Albert Hong Art

Albert Hong is a photographer and mixed media artist based in New York, NY. He began his career as an analyst on Wall Street after earning a BS from New York University’s Stern School of Business. Driven by his formative years spent on the harsh, hyper-connected trading floors of the financial sector, his work centers around the curious human need for escape and disconnection and the intimate role nature plays in its ultimate fulfillment. His work’s driving intention remains to rekindle our fascination for, appreciation of, and above all, a desire to conserve our only home.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: My first job out of school was on a trading floor playing a never ending game of probabilities. Days and nights filled with nodes, signals, decision trees, path-dependent outcomes and calculated probabilities in every flavor I could never have imagined. I spent eight years of my life in a two-block radius around 52nd and Park working on the kind of hopeless problems nobody in history had ever successfully solved; instead of helping me understand the world better like I thought I would in my naivete, my time there instead taught me the romance of the idea that some things are more beautiful if left never understood. That there was a peace in understanding there would be no answer. This series of surfer “movement studies” is a playful reminiscence of this part of my past, an ode to a formative period of my life overlaid on my San Diegan coastal upbringing. There are few things I have experienced in my life that are as pure and total in its disconnection with the world as sitting on a bar of foam on the great rippled plane of our oceans. It is my career’s antithesis. This humorous, almost interactive scribbling of pseudo-mathematical lines and nodes laying out all the nameless surfer’s possibilities represents this tension that continues to define me. Jim Krantz Epic Western III, 2019 40 x 68 inch chromogenic print Edition 5 of 5 Signed on signature label. Artist Biography - Krantz occupies a unique place in the history of contemporary art for his imagery blending western landscape photography with the figure of the cowboy as depicted and romanticized in American popular culture. The technical underpinning of his work was established when he studied with Ansel Adams and Paul Caponigro, but perhaps more importantly, Krantz’s work reflects a dictum that he learned from Adams: “Technical proficiency leads to artistic freedom.” His range and versatility are his forte, working with ease in demanding and ever-changing conditions. If Krantz’s work looks familiar, it is not surprising. Krantz, had been documenting the cinematic vistas of the American West for 20 years on commercial assignments and these much published images caught the eye of appropriation artist, Richard Prince, known for re-photographing advertisements and presenting the resulting images in a new “conceptual” context. Prince’s most famous series is his large scale reproductions of the cowboy images...
