in its frequent showings of unknown woman artists and artists of color, such as Eva Hesse, Gerald Jackson, Jack Whitten, Elizabeth King, Sue Miller, Sylvia Lark, Kazuko Inoue, Diana Moore, Oliver Lee Jackson, Mary Lovelace O'Neal and Lorraine...
