The Harvest Season (Louisiana Sugar Mill Series - New Iberia, Louisiana)

By David Armentor

Located in New Orleans, LA

David Armentor says, "The Sugar Mill Sessions focuses on sugar production in Southwest Louisiana. It attempts to give a localized, romantic view of the industry by documenting harvest seasons of the sugar mills, Cajun Co-op, Louisiana Sugar Cane Co-op and Enterprise. With the sugar industry as a passive backdrop to my upbringing, it was natural for me use its distinctive characteristics as indicators of "home" even after relocating as an adult. Originally, this work began in 2004 with the intention of capturing these traits in a purely formal documentary fashion, following the discipline of "photograph what you know." I worked mostly at night during the harvesting season months of September through January, which gave way to a more expressive capture of the industry. This direction allowed me to give a unique perspective to an industry where sense of place is often viewed as burdensome or vexatious. Unique lighting conditions along with modernistic compositions allow the images more gentle, hushed qualities while remaining grounded in the innate industrial masculinity -- something easily overlooked by those familiar with the landscape. 'The Sugar Mill Sessions' is an ongoing body of work which has evolved going forward. Historically great artists have explored this complex industry that is ingrained in the Southern culture as it has a continual ability to serve as an umbrella for flavorful artistic expression, critique and research." Gulf coast native David Armentor is an artist who has been working in the photographic medium since 2002. He received a BA from Louisiana State University where he learned the craft of traditional photographic print making. After graduation he taught photography classes for the Baton Rouge Arts Council and worked as a freelance photographer until moving to Seattle, WA, where he continued his photographic endeavors with the Benham Gallery as the gallery manager and guest artist. He now resides in New Orleans, LA, and is the founder of St Veronica...

Tres Cuentos

By Victoria Montoro Zamorano

Located in New Orleans, LA

For Victoria Montoro Zamorano, the art of seeing consists not in actively looking for the striking or unusual, but in being ever open and receptive to see the world with new eyes. This unguarded, spontaneous approach gives her images a quality of abstract realism that turns undulating sand dunes into a woman’s prone body, and equally captures the emotional content of a crumbling façade or an old woman’s face. An avid world traveler. Cuban born Zamorano has a special sensibility for people and places off the beaten path. Having no preconceived notions of what a photograph should be, Zamorano’s instinctual approach has led her to the poignant remains of the Jewish synagogues...

Staircase and Classical Sculpture, Rome, Gelatin Silver Print, Signed, 24x20

By Leonard Freed

Located in New york, NY

A gelatin silver estate print, 24" x 20" from the Freed archive, Rome, Italy, 2000 by Leonard Freed is a black and white contemporary photograph focused on the unexpected - a poetic and beautiful sighting - a classical sculpture in the stairwell of a modest Roman dwelling. The 24 x 20in photograph is stamped and signed on verso (back of photo) by Brigitte Freed, wife of the photographer. The photographer made numerous trips to Italy, especially to Rome and Naples, capturing everyday life, love, sadness, joy of family gatherings, food and leisure. Freed's photographs ultimately reflect the “Italian spirit,” the art of enjoying the moment, the culture, lifestyle, and beauty of a Latin country. In the US, Leonard Freed documented Little Italy in...

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs. Camps on Lake Pontchartrain (very rare!)

Located in New Orleans, LA

If you know photography, you'll know E. J. Bellocq is most famous for his photos of the prostitutes of Storyville in New Orleans, which (as Wikipedia mentions) have been "the inspiration for novels, poems and films." His character actually appears in the film "Pretty Baby," played by Keith Carradine. His photos first exploded into recognition when they were shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At any rate, this print is exceedingly rare - the only one I personally have seen in all my time at auctions and galleries in New Orleans- of the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in 1908. Bellocq's prostitute photos are not to everyone's taste, but this exquisite photo will charm anyone who is a fan of New Orleans, or lives on the North Shore (Mandeville, Covington), or is just into rare photography...

Lying in Water (Erotic nude male lies on beach as surf rushes around his body)

By Dianora Niccolini

Located in New Orleans, LA

A nude male lies on his back in the shallow surf in this vintage silver gelatin print by Dianora Niccolini. It was created in 1996 and is pencil signed on the back by the artist. Niccolini was a pioneer as a woman photographer who used the nude male figure as her subject matter. She depicted the nude black male as art long before Robert Mapplethorpe. Dianora Niccolini was born in Florence, Italy, to an American mother and a father from an old Florentine family. She lived in Florence throughout the second world war, and at the age of almost nine years old, she came to the United States. When she turned 18, she left home and went to New York City to study art. She met a group of dancers and her passion, in her late teens and early twenties, was ballet. After she met Weegee in 1963, she took up photography and since then her professional career and focus have been photography. In 1973, she began to create photographic bodies of work which resulted in exhibits. Her first photographic exhibit was in 1974. It was a serious study of the female nude. Her second exhibit was in 1975. It was a study of the male nude which was favorably reviewed by Gene Thornton in The Sunday New York Times of December 7, 1975. One of her first male models was an African-American body builder. His photographs have been included in many photographic anthologies and were also widely exhibited in the mid seventies and pre dated Mapplethorpe's images of body builders by several years. Dianora Niccolini's male nude images have definitely influenced many photographers. She is considered to be one of the female pioneers of the male nude in...
