This stately, ancient tree is native to the Southeast. Its large fragrant blossoms and dark, shiny leaves adorn the green lawns and line the streets of the small towns where I am from. So, when I moved to California, I was pleasantly surprised to see this icon from the South growing freely here as well! This paining, with its representatives from the Southeast (the Magnolia and Blue Jay) and the West (the Plums and Persimmons) shows how roots can expand and grow to embrace new beginnings.” — Mary Kay West...

Fallen Leaf Lake; Lake Tahoe Region, c. 1916
By Lorenzo Palmer Latimer
Located in Pasadena, CA
Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; From a private collector, Encino, California, by descent; Acquired in 1997 by a private collector, Palo Alto, California; From Sean's Antiques, San Francisco, California. Signed "L.P. Latimer" on lower right Description This intimate watercolor captures Fallen Leaf Lake, a serene alpine lake in El Dorado County, California, situated just south of Lake Tahoe—an area celebrated each autumn for the Kokanee Salmon trail runs. Latimer invites the viewer onto a rocky slope, framed by stately evergreens, guiding the gaze across the lake’s glassy blue surface toward the snow-capped Sierra Nevada peaks beyond. His delicate washes and masterful color transitions—pale rose and gold in the drifting clouds, soft greens in the foliage, and muted blue-grays in the distant mountains—reflect his refined command of the watercolor medium. The composition conveys the quietude of early morning or late afternoon light in the high country, capturing a timeless sense of place that has long inspired artists of the Lake Tahoe region. Historical Significance Lorenzo Palmer Latimer (1857–1941) was a foundational figure in early 20th-century California plein air painting, especially known for his evocative watercolors of Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada, and Northern California landscapes. He taught at the San Francisco Mechanics’ Institute and later founded the Latimer Art Club in Reno (1921), shaping an entire generation of regional artists. His deep connection to Fallen Leaf Lake is well-documented—he first painted there in 1914 and led annual summer workshops at the site, drawn by its pristine beauty and the opportunity to work directly from nature. Today, Latimer’s mastery is celebrated in the beautifully illustrated book The Latimer School: Lorenzo Latimer...

Dunes on California Coast, c 1930s
By Carl Sammons
Located in Pasadena, CA
Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired in 1998 by a private collector, San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Oceanside, California; From the Santa Barbara Historical Society Signed "Carl Sammons" on lower right Description This luminous coastal landscape by Carl Sammons is a striking example of the artist’s signature plein air style, depicting the rolling coastal dunes and lush vegetation of California’s shoreline. Best known for his depictions of Carmel and Monterey, the composition and palette of this work suggest inspiration from the Monterey Peninsula dunes. Sammons’ ability to merge vibrant, clean color with a sense of atmospheric perspective is evident here in the interplay of bright, sunlit sands and the rich greens of windswept foliage. His vibrant yet naturalistic color harmonies, crisp edges, and keen sensitivity to light bring the fleeting beauty of the coastal environment to life. The hazy eucalyptus grove in the background adds a distinctive regional touch, situating the composition firmly within California’s coastal identity. Sammons’ paintings of California’s unique landscapes played a significant role in documenting the natural beauty of the state during the early 20th century. Connection to the Monterey Art Colony By the 1920s and 1930s, Sammons became closely associated with the Monterey art colony, an influential hub for plein air painters such as Armin Hansen (1886–1957), William Ritschel (1864–1949), and Percy Gray...

California Lupines and Poppies, c. 1930
By Angel De Service Espoy
Located in Pasadena, CA
Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired in 1997 by a private collector, Palo Alto and Oceanside, California; From Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts, Inc., Laguna Beach, California. Signed "A. Espoy" on lower left Description In California Lupines and Poppies, Angel De Service Espoy captures the vibrant splendor of California’s springtime wildflowers with lyrical brushwork and atmospheric sensitivity. A hillside awash in blooming blue lupines and golden poppies slopes gently toward a distant view of rolling hills beneath a soft, clouded sky. Espoy’s confident handling of color and texture brings the landscape to life, evoking the fleeting beauty of the state’s native flora and the delicate transitions of light across the land. This intimate composition reflects the artist’s deep affection for California’s rural countryside and his enduring legacy as a painter of its most poetic vistas. Based on the painting’s style, subject matter, and scale, California Lupines and Poppies was most likely created between 1925 and 1940—a period when Espoy was actively painting California’s coastal and inland landscapes, particularly in the Monterey Peninsula and Carmel Highlands regions. The composition, with its gently rolling hills, distant haze, and vivid display of native wildflowers, closely aligns with Espoy’s known plein air works of the Central Coast. The loose yet confident brushwork, naturalistic light, and spontaneous floral groupings all support the likelihood that this piece was painted en plein air. Espoy often created small-format oils like this one outdoors as finished works in their own right or as preparatory studies for larger studio paintings. His style blends Realism and Impressionism, drawing upon the influences of his training under Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) and the French Barbizon School, resulting in works that balance truthful representation with a painterly, light-filled immediacy. Historical Significance Born in Spain and trained in Barcelona, Angel Espoy immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century, eventually settling in California, where he became known for his floral landscapes, maritime scenes, and depictions of the Pacific coastline. Espoy’s lupine and poppy paintings are among his most beloved subjects, reflecting the natural beauty of the state and the influence of California Impressionism. In the 1920s–1930s, Espoy’s work gained popularity among collectors who sought colorful, uplifting views of the West, particularly during the Depression era. His florals not only document California’s seasonal splendor but also contribute to the legacy of artists who elevated regional wildflowers to a fine art subject—following in the tradition of Granville Redmond, William Wendt, and Guy Rose. Today, Espoy’s flower-filled landscapes remain a favorite among collectors of early California art...

