Many in the art world today dismiss illustrators as being commercial simply because their work was done on assignment for a client, rather than for themselves. Sadly, these art world people have limited imagination and a restricted sense of curiosity. Rembrandt and Leonardo were commercial artists. This beautiful work by the great American Illustrator Bob Peak has a sister work in the collection of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angles. We feel that our work has a little more detail, complexity and dimension to it as the beautiful female figure seems to be floating in an endless sky of dreamy colors. Portrait of beautiful woman, Large powerfully sensual deco-esque work by America's Master of the Movie Poster. Bob Peak. Bob Peak, in my opinion, was the Norman Rockwell of post-war American Illustration, this is one of the works that paved the way for a new way of seeing. It's more fine art than commercial art. For Apocalypse Now, in 1979, Francis Ford Coppola could have hired any artist in the world to create the movie poster and image for his film. He hired Bob Peak. Some of the movie posters Peak has worked on. West Side Story, Rollerball, Star Trek, Superman, Excalibur, Apocalypse Now, The Spy Who Loved Me. My Fair Lady, Camelot and Enter the Dragon. Additionally, Peak illustrated 45 covers of Time Magazine and many covers for Sports Illustrated, TV Guide. Signed lower center Private Collection Georges Delerue...

Football players cloaked in oversized Browns jackets are seen from behind running off the field. Always the graphic innovator, legendary illustrator Bob Peak creates a radical composition by leaving the bottom two-thirds of the picture plane empty of detail. To convey a sense of motion, Peak uses broad strokes of paint similar to the action painters Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, who were the dominant force in the fine art world in the 1960s. Clearly, one can see a cross-over influence from Fine Art to commercial illustration as Peak strikes a balance between abstract versus figurative art. This work was done on an assignment for Sports Illustrated...

Shar-I-Tar-Ish, A Pawnee Chief: Original Hand-colored McKenney & Hall Lithograph

By McKenney & Hall

Located in Alamo, CA

This is an original 19th century 1st edition octavo hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled " Shar-I-Tar-Ish, A Pawnee Chief", lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by Rice and Hart in Philadelphia in 1848. Shar-I-Tar-Ish's portrait has a reddish hue from the feathers in his headdress and amulet chain, with a brownish taupe color of the upper trim of his costume. He is wearing his presidential peace medal. He has a very serious and thoughtful expression. This original McKenney and Hall hand-colored lithograph is printed on a sheet measuring 10.38" high and 7" wide. There are faint smudges in the margins. The print is otherwise in very good condition. The original descriptive text pages, 33-34, from McKenney and Hall's 19th century publication are included. A famous Pawnee chief, Shar-I-Tar-Ish led his people during the early part of the 19th century. He was descended from a line of chiefs. Decades ahead of his time, legendary artist/ illustrator Bob Peak executes a football illustration that looks as much like a color field painting done by French post-impressionist painter Vuillard. Peak demonstrates his use of extreme composition by leaving the bottom 3/4 of the painting to the football field and only a thin part of the top to the football players. In 1964, this was a breakthrough and radical style. Signed lower right. Done on assignment for Sports Illustrated...

By Bob Peak

Located in Miami, FL

Revolutionary artist and illustrator Bob Peak creates a stunning work of golf-themed art that straddles representation and abstraction. Clearly, Peak drew inspiration from the color-field movement being featured in galleries in downtown Manhattan. Their work was about the interaction of blocks of color. Here, Peak shows his distinctive hybrid style of narrative art expressed in large swatches of color but painted with expressive brushwork with thick accumulation of paint in some places. Notice how almost all of the figures are so well delineated with a deep knowledge of academic painting and rigorous attention to body pose and anatomy. Peak has rendered almost every figure in this work of which the total number of rendered figures exceeds 200. The work was most likely done for an assignment for Sports Illustrated Magazine...
