He was born in Sacramento on January 19, 1958, and grew up in Placerville, a city in El Dorado County. For his post-secondary education, Kinkade chose the University of California, Berkeley, and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. During the 1980s, he began selling his paintings at galleries all across the state. Kinkade died in Monte Sereno, California, on April 6, 2012, at the age of 54.
