By Walter Schnackenberg

Located in Palm Beach, FL

Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East. In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations. His drawings, illustrations, folio prints, and posters are highly sought today for their exceedingly imaginative qualities, enchanting subject matter, and arresting use of color. A View Near Redhill, 19th Century Pen and Ink Drawing by Samuel Palmer

By Samuel Palmer (b.1805)

Located in London, GB

Pen and ink on paper, inscribed 'Redhill' and dated 'June 24th 1872' lower left Image size: 4 x 8 inches (10 x 20 cm) Mounted and Framed Provenance Given to Ernest Pearce by Carlos Peacock, from the collection of Miss Louisa Twining (1820-1911), a pupil of Samuel Palmer. Carlos noted in his letter accompanying the work to Ernest Pearce that 'Going through my Palmer things for mounting the other day. I found this little sketch dating from the Redhill days. Thought you might like it by way of a Christmas gift'. Literature Carlos Peacock, Samuel Palmer , Shoreham and After, published by John Baker 1968, illustrated on page 67. This delicate pen and ink drawing depicts a view at Redhill, a town in the borough of Reigate within the county of Surrey, England. While Palmer's reputation rests mainly on his Shoreham work some of his later work, such as his sketches from Redhill, have recently received more appreciation. In 1872 Palmer was living in Redhill, at his last home, The Chantry at Cronks Hill. The Chantry is now Grade II listed due to the Palmer connection and Palmer Close, a cul-de-sac in Redhill (built in the 1960's), was also named in his honour. This work is an illustration of rural paradise, a vision of the natural world where there is a cosmic harmony between man and his environment. Indeed, Alfred Palmer, the artist's son, wrote 'Had the artist depended for his material solely on the fields, and woods, and hills around him, and had he used that material in a sordid way, he might have given us faithful representations of those he selected, but there would have been inevitable repetition, and he would never have shown us as he has undoubtedly done, the very spirit and quintessence of the loveliest and most poetic pastoral scenery - scenery which we may imagine as that of ancient England...

Christopher Ganz Inverted Kayla 2021 Charcoal and chalk on toned paper 24h x 18w in 60.96h x 45.72w cm CG0076 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Christopher drawings are represented by Ann Nathan Gallery in Chicago, and he shows his prints across the nation. -CV- EDUCATION MFA 2001 Printmaking Indiana University-Bloomington BFA 1995 Drawing and Printmaking University of Missouri-Columbia TEACHING/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 2002-13 Associate Professor, Printmaking and Drawing Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), Fort Wayne, IN 2002 Adjunct Professor: Lithography (instructor of record) Indiana University-Bloomington 1998-00 Associate Instructor: Beginning Drawing (instructor of record) Indiana University-Bloomington 1998 Artist’s Assistant, Assisted Distinguished Professor Emeritus Rudy Pozzatti in the production of an intaglio edition, Bloomington, IN SOLO OR SMALL GROUP EXHIBITIONS 2013 Multiplicities: Drawings and Prints by Christopher Ganz, Franklin College, Franklin, IN Feb. 5 – Feb. 21 2012 Dramatis Personae: Drawings and Prints by Christopher Ganz, University of South Carolina-Columbia, Jan 16. – Feb. 16, 2012 2011 Christopher Ganz; Prints and Drawing Hendrix College, Hendrix, Arkansas, March 5 - 18 2009 Fall Season Exhibition, six drawings displayed Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago. Cat Lithograph by Tsuguharu Foujita, Early 20th Century, Framed

