Sunset at Öresund, 19th Century Oil on Canvas, Original Gilt Frame

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

Sunset at Öresund with Kronborg Castle, late 19th century Danish school, oil on canvas. Original gilt wood frame. The present small format painting depicts Öresund at dusk, viewed from the Danish coast, with Kronborg Castle visible across the water in the middle distance. The castle is shown in a subdued atmospheric light, its towers and buildings softly defined against the pale evening sky. Several sailing boats are visible on the Sound, while in the foreground a small wooden boat has been hauled up onto the sandy shore. Rocks, posts and traces of seaweed provide additional detail along the water's edge. The work, most likely from the end of the 19th century, is executed on an unusually small canvas for a finished coastal view of this type. The intimate format, measuring only 18 × 14 cm, suggests that it may have been painted as a small personal memento, study, or gift, rather than as a formal exhibition work. The restrained palette of pale blue, ochre, grey and warm yellow is particularly effective in conveying the evening light. The distant architecture is handled with a light and economical touch, while the foreground boat and shoreline are painted with more defined brushwork. Despite its modest dimensions, the artist has created a convincing sense of recession from the beach across the water towards Kronborg. Kronborg and the surrounding coastline of northern Zealand were important subjects for Danish artists throughout the 19th century. The area around Helsingør, Kronborg and Øresund attracted painters from the Danish Golden Age onwards, while the coast and fishing communities continued to provide subjects for later 19th-century artists. Marine painting was an established speciality within Danish art, with artists such as Carl Dahl, Carl Frederik Sørensen...

Illustrerad Familjetidskrift, first year, 1895–1896, issue 26, pp. 416–417, reproduced across the centre spread. The contemporary caption reads: “Bild från Tenerife: Lavaklippstrand. Efter en oljemålning för ‘För Sv. Hem’ af Carl Johansson.” Condition report: Please contact the gallery for a detailed condition report. Essay: Painted during Carl Johansson’s journey to Tenerife in 1894, Lavaklippstrand presents the volcanic Atlantic coastline as an austere study of rock, water and light. Jagged formations of dark lava dominate the foreground and middle distance, breaking the surface of the sea in an irregular progression towards the horizon. Behind them, the coast dissolves gradually into mist, while the almost colourless sky occupies the upper half of the composition. The painting is unusually restrained for a landscape executed during a period when Johansson had recently encountered the brighter palette of modern French painting. Here, instead, he deliberately reduces the scene to a near monochrome range of blacks, greys, browns and white. Johansson was born in Härnösand in 1863 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1882 and 1885, where his teachers included Edvard Perséus and the landscape painter Per Daniel Holm. He belonged to the generation of Swedish artists that increasingly looked beyond academic landscape conventions during the 1880s and 1890s. A period in France in 1891 and 1892 brought him into closer contact with contemporary French landscape painting...

1918 Norwegian Evening Seascape after Amaldus Nielsen

Located in Stockholm, SE

After Amaldus Nielsen (1838–1932) Norway Evening at Fredrikstad, 1918 signed indistinctly, possibly “Hj. U…”, and dated “18” lower right oil on board unframed 42 × 55 cm (16.5 × 21.7 in) framed 53 × 65 cm (20.9 × 25.6 in) Comparative work: Amaldus Nielsen, Aften ved Fredrikstad (Evening at Fredrikstad), 1909, oil on canvas, present location unknown. Condition report: Very good condition with bright and clear colors. Ready to hang. Please contact the gallery for a detailed condition report. Essay: This atmospheric evening seascape was painted in 1918 by an as yet unidentified artist and closely follows Amaldus Nielsen’s Aften ved Fredrikstad of 1909. The relationship between the two compositions is unmistakable. In both, a sailing boat occupies the central waters beneath an expansive and dramatically clouded sky, while a narrow strip of intense evening light separates sea from horizon. Smaller vessels recede into the distance, establishing both scale and a sense of stillness across the broad surface of the water. The present painting is nevertheless not a mechanical copy. The unidentified artist has altered several details and developed the scene through a more concentrated and chromatically intense palette. The central vessel is brought into sharper prominence, its sails forming a strong silhouette against the illuminated horizon. Deep blues dominate the foreground water and the upper sky, while streaks of orange, ochre and pale turquoise register the last light of sunset. The sky occupies approximately two thirds of the composition and becomes almost a subject in itself. Heavy clouds gather above the tranquil water, their dark masses opening intermittently to reveal passages of luminous blue and warm reflected light. The model for the composition was created by Amaldus Nielsen, one of the most important Norwegian painters of the coast during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born at Halse near Mandal in 1838, Nielsen studied in Copenhagen before continuing his training with Hans Gude at the Düsseldorf Academy. Gude’s emphasis on close observation of landscape remained fundamental to Nielsen, but he gradually moved away from the constructed romantic landscape towards an increasingly direct study of nature. Nielsen became especially associated with the coastlines of southern and western Norway and has often been described as one of Norway’s earliest naturalist landscape painters. From the 1860s onward he frequently completed paintings outdoors before the motif, an unusually direct working method in Norwegian art of the period. Light, weather and changing atmospheric conditions became central to his practice. The same location might be returned to repeatedly under different conditions of morning, evening, mist or changing weather. Fredrikstad and its surrounding archipelago formed part of this geography. Nielsen is documented working at Arisholmen near Fredrikstad as early as 1884, and surviving paintings demonstrate his continued interest in the coastal landscape of Østfold. By the time he painted Aften ved Fredrikstad in 1909, the theme of boats at rest or moving quietly across evening water had become deeply embedded within his art. The 1909 painting...

