This summer landscape with horses grazing in a paddock under the rays of the sun beside a rural farmstead is a finely executed drawing in brown, signed lower right by Swedish female artist Ester Almqvist (1869-1934). A winding path leads the viewer into the composition, where buildings, fences, and vegetation define a cultivated countryside. Two horses stand quietly within the enclosed field, their forms rendered with spare yet assured lines. Above them, the sun shines from a clear sky, its rays spreading outward in rhythmic, hand-drawn strokes that cover all of the sky. The composition is built through a lively and vibrating pen line, where hatching and linear repetition create both texture and luminosity. The warm sepia tone unifies the scene, while the expressive draughtsmanship conveys a sense of immediacy and presence. The motif is elevated through a distinctly personal interpretation of landscape and light. Ester Dorothea Almqvist was born in 1869 in Bromma, Stockholm and died in 1934 in Lund, south Sweden. She emerged as a significant figure in Swedish art at the turn of the twentieth century, initially associated with the National Romantic movement, before later contributing to the introduction of modernist tendencies in Sweden through a highly individual synthesis of Neo Impressionist and Expressionist elements. Her early life was shaped by a religious and intellectually engaged environment. Almqvist lived her entire life with a physical disability caused by a spinal deformity, which limited her mobility but did not prevent her from pursuing an artistic career. Following her mother’s death, Almqvist broke with her earlier environment and relocated to Skåne, where she would spend the greater part of her professional life. The landscapes of southern Sweden became central to her artistic production and provided the basis for many of her most characteristic works. Her artistic education began at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm (1888–1891), where she received foundational training in drawing and design. She continued her studies through private lessons with the history painter Gustaf Cederström, but chose not to apply to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Instead, she pursued further training at Valand Art School in Gothenburg, where instruction was led by prominent artists such as Carl Larsson and Richard Bergh. She also studied for a period at the Konstnärsförbundet’s school (Artists' Association), under the guidance of Per Hasselberg and Bruno Liljefors...

Biography George Peter Alexander Healy was born in Boston on July 15, 1813, the first of five children of William Healy, an Irish immigrant and captain of a merchant vessel, and his wife Mary Hicks. Healy showed an early artistic interest: by 1830 the self-taught painter had opened a portrait studio from which he hoped to help to support his family. Although commissions were at first sparse, young Healy received important encouragement from Thomas Sully (1783-1872)) who advised him to make painting his profession. His fortunes also improved in 1831 when Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis, a leader in Boston society, granted him permission to paint her portrait and recommended his talents to other potential patrons. In 1834 Healy went to France where he studied with Baron Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835). A year later he traveled through Italy, visiting museums and churches in the company of Lady and Sir Arthur Faulkner who soon provided his introduction to London society. It was in England that Healy met and, in 1839, married Louisa Phipps. The couple settled in Paris where Healy embarked upon the beginning of a long and happy marriage and thriving career. His diplomatic and affable demeanor, together with his obvious skill, brought him tremendous success throughout Europe and the United States. Prolific, as well as talented, he had by 1867 produced more than six hundred portraits. The constant stream of commissions included dignified, imposing portraits of such celebrated figures as Pope Pius IX and Queen Elizabeth of Romania, the latter of whom developed a warm friendship with Healy and his family. Although Healy, sometimes accompanied by his wife, traveled to the United States several times during the 1840s and early 1850s, it was not until 1856 that the entire family settled in America. They took up residence in the booming city of Chicago, which Healy used as a base for his work in Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and other cities. During the Civil War years he often traveled to Washington to paint military figures and members of the President's cabinet. The family returned to Europe in 1867, but George Healy...

About the artist: Zamy Steynovitz was born in Liegnitz, Poland in 1951 and at a very early age he aspired to be a painter. He won first prize in an art competition for children before immigrating to Israel in 1957. Formally educated at the Art School in Tel-Aviv and the Royal Academy in London, he completed his studies and began artistic pursuits in earnest. Zamy established his place in the art world after displaying his work in one-man exhibitions around the world. His art subjects has been strongly influenced by Jewish tradition and folklore. Additionally, his work presents general themes such as Paris cafes, still lives, flowers, circuses and landscapes. In the early stages of his work, he used rich pastels and light brush strokes. When he visited South America in the early 1980’s, his work reflected his new surroundings and were further enhanced by local brightness and colorfulness. His paintings are a reflection of his Eastern-European Jewish heritage, and they are enhanced by a rich choice of warm tones and colors He became known in the circles of the Nobel Institute for Peace in Norway, and consequently was acquainted with many Nobel prize winners, such as Anwar Sadat, Menahem Begin, the Dalai Lama, Itzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias Sanchez, as well as many of the world’s greatest leaders and artists. He tragically passed away in September of 2000. The work of Zamy Steynovitz is held in numerous collections worldwide.
