Mary Bradish Titcomb Village Green Signed lower left Oil on canvas 24 x 20 inches A native of Windham, New Hampshire, upon graduation from high school, Titcomb studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, before accepting a position as a drawing teacher in the public schools of Brockton, Massachusetts, where she remained for fourteen years before resigning, in 1889, to study painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her instructors there included Edmund Charles Tarbell, Philip Leslie Hale, and Frank Weston Benson. In the 1890s she went to Paris to study with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and to travel. She then returned to Boston, taking studio space at the Harcourt Studios, where all three of her teachers kept space. In 1895 she became a member of the Copley Society and began exhibiting locally; from 1904 to 1927 she showed work in 29 exhibits at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She began signing her name as "M. Bradish Titcomb" in 1905 to avoid prejudice against her gender. The same year saw her making a sketching trip to the artists' colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut, a center for the American Impressionists; this trip seems to have cemented her interest in the style. In 1915, Titcomb's Portrait of Geraldine J. – the mother of actress Jane Russell – was shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and purchased by President Woodrow Wilson; another portrait, of Frank P. Sibley, was reproduced in the Boston Globe. During this period her work was shown in a traveling exhibition with that of Cecilia Beaux, Lydia Field Emmet, Jean MacLane...

Part of The Nomadic Series. Artist Kristin Llamas spent 13 months traveling and painting in all fifty states. Each painting was inspired by the artist’s personal experiences in that state. From K’s journal… In Cincinnati, Alfonso and I tour the Taft Museum. We like to split up in museums and meet back to talk about our favorite paintings. While walking through the galleries, I realize that we haven’t left each other’s side since the MOCA in Chicago. People always say that the first year with a baby is tough on a marriage, but I wonder what they say about newlyweds living on the road together for a year. I’m convinced that if we can make it through this, we can make it through anything! For now, we do make it to Columbus. We drive through the Brewery District and German Village. Then, we end up at a tucked away place called The Book Loft. Down an uneven brick walkway, the entrance to the Book Loft leads to a thirty-two-room maze of manuscripts. Without exaggeration, one could easily get lost in this labyrinth of literature…of course I do. To help find the exit, there are little stickers and arrows on the floor leading the way out. While we could spend our entire week exploring this bookstore alone, we follow the arrows out and decide to pay homage to Mr. Dave Thomas. I totaled it up and at this point in our trip we have eaten 114 99¢ Wendy’s side salads. The salad is lunch and the container is a paint palette. It only seems fitting to stop and visit the original Wendy’s before leaving Columbia. Every step we take, I scribble another page into my sketchbook and little elements of the state sneak into my composition. We explore the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but when we travel to Kent State, time stands still. I run my hand over the bullet hole that has forever scarred a metal sculpture in the lawn. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder were killed here in the shooting on May 4th 1970 when the National Guard opened fire. Nine students were wounded, with one permanently paralyzed, and several seriously maimed. Today, on the hill where students fled, it is a piece of art which stands as a permanent reminder of that tragic day. The next day is full of lighter journeys as we bounce around to road-side oddities. We walk through a field of cement corn in Dublin, climb a Native American tribute made of stone blocks, and stand in front of an eight story building shaped like a Longaberger basket. As evening closes in, an Amish carriage leads us down the road to Mansfield. We have scheduled to meet with the director of their art center and to our surprise, our arrival feels as if a red carpet has been rolled out for us. We are so used to a humbly appreciating a quick meeting with gallery owners so when The Executive Director of the Mansfield Art Center takes his afternoon off to show us around, you can imagine our surprise. We head with him to the Walnut Lounge for lunch and dive into some fried pickles. I mention the Amish buggies that we’ve seen around and we learn that Ohio currently has the largest Amish population in all of America. Apparently tax breaks on Ohio land has lead to the recent influx of Amish communities from Pennsylvania. That same night, we are invited to attend a Saturday night symphony followed by dinner with some of the director’s friends. As Alfonso plays a few songs around their evening fire, we are asked to present an assembly for the Elementary school and give a talk at an Art Center luncheon. We aren’t difficult to convince, however the cherry on top is that I am given a true studio...