Summer Landscape with Farmhouse and Horses, Impressionist Drawing
Summer Landscape with Farmhouse and Horses, Impressionist Drawing

Summer Landscape with Farmhouse and Horses, Impressionist Drawing

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

This summer landscape with horses grazing in a paddock under the rays of the sun beside a rural farmstead is a finely executed drawing in brown, signed lower right by Swedish female artist Ester Almqvist (1869-1934). A winding path leads the viewer into the composition, where buildings, fences, and vegetation define a cultivated countryside. Two horses stand quietly within the enclosed field, their forms rendered with spare yet assured lines. Above them, the sun shines from a clear sky, its rays spreading outward in rhythmic, hand-drawn strokes that cover all of the sky. The composition is built through a lively and vibrating pen line, where hatching and linear repetition create both texture and luminosity. The warm sepia tone unifies the scene, while the expressive draughtsmanship conveys a sense of immediacy and presence. The motif is elevated through a distinctly personal interpretation of landscape and light. Ester Dorothea Almqvist was born in 1869 in Bromma, Stockholm and died in 1934 in Lund, south Sweden. She emerged as a significant figure in Swedish art at the turn of the twentieth century, initially associated with the National Romantic movement, before later contributing to the introduction of modernist tendencies in Sweden through a highly individual synthesis of Neo Impressionist and Expressionist elements. Her early life was shaped by a religious and intellectually engaged environment. Almqvist lived her entire life with a physical disability caused by a spinal deformity, which limited her mobility but did not prevent her from pursuing an artistic career. Following her mother’s death, Almqvist broke with her earlier environment and relocated to Skåne, where she would spend the greater part of her professional life. The landscapes of southern Sweden became central to her artistic production and provided the basis for many of her most characteristic works. Her artistic education began at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm (1888–1891), where she received foundational training in drawing and design. She continued her studies through private lessons with the history painter Gustaf Cederström, but chose not to apply to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Instead, she pursued further training at Valand Art School in Gothenburg, where instruction was led by prominent artists such as Carl Larsson and Richard Bergh. She also studied for a period at the Konstnärsförbundet’s school (Artists' Association), under the guidance of Per Hasselberg and Bruno Liljefors...

Interior with a Young Woman Making a Hat, 19th Century Signed Watercolor.

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

The hat-maker or the milliner is depicting a kitchen interior with a young woman making a straw hat with ribbon and flowers. Watercolor, late 19th century, signed "Carlton A Smith". Dressed in a pale blouse, green apron and deep crimson skirt, she carefully threads a bright green ribbon through a broad straw hat adorned with poppy flowers. At her feet stands an open workbox overflowing with fabrics, ribbons and millinery materials, while baskets and worktables in the softly shadowed background reinforce the impression of a busy artisan's studio. Warm daylight entering from the side illuminates the figure and her work, creating a pleasing contrast between the richly colored foreground and the subdued interior. Executed with delicacy, the watercolor demonstrates Carlton Alfred Smith...
