Paul Shakespear’s minimalist works constantly explore the material properties of paint. This painting is beautifully surfaced. The artist strives to achieve translucence, depth or even a stony surface. The work has no narrative. It has some mark making, but it’s subservient to the tactile quality of the painting’s surface. It’s all about painting as object. He applies close to forty layers of think acrylic glazes that are brushed, troweled and rubbed on. The final layer is often an equisite highly polished surface. The artist compares painting to making music, an activity beyond words, a reaching for the emotional and unconscious world. His work has been exhibited in the U.S., Europe and South America. Dating back to 1935, The Moscow and St. Petersburg Metro was one of the USSR’s most extravagant architectural projects. Under Stalin’s direction, the Architects were directed to introduce the concept of “svet” or light and “sveltloe budushchee” or “A Bright Future”. With their polished marble walls, high vaulted ceilings, and ornate chandeliers, the Metro stations have been likened to an “artificial underground sun”.This underground paradise was to remind its riders that Stalin and his party had delivered something substantial to the people in return for their sacrifices. Burdeny has themed the series around this notion, showcasing his photographs of 20 of the metro stations and various Russian museums, palaces, and theatre interiors. Dominique Teufen was born in Davos Switzerland in 1975. After following a two years stone sculpting class in Zürich, she moved to Amsterdam and received her BA in Sculpture from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2002. In the following years she worked and exhibited in Melbourne, Zürich, London and New York. After moving back to Amsterdam, she attained her Master of Fine Art in 2010 at the Academy for Art and Design St. Joost in S’Hertogenbosch the Netherlands. Since 2011 she lives and works in Zürich and Amsterdam. With Teufen’s education in Sculpture and fine Arts, material-experiments make up an important part of her work. Curious and fascinated by photography, she investigates and engages in differ- ent processes and mechanisms before she takes her photographs. With her specific use of pho- tography, she not only examines the field of tension between two- and three dimensionality, but also explores the area where reality and illusion lose their specific definition and where different possible realities can be visualized. Teufen has participated in various solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including at the Chris- tophe Guye Galerie, Zürich, Kunsthalle Wil/St. Gallen as well as Kunstraum Aarau. Furthermore, Teufen has been exhibited with Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Viviane Sassen, among others at NRW Forum in Düsseldorf, at Museum für Fotografie Berlin and Kunsthalle Darmstadt as part of the group exhibition ‘Bauhaus and Photography’. In connection with the HSBC Photogra- phy Award 2019, she was exhibited in the travelling exhibition of the two winners in Paris, Arles, Bordeaux and Metz. David Saxe - “Photography has always been the simple act of looking and being inspired to strip the unnecessary elements from the scene and frame the image down in a way to discover what is not apparent on the surface. My photographs are as much about me as what I am seeing: In Southern California, 2010 is a perfect example of this process of seeing. When I first noticed this scene, it was a simple mural of a whale on a wall. After looking at it for a while I realized that by eliminating the sky and foreground from the image the whale now had an undulating rhythm and movement. In another image Restaurant Hostess, Palm Beach, FL 2012, I would go to this restaurant every week and sit in the bar behind the reception area. One day, I turned around and saw the back of a woman. Through this process of deductive framing, the image became one of dark shadows rhythmically trickling down her back interwoven with the tattoo of the lizard. David Saxe was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada in 1943 and studied fine art at l’ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal.
