Pierre Tal-Coat Art

French, 1905-1985
Pierre Tal-Coat (1905–1985) was a French artist considered to be one of the founders of Tachisme, a French style of abstract painting popular in the 1940s and 1950s often considered to be the European equivalent to abstract expressionism. It was part of a larger postwar movement known as Art Informel, which abandoned geometric abstraction in favor of a more intuitive form of expression, similar to action painting. He was friends with such notables as Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Giacometti, Balthus and Artaud. In 1963 he collaborated alongside Joan Miro and Ubac in the creation of the Maeght foundation.

Yarrell's Wood-star Hummingbirds: A 19th Century Hand-Colored Gould Lithograph
By John Gould and Henry Constantine Richter
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a hand-colored folio sized lithograph entitled "Calothorax Yarrelli", Yarrell's Wood-star Hummingbirds by John Gould, published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London in 1850. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts three green, white, grey, and a little blue colored hummingbirds amid green cactus plants with white and pink colored flowers. The hummingbirds are augmented by gum-arabic paint, which gives them an iridescent appearance in areas in which it is used. This beautiful Gould hand-colored hummingbird lithograph is in excellent condition. The original descriptive text page from Gould's 19th century publication is included. There are several other unframed Gould hummingbird...

David Roberts' 19th Century Duo-tone Lithograph: Colossus of the Temple of Wady
By David Roberts
Located in Alamo, CA
"Colossus in Front of the Temple of Wady Saboua, Nubia" is a 19th century half-folio sized duo-tone lithograph from the "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia" volume of David Roberts’ large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1843. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered by many to be the most beautiful lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This half page lithograph depicts two colossal statues that stood in front of Temple of Wady in Nubia, each measuring 14 feet high and 5 feet across at the shoulders. Both figures hold a long staff with a symbolic rams head and disc on top. The second colossus lies on the ground. Three guards are in conversation with two other individuals at the base of the upright statue. Nubia is the area between Aswan in southern Egypt and Khartoum in central Sudan. It was the site of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa...
