About the Item
Rapid passages, drips and lines in pink, yellow, pastel green and dove gray are an extension of the artist's brush in this dynamic action painting by Adam Cohen.
New York based artist Adam Cohen creates work alive with the gestural influences of the abstract expressionists generation. His thick luscious, strokes are applied in layers to create striations of color. Often his bright colors break through the surface by cutting back into the paint while it is wet. Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for year. After many successful years as an illustrator he returned to his first love, painting. Adam Cohen lives and paints in the Catskills, NY. Cohen has exhibited extensively in the US, Europe and Asia, most recently in Amsterdam and Venice.

Adam Cohen
Adam Cohen is a New York based abstract artist whose work combines color and texture to endow the canvas with dream-like intensity; with lush, intricate layers of pigment, he creates paintings alive with gestural energy. Born in the United States in 1959, Cohen started painting at the age of 12, studying with Lilian Marzell, a respected teacher, artist and friend of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and other key figures of the Abstract Expressionist generation, who later became a huge influence on Cohen’s work. He went on to study at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, which included a year living and painting in Rome. Upon graduation, Cohen moved to New York City, where he studied at the School of Visual Arts while taking classes at the Art Students League and Parsons School of Design. Ahead of his time, he was one of the first artists to use computers and Photoshop in a creative context, which helped launch his career as a top illustrator, working for the likes of Disney, Coca Cola, Visa and the New York Times, amongst many others. After a 10-year break, Cohen returned to painting and moved from New York City to the Catskills, specializing in figurative work, which ultimatley led to his discovery and love of abstract painting. In 2012 Adam started applying pigment in wide, vigorous strokes, creating intricate colorful abstract tapestries with sharp contrasts of black and white. The textures of his paintings have changed over the years as black has almost disappeared. He now cuts the still-wet paint with a palette knife and other instruments to create intricate, almost vascular patterns. The results of these developments are paradoxical, for Cohen’s imagery is now more vibrantly physical than ever and, at the same time, more richly atmospheric. Now firmly established as an abstract painter, Cohen has exhibited extensively in the US, Europe and Asia, most recently at the Morren Gallery in Amsterdam and the Galleria Ravagnon in Venice.

- Proposition (Set of Four) - large, colourful, abstract, acrylic on canvasBy Milly RistvedtLocated in Bloomfield, ONMilly Ristvedt is making a bold proposition in this dramatic series of four large paintings designed to be displayed together. Each of the four canvases offers a stunning visual dialogue in blocks of colour—reds, purples, orange, greens, blues, black and white for contrast. Ristvedt is known as a master colourist who uses colour to express thought and emotion. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “They are meant to be ‘read’ together in the same viewing space. The conversations between them are intense.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...Category

- Phoenix - large, colorful, contemporary, abstract, diptych, acrylic on canvasBy Milly RistvedtLocated in Bloomfield, ONHorizontal bars of blue, maroon, cherry red, pink, lemon yellow, burnt orange and green communicate on a soaked sand-coloured ground in the two panels that form this 9-foot square acrylic diptych painting on canvas. The rhythm of the spaces between the short lengths of colour creates a dialogue of movement that leads the eye upwards through the large picture plane. About the inspiration for the work, the artist wrote: "This is one of the rare paintings that I saw clearly in a dream and painted almost exactly as I saw it. It relates back to the four-panel work, Lock-Up (1972), done a couple of months earlier, where I used the physical break between panels as an edge to anchor some colour bars. In Phoenix, some bars are anchored while others float within the larger ground colour." This painting was included in the exhibition catalogue Milly Ristvedt-Handerek: Paintings of a Decade (1979). Milly Ristvedt, RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. In Toronto, during the 1960s and 1970s, she was making and exhibiting large-scale paintings alongside a small but defined group of non-figurative painters who, like Ristvedt, had planted...Category

- Phenomena Greet by Day by Paul Jenkins - Abstract Expressionist paintingBy Paul JenkinsLocated in London, GBPhenomena Greet by Day by Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) Acrylic on canvas 146 x 114.3 cm (57 ½ x 45 inches) Signed lower right, Paul Jenkins Executed in 1994-1996 Provenance: Private collection, New York (acquired directly from the artist) Stern Pissarro Gallery, London Private collection, Netherlands Artist biography Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...Category
