Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini Art
Attilio Zuccagni-Orlandini was a famous Italian cartographer and geographer active in Tuscany since the early 19th century. Graduated in medicine at the University of Pisa, and after making long trips, in Italy and abroad, he returned to Florence to manage a private institute and devote himself to the world of education. However, having become head of the statistical section of the Ministry of Finance and taking up the passion that emerged during his youthful journeys, which had a significant influence on his work, he soon devoted himself to the study of cartography and geography. In this context, he began his most famous and complex works, such as the monumental compilations relating to the physical-historical-statistical chorography of Italy, which affected the period from 1833–45, and to the statistical research of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (7 volumes, in two different series), from 1848–56. From 1861, he obtained the chair of statistics at the Institute of Practical Higher Studies and Specialization in Florence, a chair he held until 1872, the year of his death. On February 19, 1835, he became a member of the Turin Academy of Sciences.
