Claude Vénard Art

French, 1913-1999

Claude Vénard has a distinct style — it’s post-Cubist in its composition and he progressively accentuated the chromaticism of his palette up to reaching the crudest of colors, which he used in very thick forms and sometimes applied with a pallet knife.

Vénard was born in France in 1913 and, dedicating himself fully to making paintings at the age of 17, he studied at the École des Arts Appliqués for six years, having fled the Académie des Beaux-Arts after just 48 hours. In 1938 he signed the Rupture manifesto and participated in the first exhibition of the influential group Forces Nouvelles, alongside Francis Gruber and Pierre Tal-Coat at the Galerie Billiet-Vorms. A close affinity subsequently developed among these painters and together they were instrumental in forging the aesthetic of the immediate postwar period of the Ecole de Paris.

Vénard quickly became known for his rich impasto and varying texture. He received critical acclaim and was personally championed by Andre Salmon and Waldemar George, who described his painting as “Apocalyptic art! Beings and everyday things suddenly regain their meaning. Emotional values are once more felt.”

Vénard’s distinct and alluring compositions developed through a post-Cubist system that oscillates between abstraction and naturalism. He opens up perspectives projecting spatial vistas into every part of the canvas, in accordance with an emotional rather than a physical order. Familiar objects arise in the midst of a network of striations and hatching. Colors grow more intense in certain zones to stress the solidity of the composition; in other zones the light is more tenuous and diaphanous, as if to indicate space of different emotional intensity.

Nature morte en rouge et noir (Still-life in Red and Black), 1953
By Claude Venard
Located in Mc Lean, VA
Claude Vénard was born in Paris in 1913 to an established, middle-class family from Bourgogne. Although he was a businessman, his father accepted and supported his devotion to the arts. The blossoming artist was accepted at the prestigious École des Beaux-arts but quickly rejected the formality of traditional academic art training. Instead, Vénard began attending night courses at the École de Arts Appliqués at age seventeen to supplement his independent education. After six years of dedicated study the painter was forced, due to economic difficulties, to withdraw from the school and seek employment. Vénard became a restoration specialist...

'le Aeroship' Paris Skyline painting, biplane, Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur, Grey
By Claude Venard
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'le Aeroship' by Claude Venard is a beautiful chromatic, black, white, grey and blue painting of the Paris Skyline. Featuring the Sacre Coeur, Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, Notre Dame and of course the incredible powerful Biplane. If you are looking for a powerful demanding work then thes pice is most definitely that. Claude Venard is known for his vibrant, semi-abstract works that often-explored structure and colour, aviation was a fascination for Venard. Although, if we imagine ‘Le Aeroship’ within his creative world, it might symbolise freedom, innovation, and the power of human imagination. Venard’s bold use of geometry and texture in this piece could easily translate into a fantastical vision of air travel, with an aeroship designed not for practicality but as a work of art. Using his signature style and cubist influences, Venard used mechanics to create an aesthetic celebration of line, and form. Although he loved to use bright and bold colours, Venard also enjoyed painting with a very muted pallet, often using dark tones to capture a mood or moment in time. This is presented clearly in this monotone city scape. The whimsical biplane which was fascinating for Venard. He had a large collection of tin plate toys...

"Ethnographic Still Life, " Edith Kramer, African Mask and Shofar, Art Therapy
By Edith Kramer
Located in New York, NY
Edith Kramer (1916 - 2014) Still Life with Mask, n.d. Oil on canvas 26 x 20 inches Signed and titled on the stretcher Provenance: Estate of the artist Kramer was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary in 1916. At age 13 Kramer began art lessons with Friedl Dicker. Dicker was graduate of the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany and was an artist and art teacher of note. Kramer studied drawing, sculpture and painting, and was influenced by the method for teaching art developed by Bauhaus artist Johannes Itten. It was in 1934 after Kramer graduated from Realgymnasium that she, then 18, followed Dicker to Prague to continue to study under her. During this time in Prague, Kramer witnessed the therapeutic impact of art when she assisted Dicker in teaching art to the children of political refugees. With the threat of Nazi invasion looming, Kramer took refuge in America in 1938. In New York City, she worked for three years teaching sculpture at a progressive school called the Little Red School House. During World War II Kramer worked as a machinist at a tool and die shop in the Soho district of New York City. She stayed after her shift to draw the other workers in their industrial setting. These works were rendered in the social realist style. In 1947 Kramer visited some of the earliest known artwork, in the caves at Lascaux. Kramer spoke of these cave paintings as an example of the universal language of art. At the age of 33 she returned to New York City, with hopes of making a living as an artist. Still in her 33rd year, Kramer was offered a job at Wiltwyck School for Boys, a school and residential treatment facility for children with behavioral and emotional needs. This job was arranged for her by psychoanalyst and board member at Wiltwyck, Dr. Viola Bernard. Dr. Bernard gave Kramer the title, "Art Therapist," noting that few teachers were willing to work with such challenging students. It was here that Kramer worked with disturbed boys, ages 8 through 13, for the following seven years. Raised in a family which was interested in psychoanalytic theory, Kramer herself became a follower of Sigmund Freud. Kramer especially believed in the concept of sublimation. Freudian theory describes sublimation as a process in which primitive urges coming from the id are transformed into socially productive activities that lead to gratification of the original urge. Kramer's training was in art, art education and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. Kramer believed sublimation to be one of the most vital goals of art therapy...
