Adam Cohen Art

American, b. 1959
Adam Cohen is a New York based abstract artist whose work combines color and texture to endow the canvas with dream-like intensity; with lush, intricate layers of pigment, he creates paintings alive with gestural energy. Born in the United States in 1959, Cohen started painting at the age of 12, studying with Lilian Marzell, a respected teacher, artist and friend of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and other key figures of the Abstract Expressionist generation, who later became a huge influence on Cohen’s work. He went on to study at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, which included a year living and painting in Rome. Upon graduation, Cohen moved to New York City, where he studied at the School of Visual Arts while taking classes at the Art Students League and Parsons School of Design. Ahead of his time, he was one of the first artists to use computers and Photoshop in a creative context, which helped launch his career as a top illustrator, working for the likes of Disney, Coca Cola, Visa and the New York Times, amongst many others. After a 10-year break, Cohen returned to painting and moved from New York City to the Catskills, specializing in figurative work, which ultimatley led to his discovery and love of abstract painting. In 2012 Adam started applying pigment in wide, vigorous strokes, creating intricate colorful abstract tapestries with sharp contrasts of black and white. The textures of his paintings have changed over the years as black has almost disappeared. He now cuts the still-wet paint with a palette knife and other instruments to create intricate, almost vascular patterns. The results of these developments are paradoxical, for Cohen’s imagery is now more vibrantly physical than ever and, at the same time, more richly atmospheric. Now firmly established as an abstract painter, Cohen has exhibited extensively in the US, Europe and Asia, most recently at the Morren Gallery in Amsterdam and the Galleria Ravagnon in Venice.

Zen Garden - bright, floral, impasto, abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvas
By Adam Cohen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Rendered in pink, lemon, green, and blue this abstract painting with a floral motif is by Adam Cohen. Thickly applied expressive brushstrokes in a bright palette bring a palpable energy to this lively, joyful painting that resembles a floral tapestry. Cohen likes to cut into wet paint with a palette knife to create visible texture. Pink, lemon, green, and blue flower petals overlap one another in a luscious visual display. “… I like abstract painting. I can create accidents. And then I can edit in or out what I like. Use them as a springboard. A place to build the rest of the painting around. I create paintings that feel deeply personal to me. Somehow I always know when they are done.” Adam Cohen “A painting by Adam Cohen is like a sudden burst of light. Vision is dazzled by a surface alive with color, swarming with incident. As you approach the canvas, it feels as if it were coming forward to meet you, to immerse you in a field of visual energy.” Carter Ratcliff, Art Critic Adam Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. "Bright as the Blue Sky" Colorful Abstract Butterfly Painting Acrylic on Canvas
By Ash Almonte
Located in New York, NY
The Butterfly series for Ash began as a sentiment to her late Father. Butterflies began to appear in unexplainable ways after his passing, the artist later discovered that Butterflies represent spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope, and life - she goes on to say: "The butterfly series draws inspiration from Rivera's quote 'Butterflies can't see their wings. They can't see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can.'" After coming to the fruition that Butterflies pose as not only a symbol for beauty and rebirth, Almonte felt a feeling of deep comfort. Her passion for sharing this message of hope and renewal through her colorfully diverse canvases is achieved with resilience leaving her audience glimmering much like the inner voice and the spark of Joie de vivre that fuels her purpose in life to create. This piece is painted on thick gallery wrap canvas and is signed lower right and on verso, it comes with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 36 x 36 inches Inspired by vibrance and an optimistic outlook on life, Ash Almonte is recognized for her distinct abstract expressionistic style. She is best known for her series of Chandeliers, Butterflies, and Fashion from the Seventh Avenue Design District. Almonte's award-winning works can be found in private and permanent collections around the world. She is motivated by change, compassion for others, and miraculous phenomena that can impact others for good. Her flair and admiration for fashion and art have been a staple of her life since childhood. As a young girl, she would experiment using anything she could find to make art; from tearing apart bushel baskets at her father’s fruit stand, to tearing out old magazine clippings from her mother's magazine collection; anything and everything around her could potentially be used to create. She would continue to seek out opportunities throughout her young adult years, as her love for fashion grew, allowing her to collaborate with celebrity stylists creating looks for top billboard artists, as well as apparel worn at New York Fashion Week for designers Sherri Hill...
