André Brasilier Prints and Multiples

French, b. 1929
Born to two accomplished artists, Brasilier was naturally drawn to painting, and at the age of 20, he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. Brasilier has received several prestigious awards, including the 1952 Prix Florence Blumenthal and the 1953 Prix de Rome. He is also one of only two artists (the other being Pablo Picasso) honored with a retrospective at Saint Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum during their lifetime. He has exhibited works alongside legends such as Picasso, Braque, Chagall and Miro, and he is represented in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).

Signed, titled, and numbered, in pencil. The proposed edition was 100 although it is very unlikely that these were printed. This large and intensely urban lithograph, Family Flats, by Millard Sheets, portrays the Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles. Now drastically changed, it's still home to the Angels Flight funicular railway built in 1901. Sheets (1907-1989) was a painter, watercolorist, printmaker, mosaic artist, and teacher, who worked in Southern California. He attended the Chouinard Art institute and studied with F. Barbra Stresiand "Belle of 14th Street" 1973 CBS TV Special 20th Century Litho Signed and numbered 10/150 in pencil, lower margin. Etching, 13.5” x 9.75”. Framed 21.25” x 17.25”. Pulled in 1975. Belle of 14th Street After two successful television shows on CBS, Barbra's manager, Marty Erlichman told the press, “We don't intend to go to the well once too often. The next special will have other performers. However, Barbra will never become just another hostess for just another musical variety show. Whatever we decide to do in the future shows, she will dominate in a unique fashion.” Barbra’s third television special for CBS and her sponsor, Monsanto, was titled The Belle of 14th Street . In February 1966, shortly after finishing up Color Me Barbra , Streisand and husband Elliott Gould took a second honeymoon in Paris. The trip was financed by her television corporate sponsor, Chemstrand. Barbra told the press, “I’m here to purchase the wardrobe for my next TV special. Cost is no object because my sponsor is picking up the tab.” At that point the theme of her third TV show would be fashion, and Paris offered many couture choices. Barbra was seen at a Dior fashion show wearing not the designer’s clothes, but a jaguar suit and hat she had designed herself. In all, it is said Barbra chose nine Dior outfits at a cost of $150,000. However, Barbra Streisand's third television special for CBS was postponed. In March 1966, Barbra flew to London to appear at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Funny Girl . Shortly after beginning her run in London, Barbra announced her pregnancy. Not only did that cause her concert tour to be abbreviated, but Barbra’s television special was postponed as well. Barbra told the BBC in July 1966: “I also can’t do my third television show, which I was supposed to do here [London].” Returning to the States, Barbra performed four concert dates, and then retired to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and give birth to her son, Jason, in December 1966. CBS and Chemstrand wanted a new special by the end of 1967, therefore production on the show picked up momentum in March 1967. (Barbra was due in Hollywood in May to begin shooting the Funny Girl film.) The format and theme of the television show had changed, too. Instead of centering on fashion, Barbra’s next special would be situated in a 1900’s Vaudeville theater. “We were all determined that the show not be just a variety format,” director Joe Layton said. “We wanted something different. So we hit upon the idea of restaging a vaudeville performance. All the acts, songs, skits and specialties had to be derivative of the period between 1895-1912.” Barbra’s creative collaborators did meticulous research on Vaudeville — “We even called George Burns in Hollywood and Jack Pearl,” said Barbra’s manager, Marty Erlichman. Entitled The Belle of 14th Street , the new special would allow Barbra to play several different characters but not have to shoulder the burden of carrying another one-woman show—this time Streisand would be accompanied by guest stars: Broadway actor Jason Robards; Vaudeville veteran John Bubbles; and Lee Allen...

Marc Chagall, Couple Before the Tree, from Chagall Lithographer I, 1960

By Marc Chagall

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite lithograph by Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Couple devant l’arbre (Couple Before the Tree), from Chagall Lithographe I (Chagall Lithographer I), originates from the October 1960 issue published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte-Carlo, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1960. This visionary composition reflects Chagall’s mastery of the lithographic medium, embodying his poetic imagination through fluid line, expressive form, and a luminous sense of movement. The work conveys the artist’s unique ability to merge memory, symbolism, and emotion into a cohesive visual language, transforming even the simplest subject into a deeply evocative and dreamlike image. Infused with lyricism and spiritual resonance, the composition exemplifies Chagall’s enduring exploration of identity, mythology, and the transcendent power of art. The piece forms part of Chagall Lithographe I, a landmark publication that documents and celebrates the artist’s achievements in lithography, offering insight into one of the most significant aspects of his graphic oeuvre. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.625 inches (31.75 x 24.45 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the greatest modern masters of the 20th century. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Chagall Lithographe I (Chagall Lithographer I), published by Andre Sauret, Editeur, Monte-Carlo, 1960 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This work, which was designed and compiled by Fernand Mourlot and Andre Sauret, was finished in October 1960. The reproductions were printed on the presses of Draeger Freres, and the original lithographs on the presses of Mourlot Freres. The Imprimerie Nationale de France is responsible for the typography. Of this work it was shot, apart, CL examples on Grand Velin d'Arches, numbered to the press from I to CL, signed by the artist and the publisher, including, in addition, two original lithographs specially made for this separate draw. About the Publication: Chagall Lithographe I (Chagall Lithographer I), published in October 1960 by Andre Sauret in Monte-Carlo and printed by Mourlot Freres, represents a foundational survey of Marc Chagall’s lithographic production. Conceived in close collaboration with master printer Fernand Mourlot, the publication serves as both a catalogue and a celebration of the artist’s exploration of lithography from the late 1940s through the 1950s. It documents the technical and artistic evolution of Chagall’s printmaking, highlighting the innovative approaches he developed in partnership with the Mourlot atelier, whose expertise allowed for the translation of his painterly vision into the lithographic medium with extraordinary fidelity. The publication includes numerous reproductions alongside original lithographs, offering a comprehensive overview of themes central to Chagall’s work, including biblical narratives, folklore, and personal symbolism. Widely regarded as an essential reference in the study of Chagall’s graphic oeuvre, Chagall Lithographe I stands as a testament to the enduring collaboration between artist and printer, and to the importance of lithography within the broader trajectory of 20th century modern art. About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary imagination, radiant color, and deeply poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved and influential artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the imagery of his Jewish heritage and the memories of his childhood in Vitebsk, Chagall’s art wove together themes of faith, love, folklore, and fantasy with a dreamlike modern sensibility. His unique style—merging elements of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism—defied categorization, transforming ordinary scenes into lyrical meditations on memory and emotion. Influenced by Russian icon painting, medieval religious art, and the modern innovations of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque, Chagall developed a profoundly personal visual language filled with floating figures, vibrant animals, musicians, and lovers that symbolized the transcendent power of imagination and love. During his early years in Paris, he became an integral part of the Ecole de Paris circle, forming friendships with Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger, and Sonia Delaunay, and his creative spirit resonated with that of his peers and successors—Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like Chagall, sought to push the boundaries of perception, emotion, and form. Over a prolific career that spanned painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, and stage design, Chagall brought an unparalleled poetic sensibility to modern art, infusing even the most abstract subjects with human warmth and spiritual depth. His works are held in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to inspire generations of artists and collectors. The highest price ever paid for a Marc Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD, achieved in 2017 at Sotheby’s New York for Les Amoureux (1928). Marc Chagall Couple...