Cat Lithograph by Tsuguharu Foujita, Early 20th Century, Framed

By Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita

Located in New York, NY

Tsuguharu Foujita (also known as Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita) was born in Tokyo, Japan, on November 27, 1886, to an upper-class family. From an early age, Tsuguharu learned French and had ambitions to be a successful artist in Europe. In 1913 he moved to Paris, where he spent the majority of his life and cultivated an artistic circle that included Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Amedeo Modigliani in the creative and bustling Montparnasse district. Tsuguharu Foujita thrived in Paris early on, selling out his debut solo exhibition of 110 pieces on the first day. In Paris, he became known for hosting luxurious parties with his creative friends and models, who served as his muses. The extravagant lifestyle caught up with him when he was faced with a bill he could not pay and had to leave Paris. After a brief return to Tokyo at the start of World War II, Foujita traveled to the United States before eventually moving back to Paris for good. He became a French citizen in 1955 and even converted to Catholicism with the baptismal name of Léonard in 1959. Tsuguharu Foujita’s love of cats was clearly apparent from his vast collection of cat drawings and prints. He loved that they could be both wild and domestic. But it wasn’t just Foujita who had a passion for cats. Cats are a symbol in Japanese art and culture of good luck and fortune. It’s no surprise that Foujita is just one of many Japanese cat portrait artists throughout history. Due in part to the desirability of Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita cat...

Be Mine Valentine, ink and watercolor on archival paper under plexiglass white frame. Keith Carrington’s experiences have led him to express his talents through the fluid & exacting mediums of watercolor and ink. He has honed his skills, clarified his vision, experimented, explored and expanded his expression steadily over the years, the results of which thus far culminate here. Keith’s extensive travels have roots in the luminous quality of his work, eminently holding the unlimited possibilities of beauty and significance. Keith’s most recent paintings combine original comic book renderings that his mother did for Disney et al. and reinterprets them effectively combining the past with present energies and infuses his enthusiasm into these dynamic pieces that you see here today. French Pyrenees Mountain Village Garden House Ink Watercolour Landscape

By Bernard Labbe

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Title: French Pyrenees Mountain Village Garden House Ink Watercolour Landscape Artist: Bernard Labbe, French mid 20th century Medium: Watercolour and ink on paper, laid to mount card, unframed Size: 15.75 x 11.75 inches Signature: Signed and dated lower left Stamped verso: Stamped verso with the artist’s atelier stamp Provenance: The artist’s atelier studio, France, stamped verso Condition: Good vintage condition overall. The work is presented on mount card, with light foxing, age toning and handling marks visible to the outer mount. There is brown tape verso from previous mounting, visible in the photographs. The image itself remains bright, detailed and well presented. Description: A charming original French watercolour and ink landscape by Bernard Labbe, depicting a quiet village garden scene in the Pyrenees Orientales. The verso inscription appears to locate the scene near Mollo in the Pyrenees Orientales, although the exact wording is slightly indistinct. The composition shows a stone terrace, steps, garden wall, gate and small house set among bare winter branches, evergreen trees and mountain village architecture. The subject has strong appeal for collectors of French Pyrenees landscapes, village views, garden paintings, architectural watercolours and original mid century works on paper. The painting is full of lively detail and atmosphere. Labbe combines delicate ink drawing with fresh watercolour washes, using warm ochres, soft blues, greens and browns to describe the textures of stone, foliage and architecture. The foreground path and angular shadows draw the eye into the composition, while the steps, gate and upper garden create a pleasing sense of depth. The balance between precise draughtsmanship and loose painterly colour is particularly attractive, giving the work both structure and spontaneity. Bernard Labbe was based around the Laval and L’Huisserie areas of Mayenne in the Pays de Loire. Many works from this collection bear his atelier stamp and were originally kept within the artist’s studio archive. Labbe exhibited with the Société des Artistes Indépendants from 1951 and was associated with the Centre de Liaison des Artistes Paris from 1982. He also appeared in L’Annuaire National des Beaux Arts from 1970, including French, German and American editions. His exhibitions included Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, New York, Deauville, Aix en Provence, Arles, Avignon and Marseille. This original work reflects Labbe’s interest in regional French architecture, village streets and intimate landscape views. The Pyrenees Orientales connection gives the piece added geographical interest, while the garden wall, house, gate and trees make it especially appealing as a decorative French village scene. Unframed and ready for sympathetic presentation, this is a lovely original French Pyrenees watercolour and ink landscape by Bernard Labbe, ideal for collectors of French village paintings...
