Ted Kincaid
Moon ( from the artist's Lunar Series)

2010

About the Item

An image from Kincaid lunar series. An edition of 10 Over the course of three decades, Ted Kincaid has systematically subverted the notion of an objective photographic record and examined the play between painting and photography. Kincaid has created multiple series of works that explore the discourse between a totally manufactured image that appears to be a straightforward photograph and an actual photograph that has been altered so fantastically that the viewer would assume it is a painting. To put it simply, his paintings are informed by photography and his photographs are influenced by painting. Kincaid is an explorer of art-making processes, archaic and modern. He pivots seamlessly between historical photographic media, to hand drawing, to ceramic murals, to printmaking and to digital processes. He voraciously pulls subject matter from every corner of his observations – poetry, politics, death, sexuality, dark humor, climate change and the destructive power of nature are all woven into his imagery. Kincaid has become one of the most recognized and respected artists from North Texas. He has been reviewed in ARTFORUM and is included in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, L’Associazione Fotografica Imago, Arezzo, Italy, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts in San Antonio, The Columbus Museum, and the Georgia Museum of Art where Kincaid had his first solo museum exhibition in 2018.

  • SMOKE STACKS, CAJUN MILL
    By David Armentor
    Located in New Orleans, LA
David Armentor says, "The Sugar Mill Sessions focuses on sugar production in Southwest Louisiana. It attempts to give a localized, romantic view of the industry by documenting harvest seasons of the sugar mills, Cajun Co-op, Louisiana Sugar Cane Co-op and Enterprise. With the sugar industry as a passive backdrop to my upbringing, it was natural for me use its distinctive characteristics as indicators of "home" even after relocating as an adult. Originally, this work began in 2004 with the intention of capturing these traits in a purely formal documentary fashion, following the discipline of "photograph what you know." I worked mostly at night during the harvesting season months of September through January, which gave way to a more expressive capture of the industry. This direction allowed me to give a unique perspective to an industry where sense of place is often viewed as burdensome or vexatious. Unique lighting conditions along with modernistic compositions allow the images more gentle, hushed qualities while remaining grounded in the innate industrial masculinity -- something easily overlooked by those familiar with the landscape. 'The Sugar Mill Sessions' is an ongoing body of work which has evolved going forward. Historically great artists have explored this complex industry that is ingrained in the Southern culture as it has a continual ability to serve as an umbrella for flavorful artistic expression, critique and research." Gulf coast native David Armentor is an artist who has been working in the photographic medium since 2002. He received a BA from Louisiana State University where he learned the craft of traditional photographic print making. After graduation he taught photography classes for the Baton Rouge Arts Council and worked as a freelance photographer until moving to Seattle, WA, where he continued his photographic endeavors with the Benham Gallery as the gallery manager and guest artist. He now resides in New Orleans, LA, and is the founder of St Veronica...

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs.
