Ginger Jar Lamps For Sale on 1stDibs
An assortment of ginger jar lamps is available at 1stDibs. Frequently made of ceramic, metal and porcelain, all ginger jar lamps available were constructed with great care. We have 674 antique and vintage ginger jar lamps in-stock, while there are 27 modern editions to choose from as well. There are all kinds of ginger jar lamps available, from those produced as long ago as the 18th Century to those made as recently as the 21st Century. Hollywood Regency, mid-century modern and modern ginger jar lamps are consistently popular styles. If space is limited, there are small ginger jar lamps measuring 3 inches across. There have been many well-made ginger jar lamps over the years, but those made by Frederick Cooper, Chapman Manufacturing Company and The Marbro Lamp Company are often thought to be among the most beautiful.
How Much are Ginger Jar Lamps?
Prices for ginger jar lamps can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, ginger jar lamps begin at $75 and can go as high as $14,950, while the average can fetch as much as $1,500.
Finding the Right Table Lamps for You
Antique table lamps became a category of their own once electricity moved light off the wall and onto furniture. The form split quickly: task-driven designs like the Anglepoise on one side, decorative ceramic and glass on the other.
Styles to Know
Base material shapes the light as much as the shade does: ceramic and glass diffuse a softer glow, while brass and metal read more directional. Layer the look with a mid-century modern floor lamp for ambient light, or set a pair on a mid-century modern nightstand for a bedroom.
How to Choose the Right Vintage Table Lamp
Buying individually rather than as a pair allows more flexibility when mixing eras across a room. For those shopping by name rather than by shape, the history of the Anglepoise lamp is worth a read. Each piece comes from a vetted 1stDibs seller, with era, designer and condition detailed, and the 1stDibs Promise stands behind every purchase.

What is a ginger jar lamp?
1 Answer1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021A ginger jar lamp pairs a lovely lampshade with an ornate Chinese spice jar to create a visually appealing lamp. The lampshades can be neutral or colorful to create a beautiful effect. Find a collection of antique and vintage table lamps on 1stDibs.What are ginger jars?
1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Ginger jars are blue and white patterned jars that were once used for transporting spices in Ancient China. Today, they serve decorative purposes in homes. Why is it called a ginger jar?
1 Answer
PAGODA REDOctober 7, 2020With a similar shape to the baluster jar, Chinese porcelain ginger jars have a rounded form, with broad shoulders tapering to the base and a narrowed neck topped by a domed lid. The unusual name comes from the export market, wherein salt and spices such as ground ginger travelled West in lidded storage vessels.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022The original purpose of a ginger jar was to transport herbs and spices. It was European traders who gave the highly decorative containers their name. Today, people use ginger jars as decorations. Find a selection of ginger jars on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A ginger jar is a typically round jar that widens toward the top, or ‘shoulders’ of the jar. The narrower mouth is topped by a smooth domed lid. A temple jar features a handle or knob on the top of the lid. The jar itself is more curved as well. On 1stDibs, find a selection of ginger jars and temple jars.
Lotus GallerySeptember 23, 2020Chinese ginger jars were originally made as utilitarian vessels used to store various herbs and spices. Today, they are almost exclusively decorative objects.
- Lotus GallerySeptember 23, 2020
Chinese ginger jars are defined by their round, compact shape, wide mouth, short neck, and fitted cover.
- Lotus GallerySeptember 23, 2020
A Chinese ginger jar should be fairly compact in size, with a rounded, globular or ovoid body, high shoulders, a wide circular mouth, short neck, and a fitted cover.