Night Burger; Genre painting of a fast food worker looking out to a quiet beach
By Tony Peters
Located in Pasadena, CA
Artist Statement: "Over a decade ago, before this Fatburger location in Sherman Oaks was renovated, I was admiring the evening neon light bouncing off of these chrome stools. I had even started to paint the entire parking lot full of cars across the street, but decided that the mood of the piece would be enhanced if I changed it to a seaside location, making this piece more of a fiction. Story often draws me into a painting, and I felt the exaggerated aloneness was more connected to the feelings of inspiration I found in this place." -- Tony Peters Artwork Description: Night Burger by Tony Peters is a breathtaking oil on canvas painting that captures a considered and tranquil atmosphere with striking detail. This oil on canvas piece depicts a solitary fast food worker, standing alone inside an illuminated burger stand and gazing out into the night sky towards a distant beach with crashing waves. The painting's warm and vibrant colors bring to life the peaceful and serene mood of the scene. The figure in the painting wears an orange uniform and grey cap, with no customers present, creating a sense of solitude and introspection. The neon lights that illuminate the burger stand enhance the painting's warm and calming ambiance, reflecting the worker's silent reflection. The harmony between the worker's outfit and the neon lights creates a subtle yet cohesive effect, adding to the painting's overall beauty. Night Burger by Tony Peters inspires rumination and contemplation. Its minimalist presentation adds a contemporary touch to the piece, making it a perfect addition to any modern or traditional setting. This painting captures the beauty of the mundane and celebrates the peace that can be found in solitude. "The Bridge over the Seine Near Argenteuil" Oil Reproduction after Claude Monet
By (after) Claude Monet
Located in Pasadena, CA
This framed reproduction of Claude Monet's immensely popular painting, “The Bridge Over The Seine Near Argenteuil,” comes with a certificate of authenticity on the back and is numbered 1102, making it interesting for several reasons. The artagraphic process used to produce this work in a limited edition of 2900 is considered the state-of-the-art in art reproduction and the most respectful approach to reproducing a painting by a master. In three steps, this technique creates a 3D replica of an original oil painting's color and surface texture. Colors are scanned with a digital laser and then printed separately using oil-based inks on a single sheet. A mold is created from the original painting to reproduce its surface texture and bas-relief brushstrokes. Unlike lithographs and serigraphs, there is a palpable material and relief if you run your fingers over the surface. At the Impressionist group's first exhibition in 1874, Claude Monet demonstrated his deep interest in the motif by working on seven depictions of the Argenteuil bridge and four of the railroad bridge upstream. The artwork depicts Monet's immediate impressions of the scene rather than offering detailed realism. In these series, moored sailboats occupy the foreground, while the fluidity of the river melts harmoniously with the geometrically contrasted presence of the bridge and its imposing pillars. Monet manipulates his palette and complementary color schemes to create the illusion of light and movement through small, separate, and visible brushstrokes, making it one of the artist's most recognizable signatures. The painting displays a diversity of styles, with some elements more solid, having strong and distinct lines and structured forms defined by firm contours, while the water and the sky in the background give off an impression of moving space, floating, and ripples. An original painting of the series can be seen at Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France...

Bodega Bay, c 1906
By Jessie Arms Botke
Located in Pasadena, CA
Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired in 1998 by a private collector, San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Oceanside, California; From William A. Karges Fine Art, Carmel, California Signed "Jesse Arms Botke" on lower right Description This charming watercolor captures a sweeping view of Bodega Bay, California, rendered with the refined draftsmanship and decorative sensibility for which Jessie Arms Botke is renowned. While best known for her gilded avian compositions, Botke’s landscapes are comparatively rare and reveal a more personal side of her artistic vision. Here, the viewer peers over the distinctive red turret of a Victorian home toward the curving estuary, where land meets sea beneath a soft blue sky. Delicate washes and crisp detailing convey the texture of the shoreline, the undulating water, and the surrounding structures, evoking the calm yet lively spirit of a coastal fishing village in the early 20th century. The warm terracotta tones of the foreground architecture contrast beautifully with the cool blues of the water and the distant hills, creating a balanced, harmonious scene. Although no journal entry or record confirms a specific trip to Bodega Bay, Botke may have painted this work, circa 1906, during the period when she was offered a round-trip passage from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to travel from Chicago to Arizona and California in exchange for paintings depicting scenes of the West. The style and vantage point suggest direct observation, making it likely that she visited the town and painted the scene en plein air. With its architectural detail, vibrant palette, and compositional harmony, this work stands as a significant example of Botke’s lesser seen yet highly collectible works on paper. Jessie Arms Botke is recognized as one of the most important women artists in the early California art...
