By Michael Abramson

Located in London, GB

A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...

A Lady in a Garden

A Lady in a Garden

Located in Sheffield, MA

Louis-Emile Adan French, 1839-1937 A Lady in a Garden Oil on board 9 ⅝ by 13 in, w/ frame 14 ⅞ by 18 ⅛ in Signed lower left French painter Louis-Emile Adan was born in Paris. Little is known of his earliest introduction to the visual arts, but he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts, where he initially studied with François-Edouard Picot (1786 – 1866), a successful painter who had himself been part of Jacques-Louis David’s studio, and who was one of the most popular professors at the École. Adan’s work during the 1860s embraced the mainstream tradition of neo-classicism espoused by J.A.D. Ingres (1780-1867). Simultaneously, Adan seems to have taken an interest in painting elegant young women. These images had considerable popular appeal, especially when they featured fashionable clothing in the latest styles. The decade of the 1880s was very busy, both with annual painting submissions to the Salon and with an expanding role as a book illustrator. Toward the end of the decade, Adan’s painting changed significantly. His earlier curiosity about Realist themes took on a new urgency as the artist explored the rigors of rural life. By the middle of the 1880s, Adan was actively engaged in the naturalist movement. Adan’s submissions for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris showcased his naturalist aesthetic. His reputation as a distinguished painter was further recognized in 1892 when he became a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and again in 1900 when he was asked to sit on the jury of both the Salon and the Salon des Artistes Français. Museums: Macon, Agen, Pau, Alençon, Lyon, Mulhouse, Rouen, Nice, Péronne, Nantes, Pfister Art...

Jockey on Racehorse with Well-Dressed Gentleman

Jockey on Racehorse with Well-Dressed Gentleman

By Joseph Christian Leyendecker

Located in Fort Washington, PA

Original advertisement for Kuppenheimer Clothing, featuring a jockey on a race horse and a well-dressed gentleman in a suit This illustration for Kuppenheimer Clothes appeared in various advertisements and promotional materials in 1926 and 1927, such as the cover of a race-themed Kuppenheimer advertising booklet, as well as the interior page of the Kuppenheimer Spring & Summer 1926 brochure, where the associated caption states: “This double-breasted, with slender hips and broad Curvette shoulders, will be quite the thing with stylish young fellows this spring – especially in the new shades of Ambertone and Silvertone.” A wood-engraving of the image was completed by Jacob Sander for use in newspapers in 1926. Engravings like this were often created to eliminate the difficulties associated with half-tone production on the poor quality newspaper stock. The present work showcases the artist’s ability to capture an idealized vision of male beauty. The rich colors and textures of the fabrics applied with Leyendecker’s signature painterly technique further enhance the appeal of the clothing the picture advertises. In the early spring of 1926, in preparation for upcoming Kuppenheimer advertising projects, J.C. Leyendecker visited the Aqueduct Racetrack horse racing facility in Queens, New York. He was directed to the legendary trainer ‘Dick’ (Herbert John Thompson), who was training the horse named Bubbling Over, who would become the model or the horse pictured...

Located in London, GB

"Sexy Scot" by Bob Haswell 28th October 1963: British actor Sean Connery lounges on a sofa with a cigarette. He is in London during filming of the thriller ‘Woman of Straw’ with Gina Lollobrigida. (Photo by Bob Haswell) Sir Sean Connery (born Thomas Connery; 25 August 1930 – 31 October 2020) was a Scottish actor. He was the first actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond on film, starring in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983.[1][2][3] Originating the role in Dr. No, Connery played Bond in six of Eon Productions' entries and made his final appearance in Never Say Never Again. Connery began acting in smaller theatre and television productions until his breakout role as Bond. Although he did not enjoy the off-screen attention the role gave him, the success of the Bond films brought Connery offers from notable directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet and John Huston. Their films in which Connery appeared included Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), Murder on the Orient Express...

A Chinese Company playing Droughts

A Chinese Company playing Droughts

Located in Amsterdam, NL

ERWIN BINDEWALD (1897-1950) Two men playing draughts, a girl with the red book standing behind them Signed and dated E. Bindewald d.j., 27 Oil on canvas, 140.5 x 90.5 cm In black and gilt gesso frame. Note: Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China. In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing. The man on the left in the modern Western suit...
