This is a playful painting that embodies the elements of whimsy and surrealism. The composition features a collection of scallop, spiral seashells and starfish arranged in a glass candy bowl, along with a large conch shell next to it. My research into clownfish inspired me to include fan coral in the painting, as they are known to swim amongst various types of coral. I was surprised to learn that clownfish are only 4-4.5 inches in length. This painting expresses the eternal stillness, beauty and mystery of the island at night. The glittering lights of the villages crest the tops of the island and the reflections of the light shimmer on the dark turquoise waters of the Caldera. Jacobson creates her paintings with many layers of acrylic paint on canvas, giving her work a luminous and translucent quality.