"Cabin on Lake Michigan Shore" is an original oil painting on board by Francesco Spicuzza. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. It depicts a small cabin on the lakeshore surrounded by bright vegetation. 14" x 20" art 22 3/4" x 29" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Leo was a painter of town views, sturdy of trees, landscapes, church interiors, still lifes, marines, interiors, portraits, and some nudes. He acts as a colourist, who practices sobriety. His preference, woodland scenes, a genre in which he has climbed to a solid refinement, particularly specific are the depiction of the tree trunks. His works, brushed concisely and boldly, betray a strong hand that bends the colour ranges to his will and he can adapt to all kinds of subjects. Olaf Wieghorst (1899 - 1988) California, New York, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas Artist Image Size: 20 x 24 Frame Size: 29.5 x 33 Medium: oil "Home Corral" Dated 1946 Biography Olaf Wieghorst (1899 - 1988) Born in Viborg, Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst was a child acrobatic performer from the age of nine when he began appearances at Tivoli Theater in Copenhagen and later toured Europe. He also learned horseback riding working on a stock farm, and horses became a major focus of his admiration and later his painting. In 1918, he arrived in the United States, having worked as a cabin boy on a steamer. He served in the 5th U.S. Cavalry on the Mexican border in the days of Pancho Villa. He later recalled a favorite horse from that period and said that riding through El Paso in 1921, the horse fell on his ankle and broke it. The outfit was heading to Douglas, Arizona, and not wanting to be left behind with his injury, he stayed on the horse which carried him all the way through the New Mexico desert on one of the hottest days of the year. The horse died during the night, having expended all his energy on saving Wieghorst. He later wrote that when the Cavalry discarded the use of horses, "they took the soul out of that great branch of the service" ("Widening Horizons"). He wandered extensively through the West sometimes on horseback, finding work in Arizona and New Mexico as a cowboy. Then he went to New York and served as a mounted policeman until 1944, spending most of his time on a horse named Rhombo patrolling the Central Park bridle paths and saving many people injury from runaway horses. He began painting in his spare time, and he was successful enough that his work was represented by the Grand Central Art Galleries of the Biltmore Hotel. In 1944, he settled in El Cajon, California. His paintings include cowboys, horses, and Indians in landscape, but there is little if any collectible art of his done during his early days in the West. His primary output came after his return to California when he began painting cowboys and horses extensively. He did numerous horse portraits, spending time on ranches studying their unique personalities. He painted celebrity horses including Roy Rogers' Trigger, Gene Autry's Champion and Tom Morgan's stallion. He was a large, powerful, handsome, and very personable man. When he mustered out of the army, he drifted, ending up as a wrangler on the Cunningham Ranch near Alma, New Mexico. By the mid-twenties, Wieghorst was in New York City, working as a mounted policeman - his relationships with the many horses that were a part of his life became the common denominator of his paintings. Living in California by the end of WWII, he began a career that spiraled to success, in part due to his engaging personality. His paintings have appeared in numerous solo & retrospective exhibitions including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City (1974), The Tucson Museum of Art, Arizona (1981), & the San Diego Historical Society, California (2002). Painter, teacher and writer, Philip Leslie Hale is recognized for his decorative paintings of the female figure and for his interior scenes with figures as well as for his progressive approach to painting. However, his career went through several phases that included sporting scenes, figural studies of women including nudes, portraits, and allegorical works reflecting the overwhelming forces of nature. Of the Boston painters of his time, he seemed the most fully committed to Impressionism, and his technique suggests the influence of French impressionist Edgar Degas. In most of his paintings, the landscape was more important than the figure. He was a prolific writer in local newspapers and periodicals about the contemporary art scene, discussing the work of his Boston colleagues. He also wrote numerous books on art and art history including a study of Vermeer that was published in 1913. Among his writings are 1892 newspaper columns for Arcadia Magazine titled "Letters from Paris", art criticism for the Boston Herald from 1905 to 1909; and art criticism for the Boston Evening Transcript. He argued for the Boston School of Art as led by Edmund Tarbell whose style was based on Impressionism with elements of Realism, especially figure painting. Hale was born in Boston in 1865, the son Reverend Edward Hale, a Boston clergyman and a relative of Nathan Hale. He studied with Ellen Day Hale, his sister, and Edmund Tarbell at the Boston Museum School, with J. Alden Weir at the Art Students League in New York City, and then went to Paris for further studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He remained in France for fifteen years, returning to America about 1895. During that time, from 1888, he spent summers at Giverny, France with his good friend, artist, Theodore Butler, and became well acquainted with Claude Monet. Traveling throughout Europe, Hale visited the major museums, and copied the works of Ingres, Vermeer, Watteau and Michelangelo. Hale married Lilian Westcott Hale...
