Saturday Evening Post Cover, April 19, 1952

By Thorton Utz

Located in Fort Washington, PA

Medium: Oil on Board Signature: Signed Lower Left Sight Size 18.50" x 16.75", Framed 24.00" x 22.25" Saturday Evening Post Cover, April 19, 1952 Thornton Utz liked to work out the poses of his figures with rapid, free sketches that clearly expressed the mood or mental attitude of his characters. Once this had been established, he then posed an photographed his models, as nearly as possible, in the predetermined positions. The photos furnished the details of folds and lighting which lent added factuality to his original poses. He used this approach effectively for his humorous Saturday Evening Post covers as well as for the more serious fiction illustrations for Cosmopolitan, McCall’s, The Ladies’ Home Journal, Redbook, and Good Housekeeping. Utz participated in the Society of Illustrators Air Force Art Program and received a citation from General Curtis LeMay for documenting the airlift of Hungarian refugees. Utz also received the Governor Bryant of Florida Award for his freedom posters. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and studied under Burton Callicott in Memphis. He also attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and late taught at the Chicago Art Institute. Utz eventually concentrated on paintings and commissioned portraiture, which included President Carter...

Fernando Natalici Area Nightclub: 1983-1987 (collection of 16 works)

By Fernando Natalici

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Fernando Natalici Area Nightclub 1983-1987: A collection of 16 hand-colored silver gelatin photographs spanning the history of the seminal 1980s New York nightclub known as "Area". These rare images were captured by Fernando Natalici - a noted downtown art scene photographer who is also famous for designing the majority of Area's party invites during this period. These works were exhibited at Area circa 1986 as part of show curated by Serge Becker (featured in image 4) - a key Area figurehead. A much historical & highly decorative assemblage of Area regulars defining the club's historic & vibrant scene. Further details: Medium: A collection of 16 individual hand-colored silver gelatin photographs mounted on illustration board. Overall Dimensions (applies to each individual work): 16x20 inches. Condition: Good overall vintage condition. Some scattered surface markings to margin areas. Each hand-signed on the reverse by Natalici and unique. Provenance: Obtained directly from artist. Literature/References: Area: 1983-1987 by Eric Goode Jennifer Goode (pub. by Abrams 2013). New York Magazine 2013: "It Was the Hottest Club in Town." Area: A brief history (New York Magazine 11/1/13): "Influenced equally by sixties-era happenings and the gonzo childhoods of its proprietors, Area opened its doors in 1983. The club, unlike any that came before it, underwent a painstaking transformation roughly every six weeks, with themes like Confinement, Suburbia, and Science Fiction that incorporated elaborate art installations with taxidermied bears...

Original 'Produits Lavocat' vintage poster for Force and Energy

Located in Spokane, WA

Original vintage poster: Lavocat aliments irradies. Force, Energie par les produits. This is a classic French late Art Deco period poster featuring a buff rugby player almost outpacing a steed - due no doubt to Lavocat, an 'irradiated' food. Even today, the American FDA believes that irradiating food can burn off harmful bacteria, airborne germs, and other microbes which can adversely affect food. We love this poster's depth of color, texture, and oomph - powerful and very, very Art Deco. This poster is an original Art Deco lithograph. This poster is related more to sports and running than food, but food provides energy. Note that the red is cherry red since different monitors produce the red color of this poster in different qualities. Excellent condition, undated on the poster. Behind the rugby runner is a black horse that appears to be neck and neck...

Original Vintage WWII The Sky's the Limit Poster by Courtney Allen 1944

Original Vintage WWII The Sky's the Limit Poster by Courtney Allen 1944

Located in Boca Raton, FL

In America during WWII, every resource was poured into the war effort. With over 12 million Americans - 11% of the total population - serving in the armed forces, everything from food to labor was tight on the Home Front. This poster depicts those who weren't drafted - a young woman and two older men - hard at work on an airplane engine. The text encourages the viewer to pitch in however they can at home, from working in production plants to buying war bonds. The artwork includes a logo for the 6th War Loan, which is of a bomb dropping over the flag of Japan. The 6th War Loan began in November, 1944 with a goal of 16 billion dollars. The previous war bond drives raised in total 355 billion dollars, including 38 billion from individuals. Courtney Allen...

Illuminated Manuscript Painting by the German School
Illuminated Manuscript Painting by the German School

Illuminated Manuscript Painting by the German School

By German School

Located in New Orleans, LA

Extraordinary in its beauty and rarity, this early 16th-century German painting of an illuminated manuscript showcases a masterful trompe l’oeil effect. Unequivocally among the finest of only 17 known works of its kind, the oil on panel is both rare and captivating. With illusory pages that appear to leap from the panel, this virtuosic painting of a hand-colored book suspended into space is exceptional. Created more than four centuries ago, the composition evokes a strong sense of realism. Executed by a masterful Northern Renaissance artist of the German school, the illuminated manuscript pictured shows the astonishing splendor of the historical books of the period. Sumptuously decorated with scrolling floral motifs in the margins, the manuscript appears before a deep black background, heightening the trompe l’oeil illusion of depth through its strong contrast and the naturalistic shadows falling across the fluttering pages. It has been said that of the 17 known versions of this composition, ours stands alone in its precision in both perspective and the play of light and shadow. The visible folios feature choral arrangements and other texts, indicating the pictured manuscript likely served a role in the celebration of church services. In fact, other examples of manuscript paintings...
